Abstract

A hanger for removably attaching to walls, doors etc. plates, mirrors, pictures, maps, charts and the like comprising a back member 10 having an aperture 18 to enable the member to be hung from a hook or nail and at least one area of pressure sensitive adhesive, e.g. a foam pad 12 with pressure sensitive material on both faces, to stick the back member to the article to be hung. The aperture may be provided on a cranked limb 16, 20 extending from the back member, which is preferably of plastics. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hanger The present invention relates to hangers, particularly but not exclusively hangers for removably attaching to walls, doors, and the like, plates, mirrors, pictures, maps, charts etc.

In the past numerous methods of hanging products of the type described in the preceding paragraph have been employed but all have suffered from certain drawbacks. For example pictures have been hung with wires or strings attached by nails or hooks to the back of the picture. These nails have often been difficult to insert, can cause the frame to split and, in certain instances mark the wall. Plates have been hung on walls utilising plate holders involving relatively complicated springs and clips and apart from suffering from most of the disadvantages experienced by picture frame hanging arrangements they are further disadvantageous in that different-sized hangers are required for different sized plates.Maps and charts have often been attached to the walls simply by the use of adhesive tape, this resulting in damage to the wall, map or chart when it has to be subsequently removed from the wall.

It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate these disadvantages.

According to the present invention we provide a hanger comprising a backing member having means therein for accommodating a fixing nail, hook or other projection, and at least one pressure sensitive adhesive area thereon.

Preferably the means for accommodating the fixing nail, hook or other projection is an aperture in the backing member. The backing member may be manufactured from board, metal, plastics material, cloth, leather or the like depending upon the use to which it is to be put and the adhesive area is preferably provided by a pad of foam sheet material with a pressure sensitive adhesive coating on each side thereof. Preferably at least the side of the foam sheet material remote from the backing member has a protective tear-off covering.

The backing member may be shaped to suit the object which it is to support, for example it may be relatively horizontally elongate if it is to support a picture or circular if it is to support a plate or plaque.

In one embodiment, especially though not exclusively for use in hanging plates, the backing member is laminar and provided with a limb, the limb having therein said means for accommodating a fixing nail, hook or other projection and being angled so that the plane of the limb in the region of said means is spaced from the plane of the laminar backing member.

Preferably the hanger is made principally from plastics material.

Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figs. 1 to 5 show hangers of various shapes, Fig. 6 is an underneath plan view of a further hanger according to the invention, Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view on line V-V of Fig. 5 showing also in cross section, part of a plate attached thereto, and Fig. 8 is a side elevational view of the hanger shown in Fig. 5.

The hangers shown in Figs. 1 to 5 comprise a backing member 1 of plastics having a plurality of pads 2 thereon. The pads are provided by foam tape coated on each side with a pressure sensitive adhesive layer, one layer adhering to the backing member 1 , the other being temporarily covered with a protective sheet.

The shape of the backing member 1 is determined by the use to which the hanger is put.

In Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings the circular backing members are designed for use with plates, saucers, plaques and the like whilst the others are designed for use with picture frames, charts, maps etc.

In operation a suitably shaped backing member is selected and the protective coatings are removed from the adhesive pads 2. The backing member is then removably fixed to the object to be hung on the wall and it is a simple matter to hang the object on the wall simply by passing a nail or the like fixed to the wall through the aperture 3 in the backing member.

It will be realised that when it is desired to remove the object from the wall it is a very simple matter and the wall remains undamaged.

Furthermore, there is no damage to the object if it is made from a material from which the adhesive pads can readily be removed, for example, porcelain, plastics, wood, metal.

The hanger shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 comprises a circular laminar portion 10 to which is attached a pad 12 of pressure sensitive adhesive material whose face is covered, until required, by release paper (not shown). A limb 1 6 extends generally radially from the laminar portion 10 the limb, being provided with an aperture 1 8 by means of which the hanger and an article attached to it may be hung from a nail, picture hook or the like. It will be noted that the limb 1 6 has a cranked portion 20 so that when, for example, the hanger is fixed to a plate 22 (see Fig. 7) having a base rim, the rim does not prevent the adhesive pad 12 from properly contacting the back of the plate. Webs 24 are provided for strength. The whole hanger with the exception of the adhesive pad 12 is made from plastics material.

Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Two or more apertures may be provided and the hanging means could be a recess in the rear of the backing member. Additionally the backing member can be manufactured from any suitable material apart from the plastics described above e.g. rigid card, metal, wood, leather, fabric.

Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.

Claims (11)

1. A hanger comprising a backing member having means therein for accommodating a fixing nail, hook or other projection, and at least one pressure sensitive adhesive area thereon.

2. A hanger as claimed in claim 1 in which the means for accommodating the fixing nail, hook or other projection is an aperture in the backing member.

3. A hanger as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the backing member is laminar and is provided with a limb, the limb having therein said means for accommodating a fixing nail, hook or other projection and being angled so that the plane of the limb in the region of said means is spaced from the plane of the laminar backing member.

4. A hanger as claimed in any preceding claim in which the backing member is made from plastics material.

5. A hanger as claimed in any preceding claim in which the backing member is made from board.

6. A hanger as claimed in any preceding claim in which the backing member is made from metal.

7. A hanger as claimed in any preceding claim in which the backing member is made from cloth.

8. A hanger as claimed in any preceding claim in which the backing member is made from leather.

9. A hanger as claimed in any preceding claim in which the adhesive area is provided by a pad of foam sheet material with pressure sensitive material on each side thereof.

1 0. A hanger as claimed in claim 9 in which the side of the foam sheet material remote from the backing member has a protective tear-off covering over the adhesive on that side.

11. A hanger substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of Figs. 1 to 4.
