Abstract
Apparatus for muscular stimulation or massage of a patient is in the form of a chamber (10) with a window (11) covered by a supported flexible membrane (12) against the outside of which a part of the patient's body, clothed or undressed, is located. Water from a jet (13) is caused to break and impinge on the inside of the diaphragm to provide the stimulation or massage and then drain to a sump (17) where a pump (14) sends the water back to the jet (13). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for treating the living body
This invention relates to apparatus for treating the living body. It is primarily concerned with apparatus for providing a form of muscular stimulation or massage.
Apparatus according to the invention is advantageous over any comparable known apparatus in that it is basically simple and inexpensive to operate and in that it can be used to apply massage to covered areas of the human body and therefore does not essentially require undressing for treatment.
Apparatus according to the invention comprises a supported flexible membrane against which a part of a living body can be located and means for directing water to impinge upon the membrane.
In the use of such apparatus, a person requiring treatment locates a part of his body against the membrane whilst water is impinging on the membrane.
Preferably the apparatus is made in a cabinet form and may then typically comprise a chamber with an aperture and the membrane held across the aperture. A water jet nozzle is then provided to direct water on to the membrane. The water then drains from the membrane, is collected, and pumped back to the nozzle.
One form of apparatus according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic sectional elevation.
A chamber 10 is provided having a window 11 covered buy a rubber sheet membrane 12. Inside the chamber there is a water jet nozzle 13 and a water pump 14. Aflexible hose (shown broken) connected between the pump and nozzle. The chamber 10 has an inclined floor 16 and a sump 13. The chamber is supported on feet 18. A stool 19 is shown with a patient 20 on the stool and in contact with the membrane in order to receive back treatment by a jet of water from the nozzle 13 impacting the membrane 12 and transmitting stimulation to the back of the patient 20. The nozzle 13 is carried on a rocker arm 21 so that the nozzle can be oscillated to scan a jet of water over the back of the patient. Other mechanical devices can be used to provide for movement and adjustment of the nozzle. It is not essential that it should always move in use.
It appears to be advantageous that the nozzle 13 should be set back from the membrane by an amount that allows a degree of break-up of the jet issuing from the nozzle. Various control elements can be included in the apparatus described. For example, in addition to the movability of the nozzle, water pressure to the nozzle can be controlled, so can flow rate in the hose 15 and nozzle aperture and nozzle style. The water jet can be pulsed. Control could be left in the hands of the patient or with an operator, possibly then with overall control by the patient if the patient is held. Control could be programmed. Supports such as couches and limb rests could be provided in lieu of the stool 19.
Whilst the apparatus shown is intended for use with a nominally horizontal water jet it would be possible to design apparatus with other orientations of jet such as for treating a reclining patient.
Thermostatically controlled water heating facilities are provided. Multiple jets could be provided which could be relatively movable or relatively fixed. With two jets regional and local treatment could be applied at the same time. The membrane could be made readily changeable so that membrane thickness could be selected for differing treatments. The membrane could be loose hung (probably with tensioning weights) or it could be fixed with a residual tension. Apparatus according to the inven- tion is particularly suitable for the treatment or ailments which can be improved or relieved with stimulated blood circulation and heating.
Apparatus according to the invention can find use in hospitals, institutions and sport complexes. It can readily be made portable for taking to patients where the patient is immobile.
