Abstract

210,162. Tullis & Son, Ltd., J., and Tullis, H. P. Oct. 26, 1922. Slide rules for powertransmission belting comprise a straight or circular body or stock and a slide or disc having logarithmic scales graduated respectively in terms of linear belt speed, horse power transmitted, and width of belting The rule is marked for belting of various kinds and plies so that the corresponding widths of all of these can be found simultaneously. The reverse side may be provided with scales graduated in terms of pulley diameter, belt speed, and revolutions per unit of time. The body or stock A is formed with a longitudial slot in which the slide B moves. Scales a, b on the body are graduated respectively in terms of belt speed in feet per minute and width of belt in inches. A scale c on the upper edge of the slide is graduated in terms of horse power transmitted, and on the lower edge are indices for different kinds and plies of belting. The scales are based on the fact that, within limits, the horse power transmitted by leather or balata belting varies directly as the speed and width of the belt, it being taken as a standard that a single leather belt one inch wide travelling at 1000 feet per minute with a minimum arc of contact with the pulleys of 180‹ will transmit 1.5 h.p., a double belt 2.4 h.p., and a balata belt of three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten plies 1.21 h.p., 1.81 h.p., 2.42 h.p., 3.03 h.p., 3.63 h.p., 4.24 h.p., 4.84 h.p., and 5.44 h.p. respectively. When the horse power to be transmitted is set opposite the belt speed, the widths for the different kinds of belting will be opposite the corresponding indices. For the purpose of solving the equation : Belt speed = A x diameter of pulley x revolutions per unit of time, the reverse side of the body A is graduated in terms of belt speed in feet per minute and pulley diameter in inches, and the reverse side of the slide B in terms of revolutions per minute. Specification 6680/91 is referred to.
