Abstract
A bag having good heat insulative properties and affording protection to articles carried therein is formed of a sheet material having first and second plies (1, 2) secured together in face to face relationship. The first ply (1) is formed of a flexible synthetic plastics material e.g. polyethylene or p.v.c. and the second ply (2) is formed of a flexible foamed synthetic plastics material e.g. polystyrene or polyolefin. The bag is formed as a consequence of the sheet material being folded in a manner such that regions of the first ply are brought into face to face relationship followed by the securing together of said regions. A third ply may be present. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to bags
This invention relates to bags and is concerned with bags formed of synthetic plastics materials.
Bags formed of polyethylene and similar thermoplastic plastics materials have been known for many years. Although such bags are waterproof and have other useful characteristics, they do suffer from the disadvantage that they do not afford protection to articles carried therein. Further, in view of the very thin film materials from which these bags are made, they do not have good heat insulative properties.
It is an object of the present invention to provide bags which do not suffer from these disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a bag formed of a sheet material having first and second plies secured together in face to face relationship wherein the first ply is formed of a flexible synthetic plastics material, the second ply is formed of a flexible foamed synthetic plastics material, and the bag is formed as a consequence of the sheet material being folded in a manner such that regions of the first ply are brought into face to face relationship followed by the securing together of said regions.
The material from which the first ply is made may be any suitable film forming material and is preferably, but not necessarily, heat sealable. Examples of suitable materials for the first ply are polyethylene and other polyolefins, and polyvinyl chloride. The second ply may be formed of any suitable material such as foamed polystyrene or foamed polyolefin.
The two plies of the sheet material may be secured together in any suitable manner and ordinarily they will be laminated together using a suitable adhesive.
Depending upon the nature of the material from which it is made, it may be necessary to treat the surface of the first ply in a conventional manner in order to make it more receptive to the adhesive being used.
In the case where the folding operation used to produce the bag is such that regions of the second ply are also brought into face to face contact, these regions also may be secured together using, for example, a suitable adhesive. If desired, the sheet material from which the bag is made may include a third ply on the opposite surface of the second ply to the first, the third ply preferably also being formed from flexible synthetic plastic material. In this case, the materials of the first and third ply may be the same or different and the foamed material of the second ply will be sandwiched between the first and third plies. The material ofthethird ply may optionally be paper.
The relative thicknesses of the plies of the sheet material may be selected in dependence upon the
nature to which the bag is to be put. In this regard, the bag may be used for accommodating articles of a
delicate or fragile nature such as small electrical
components, glassware etc in which case the foamed second ply will give valuable protection to the articles. Alternatively, the bag may be used as a carrier bag having valuable heat insulative properties. In this case, the bag is useful for accommodating hot food in a manner such that the heat will be retained for a period during transit or for carrying cold food where it is desired that any increase in temperature of the food during transit should be minimised.
The bag may be formed from sheet material in any desired manner provided that it is formed by securing together adjacent regions of the first ply. Thus, for example, the bag may have a bottom seal or side seals as the case may be.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show howthe same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure lisa perspective view of a bag in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of sheet material at an intermediate stage in the manufacture of the bag of
Figure 1,and
Figure 3 is a section along lihe Ill-Ill of Figure 2.
Referring to the Figures, the sheet material from which the bag is made is formed of a first ply 1 and a second ply 2. The first ply 1 is formed of polyethylene film (either high or low density polyethylene is suitable) and the material of the second ply is foamed polystyrene. The sheet material is manufactured by suitably treating discrete areas 3 of a length of polyethylene film 1 so that these areas 3 are receptive to adhesive. Thereafter, sheets 2 of foamed polystyrene are then laminated to these treated areas 3 using pressure and an appropriate adhesive. Thereafter, the sheet material is folded along dotted line 4 so that untreated regions of the polyethylene film 1 come into face to face contact and similarly regions of the foamed polystyrene also come into face to face contact. If desired, a suitable adhesive may be applied to the marginal areas of the sheets 2 of foamed polystyrene so that these marginal areas can be adhered together. In any event, the opposing untreated surfaces of the polyethylene film 1 are heat sealed together to form a plurality of bags joined together and these are then separated in conventional manner to form a plurality of seperate bags as shown in Figure 3 each having side seals.
1. A bag formed of a sheet material having first and second plies secured together in face to face relationship wherein the first ply is formed of a flexible synthetic plastics material, the second ply is formed of a flexible foamed synthetic plastics mater
ial, and the bag is formed as a consequence of the
sheet material being folded in a manner such that
regions of the first ply are brought into face to face
relationship followed by the securing together of said regions.
2. A bag as claimed in claim 1 wherein the mater
ial from which the first ply is made is heat sealable.
3. A bag as claimed in claim 2 wherein the heat
sealable material is a polyolefin.
4. A bag as claimed in claim 3 wherein the heat
sealable material is polyethylene.
5. A bag as claimed in claim 1 wherein the mater
ial from which the first ply is made is polyvinyl
chloride.
