Abstract
A Hookes universal joint, in which assembly and dismantling is facilitated by providing each bore 3 in the yoke arms of the joint with a portion 8 in which the bearing cup 4 is a press fit and a portion 9 of increased diameter. The press fit portion extends only over the part of the bearing cup corresponding to the length of the needle roller bearings within the bearing cup, and the increased diameter portion extends radially inwardly beyond an annular groove in which a retaining ring 5 is received. This enables the bearing cup to be pressed out of the press fit part of the bore by radial movement of the cross member of the joint. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Hookes universal joint
This invention relates to a Hookes universal joint, comprising two yokes each having spaced arms, and a cross member having journals received in bearing cups containing needle roller bearings, the bearing cups being a press fit in respective portions of bores in said yoke arms and retained therein by retaining rings engaging annular grooves in the respective yoke arm bores.
Such a universal joint will hereafter be referred to as a Hookes universal joint of the kind specified.
To permit assembly of a universal joint of the kind specified it has been proposed, in French patent specification 1497512, that each of the bores in the yoke arms should be provided, radially outwardly of the groove for the retaining ring having regard to the axis of rotation of the joint as a whole, with a portion of increased diameter.
Thus in assembly of the joint the bearing cup can be introduced into the bore and does not have to be forced in until it reaches the press fit portion of the bore. The bearing cup itself has, at its radially outermost end, a portion of reduced external diameter which enables the bush to be gripped during assembly or dismantling without damaging the external surface of the bush which is required to have the press fit in the yoke arm bore. The joint can be dismantled by radially displacing the closs member to push the bearing cup out of the yoke arm bore sufficiently far for the reduced diameter portion of the bearing cup to be gripped.
However, this construction has a disadvantage in that the area of the bush which can be of a smaller diameter is limited, so that there are difficulties in holding the bush. Further, it is not possible to arrange for a bush to be pressed completely out of the press fit portion of its bore in the yoke arm merely by movement of the cross member, and to achieve this would entail an undesirably iarge rotational diameter of the universal joint as a whole. During assembly, the journal of the cross member cannot be moved far enough into the yoke arm bore for the bearing cup to engage sufficiently to ensure that the needle rollers therein cannot tilt before it reaches the press fit area of the bore, so that assembly of the joint is rendered difficult in addition to dismantling thereof.These difficulties are even more significant if a universal joint has to be placed in situ in a drive line of a vehicle or machine.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a universal joint in which these disadvantages are overcome or reduced.
According to the invention, we provide a
Hookes universal joint of the kind specified wherein each of the bearing cups is engaged as a press fit by the wall of the bore in the yoke arm substantially only in a region extending over the needle rollers within the bearing cup, and an increased diameter portion of said bore extends radially inwardly beyond said retaining ring groove, so that the bearing cup can be removed from its press fit engagement with the yoke arm by radial displacement of the cross member.
Dismantling of a universal joint is facilitated by the provision, according to the invention, of the relatively shorter press fit portion of the bore in the yoke arm and longer portion thereof of increased diameter, and by the design of the cross member of the joint in such a way that it can be moved into the bore in the yoke by a distance at least as great as the radial extent of the press fit portion.
Assembly is also facilitated, since the cross member can be moved into the bore far enough for the bearing cup with its needle rollers to engage the journal of the cross member before reaching the press fit portion. Tilting of the needles within the bearing cup is thus avoided.
The bearing cups can be removed without having to grip them with tools which could damage the bearing cups. Thus, easy assembly and dismantling of the universal joint can be achieved, even if the joint is in situ.
Each bearing cup may be provided, at its end which is radially innermost when installed, with a region of decreased diameter. By such provision, a greater length is available for the press fit portion of the bore in each yoke arm, without detracting from the advantages of the invention.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section of an assembled universal joint according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a section through one yoke arm and associated components of the universal joint, in the installed state;
Figure 3 is a section corresponding to Figure 2, during dismantling of the universal joint.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, this shows a universal joint comprising two joint yokes 1, 1', connected to each other by way of a cross member 2. Each journal of the cross member 2 is received, with the intermediary of needle roller bearings, in a bearing cup 4 which is received in a bore 3 in the respective arm 6 of the yoke, and retained therein by a retaining ring 5.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the bore 3 in the yoke arm 6 comprises a portion 8 in which the bearing cup 4 is a press fit, and a portion 9 which is of increased diameter relative to the portion 8. The portion 9 extends radially inwardly, having regard to the axis of rotation of the joint as a whole when in use, beyond the annular groove which receives the retaining ring 5. The press fit portion 8 of the bore in the yoke arm engages the external surface of the bearing cup when installed only in a region corresponding to the length of the needle rollers 10 within the bearing cup, and this is adequate support for the bearing cup.
In the illustrated embodiment, the bearing cup has at its radially innermost end a portion 11 whose external diameter is reduced.
Dismantling of the universal joint is shown in
Figure 3. The arrangement is such that by radially displacing the cross member, the bearing cup can be released from the portion of the bore in the yoke arm in which it is a press fit. The reduced diameter portion 11 at the innermost end of the bearing cup permits an increase in the length of the press fit portion 8 of the bore, without increasing the movement of the bearing cup required for it to be released from the press fit.
As will be seen from Figure 3, installation of the bearing cup is also facilitated, since it can be fitted onto the journal 7 of the cross member in such a way that the needle rollers 10 are prevented from tilting as the bearing cup is pressed or hammered into position.
