Abstract

The hydraulic system comprises a transmission piston (2) operable by a cam (1) and, connected to it by means of a control pipe (4), a piston (6) to actuate the valve (12). In order to ensure that the operating fluid of the hydraulic tappet is gas free, and without the need for an oil reservoir or a separate automatic oil refilling system, a permanent vent 5 is incorporated in the control pipe 4 and a pump (9) for the hydraulic control fluid is connected to a reservoir (42) of the automatic oil refilling system of the engine. The oil return via a pressure-maintaining valve (10) downstream of the pump (9) is into the reservoir (42) of the automatic refilling system. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hydraulic device for actuating valves This invention relates to a hydraulic device for actuating the inlet and outlet valves of an internal combustion engine, compressor or similar machine.
German Patent Publication No. P 28 40 445.7 discloses an engine in which an actuating plunger or piston is associated with each inlet and exhaust valve. Each piston is movable against the force of a closing spring by a cam-operable transmission piston via a control line filled with control fluid. At the highest point of the hydraulic system means are provided for permanent venting of the control fluid. The transmission cylinder communicates with a device for replenishing control fluid, which comprises a refilling valve, a storage reservoir, a pump and relief valve, an adjustable restrictor being provided in the region of the control fluid.
Such a permanent venting arrangement ensures reliable de-aeration of the control fluid, and this prevents oscillations throughout the hydraulic system. Venting itself is effected in accordance with this disclosure by means of a restrictor having a very small flow area.
To take care of leak oil losses, which also occur in the region of the venting system, a device is provided for replenishing control fluid which continuously supplies the complete hydraulic system with control fluid at an exactly predetermined pressure.
An object of the present invention is to provide an engine with such a hydraulic device so that the supply of control fluid, which is oil in this case, is guaranteed without the need to provide a separate oil tank or a separate automatic oil-refilling system for this function.
The invention provides an internal combustion engine, compressor or similar machine having at least one inlet and outlet valve and a hydraulic device for actuating the valves comprising an actuating piston associated with each valve and movable against the force of a closing spring by a cam-operable transmission piston via a control line containing control fluid, a permanent vent for the control fluid, the transmission cylinder communicating with a device for replenishing control fluid comprising a refilling valve, a storage reservoir, a pump and a relief valve, wherein the pump is connected to a reservoir of an automatic oil refilling system, and a leak-oil return from the transmission cylinder, actuating cylinder and permanent vent is connected to an oil sump of the engine.
Preferably the oil return of the pressuremaintaining valve is inside the hydraulic system associated with the reservoir of the automatic oil refilling system.
It has been found in practice that supplying the system with oil from the lubricating oil circuit of the engine is most problematic because the oil there is highly enriched with air which, even if a permanent vent of the type proposed by the previous disclosure is provided, fails to guarantee satisfactory functioning, especially in the case of engines designed for very high speeds.
Supplying the hydraulic system with the fuel to be burnt by the engine, typically Diesel fuel, is liable to cause sealing difficulties and possibly friction problems in as much as the transmission piston and the actuating piston would no longer be satisfactorily lubricated.
Finally, it should be mentioned that such a complex arrangement for the hydraulic system would be used with a rocker arm, but it should be borne in mind that the hydraulic system is mainly intended to permit variations of the valve lift and accurate control.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to a schematic, part sectional view shown in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing, a cam 1 actuates a valve 12 via a transmission piston 2, a transmission cylinder 3, a pipe 4 with a permanent vent 5, an actuating piston 6 in an actuating cylinder 7 and a rocker arm 13. The complete hydraulic system is supplied with oil via a check valve 8 by a pump 9, a pressure-maintaining valve 10 and a reservoir 11.
In accordance with the invention, the oil is taken from a reservoir 42 of an automatic oil refilling system present in a motor vehicle. The automatic refill system provided in a vehicle would contain refinery-fresh oil containing a low proportion of air and having a temperature corresponding to the ambient temperature. The leak oil returning from the transmission cylinder 3, the actuating cylinder 7 and the permanent vent 5 is routed into the oil sump 43 of the vehicle. In fact, the oil amounts correspond to those which, in normal operation, would be delivered from the automatic refilling system into the lubricating oil circuit. This amount of oil will in this case be fed into the lubricating oil circuit via the hydraulic valve system.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fairly large amount of oil which returns from the pressure-maintaining valve 10 is discharged into the reservoir 42 of the automatic oil-refilling system. This oil, which in contrast with the oil emitted via the vent 5 will not be enriched with air, can then be returned to the hydraulic system via the pump 9.
The embodiment shown may be modified in various ways. Physical design details have deliberately been omitted and it is recalled that it is specially advantageous to provide a cam 1 associated with the hydraulic system in a manner known per se with a pre-lift cam and a post-lift cam in order to warrant the pressure build up in the hydraulic system accordingly.
In contrast with the above-mentioned prior-art disclosure, it should be noted that the actuating piston 6 does not operate directly on the valve 1 2 but through the intermediary of the rocker arm 1 3 because this facilitates the return of the leak oil.
This is because in a configuration where the actuating cylinder is arranged directly above the valve there is the danger of the leak oil emitted from the actuating cylinder running along the valve stem downwards and reaching the hot parts of the engine to form carbon deposits there or to burn in the combustion chamber.
