Abstract
In order to clear jammed paper from a paper handling device, one of the guide members 8 defining a paper transport path can be pivoted away from the transport path to provide an access opening, and the paper feed rollers 1, 2 can be manually rotated to transport the jammed paper to the access opening for easy removal. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Jam clearing device
The present invention relates to a device for clearing paper jammed in a paper transport path of, for example, a copying machine. Generally, paper jammed in a paper path, hereinafter "a jam", is clearable by an operator by hand or awing tool. Though a jam in a straight paper transport path is easily clearable, a jam in a curved paper transport path is not easily clearable and the paper frequently is damaged. In the event of jam-clearance in an original document transport path in a copying machine, paper damage is a particularly important problem.
it is therefoe an object of the present invention to provide a device for clearing a jam whereby the risk of damaging or mutilating the jammed paper in the paper transporting path of the copying machine is minimized.
Briefly, this is achieved according to the present invention by movably, preferably pivotally, supporting one of the guide members which defines a paper transport path and moving that guide member in order to provide an access opening in the paper transport path when a jam occurs. A manual operating knob or other means is coupled to the transport mechanism to permit the jammed paper to be manually advanced along the paper transport path, preferably in either direction to said access opening for easy removal.
One example of the invention will now be described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a part of document handler of a copying machine;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line ll-ll in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a front view of a handle illustrated in
Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates only two of a plurality of feed rollers for the purpose of simplifying the description and also shows an exposing platen together with other components. At both sides of the two feed rollers 1, 2, are disposed pairs of idle rollers 3,4 and 5, 6 and an original 7 (to be copied) is fed between the feed rollers 1, 2 and the idle rollers 3, 4, 5, 6. Between the feed rollers 1,2 are disposed paper guide plates 8, 9. The original 7 fed from the direction of arrow a passes between feed roller 1 and idle roller 4 and is fed between the paper guide plates 8, 9 to the feed roller 2. Thereafter it passes between a feed roller 2 and idle roller 6, and then passes between the outer periphery of the feed roller 2 and the inner periphery of a guide 10, whereby the feed direction of the original 7 reverses.
The original 7 is then fed from the nip between the feed roller 2 and the idle roller 5 to the path between the paper guide plates 11, 12 and is fed to the nip between the feed roller 1 and the idle roller 3.
Thereafter, the original 7 is fed from the above nip to another feed roller (not illustrated) or fed to the nip between the feed roller 1 and the idle roller 4 through a guide 13.
Referring to Figure 2 which is a plan view of Figure 1, a plurality of feed rollers 1 are disposed on a common rotary shaft 14. A driving gear 15 is provided on the rotary shaft 14 and is also coupled to a driving source such as a motor (not illustrated). A plurality of feed rollers 2 are disposed on a further common rotary shaft 16 on which a driving gear 17 is provided. The gears 15, 17 are connected with each other by a centre gear 18. When the motor is energised, this gear connection transmits drive to the feed roller 2, that is, the motor driving energy rotates the driving gear 15 and the feed roller 1 in the direction of the arrow and the energy is also transmitted to the gear 17 through the centre gear 18, whereby the feed roller 2 also rotates in the same direction at the same speed as the feed roller 1.
Additionally, a handle 19 disposed on the rotary shaft 14 enables the rotary shaft 14 to be manually rotated in the direction of arrow b.
The following is a description of a jam-clearance process in the present apparatus. As illustrated in the two broken lines of Figure 1, the guide plate 8 together with the idle rollers 4, 6 can be moved pivotally around an axis A thus opening the paper transporting path. After opening the paper transport path the feed rollers 1 are rotated by the handle 19 in the feed direction or in the reverse direction, whereby the jammed paper is fed to the opened paper transporting path and the jam is cleared. Furthermore, since all feed rollers are linked, a jammed paper in any roller is fed by operation of one handle to the position where the jam is easily clearable.
Though the above description is directed to an example of the jam clearing device in a document handler, the present invention can also be used in jam clearing of copy paper.
As described above, the present invention can clear jammed paper in a paper transporting path by an easy operation without damaging or mutilating the jammed paper.
