Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements relating to hinges
This invention relates to hinges and, in particular to hinges including a mounting plate for attachment to the side wall or door of a cupboard and a hinge arm which forms part of the remainder of the hinge and which, in use, is connected to the mounting plate by a bolt passing through the hinge arm and into a screwthreaded hole in the mounting plate. Such an arrangement facilitates the assembly of furniture because the mounting plate is typically connected to the side wall of a piece of furniture and all the remaining parts of the hinge are connected to the door. Thus, to hang the door on the furniture what would have to be done is simply to connect the hinge arm to the mounting plate. It is very much easier and more convenient than having to fit a hinge to a door and then having to fit a hinge to a side wall of the cupboard once the door is connected to the other part of it.
This connection is facilitated still further by the hinge arm including a keyhole-shaped slot because, in this case, the large part of the keyholeshaped slot passes over the head of a bolt already positioned in the screwthreaded hole in the mounting plate and then the bolt simply screwed home with its shank in the parallel sided portion of the keyhole-shaped slot to clamp the hinge arm onto the mounting plate.Such arrangements have met with considerable commercial success but, one of their shortcomings is that when the bolt is loosened slightly to enable the hinge arm to be moved relative to the mounting plate to adjust the precise location of the door the hinge arm sometimes becomes displaced to a sufficient extent to enable the head of the bolt to enter the enlarged portion of the keyhole shaped slot and so enable the hinge arm and the mounting plate to become separated from one another, inadvertently.
According to this invention a hinge including a mounting plate and a hinge arm connected to the mounting plate by a bolt, passing through a keyhole shaped slot in the hinge arm, the hinge arm also includes at least one abutment between the enlarged portion of the keyhole shaped slot and the parallel sided portion of the keyhole shaped slot, the at least one abutment engaging the head of the bolt to prevent the bolt moving from the parallel sided portion of the keyhole shaped slot into the enlarged portion of the keyhole shaped slot to disconnect the hinge arm and mounting plate unless the bolt has been undone sufficiently to enable the abutment to pass beneath the head of the bolt.
With the addition of the abutment, when the bolt is sufficiently loosened, the head of the bolt passes through the enlarged portion of the keyhole shaped slot and then the hinge arm is moved to place the shank of the bolt adjacent the parallel sided portion of the keyhole-shaped slot.
The bolt can then be tightened to connect the hinge arm to the mounting plate. To adjust the hinge arm the bolt is loosened slightly and this enables the hinge arm to move relative to the mounting plate to the extent of the parallel sided portion of the keyhole-shaped slot but the abutment engages the head of the bolt and so prevents the hinge arm moving to such an extent that the head of the bolt moves completely within the enlarged portion of the keyhole shaped slot so enabling the hinge arm and the mounting plate to be separated. Thus, with the arrangement in accordance with this invention adjustment of the hinge can take place without any risk of the hinge arm becoming completely separated from the mounting plate.A further advantage is that during fitting of the door and even before the bolt is tightened at all, the weight of the door tends to move the hinge arm so that it is in contact with the head of the bolt and thus the abutment still engages the head to prevent the hinge arm being inadvertently displaced from the bolt and the mounting plate during the fitting operation.
The abutment may have the form of a raised pimple or rib formed adjacent the junction between the enlarged head of the keyhole-shaped slot and the parallel sided portion of the keyholeshaped slot. Preferably however the portion of the hinge arm adjacent the parallel sided portion of the keyhole-shaped slot is dished so providing a generally recessed portion surrounding the parallel sided part of the keyhole-shaped slot and it is the edge of this recessed portion which provides the abutment. This enables the head of the connecting bolt to be recessed, at least partly, in to the hinge arm and so gives a cleaner and neater appearance to the completed hinge.
This invention has particular relevance to the "concealed" and "semi concealed" type of hinges.
The "concealed" type of hinge usually includes two links connected between the hinge arm and the remainder of the hinge. Self latching or spring biasing arrangements may also be included in such hinges.
A particular example of a hinge in accordance with this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan of a hinge connecting a door to the carcase of a cupboard and showing the door open and closed;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the hinge in the open position; and,
Figure 3 is a section taken along the lines Ill-Ill shown in Figure 2 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
The hinge is of the concealed type and comprises a mounting plate 1 connected to the carcase 2 of a cupboard by a pair of wood screws 3. A hinge arm 4 is connected to the mounting plate 3 by a cheese-headed bolt 5. The hinge arm 4 is pivotally connected to one end of links 6 and 7 by hinge pins 8 and 9 and the other end, of links 6 and 7 are pivotally connected to a mounting 10 by hinge pins 11 and 12. The mounting 10 is recessed into the door 13 of the cupboard. The present invention is particularly concerned with the connection between the mounting plate 1 and a hinge arm 4 and consequently only these portions of the hinge will be described in detail.
The mounting plate 1 includes a threaded bore 14 into which the cheese-headed bolt 5 is screwed. The hinge arm 4 inciudes a keyhole shaped slot 1 5 having an enlarged portion 1 6 and a parallel sided portion 1 7. Another bolt 1 8 is screwthreaded into a tapped hole 1 9 in the hinge arm 2 and bears against the mounting plate 1. The angular relationship of the hinge arm 4 and the mounting plate 1 can be varied by adjustment of the bolt 1 8 to adjust the positioning of the door 1 3
with respect to the carcase 2. The hinge arm 4
adjacent the parallel sided portion 1 7 of the
keyhole shaped slot 1 5 is recessed as indicated by
the reference numeral 20.The recess 20 is large
enough to accommodate the head of the bolt 5
and the recess 20 terminates just before the
enlarged portion 1 6 of the keyhole shaped slot 1 5.
This is shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 3.
To fit the door 13 to the carcase 2, the hinge
arm 4 is offered up to the mounting plate 1 and
the head of the bolt 5 passes through the enlarged
portion 16 of the keyhole shaped slot 1 5. The bolt
5 is then tightened to clamp the hinge arm 4
against the mounting plate 1. A tongue 21 at the
rear of the hinge arm 4 engages a roughened
portion 22 on the mounting plate 1 to assist in the
locking of the hinge arm 4 with respect to the
mounting plate 1. To adjust the position of the
hinge arm 4 with respect to the mounting plate 1 and thereby adjust the position of the door 13 with respect to the carcase 2, the bolt 5 is slackened slightly to allow the hinge arm 4 to move backwards and forwards with respect to the mounting plate 1.However, the hinge arm 4 cannot become detached from the mounting plate
1 because the end of the recessed portion 20 adjacent the enlarged portion 1 6 of the keyhole shaped slot 1 5 terminates in an abutment surface 23 as most clearly shown in Figure 3 and thus movement of the hinge arm 4 to a sufficient extent to align the head of the bolt 5 with the enlarged portion 11 of the keyhole-shaped slot 1 5 is prevented by the head of the bolt 5 engaging the abutment surface 23 formed by the rear end of the recessed portion 20. However, upon loosening the bolt 5 to a greater extent then of course the head 5 is above the abutment surface 23 and consequently the hinge arm 4 can then be moved to such an extent as to align the head of the bolt 5 with the enlarged portion 16 of the keyhole shaped slot 1 5 to enable the hinge arm 4 to be removed from the mounting plate 1.
