Abstract

A staging support element includes a pair of roller housings 1 which are interconnected by a channel section 2. The housings mount rollers 3, 4 for engagement with a roof support member and a clamping arrangement 16, 17 is provided to allow a staging 19 to be secured to the elements. A number of such elements are required to support a staging. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Staging support element This invention relates to a staging support for stagings or platforms which are used on the roof framework of a building in the course of construction or re-roofing.
Where industrial buildings are constructed using steel frames the fixings of some of the roof framework components can expose the men fixing them to highly dangerous activities unless expensive and sophisticated plant and equipment is used. As the cost of such plant and equipment is high there is a reluctance to use such equipment. Also a large percentage of industrial buildings are roofed with various types of preformed cladding panels fixed by screws or bolts to the roof framework. Access or working platforms which are easily movable along the roof framework are required by the mean who fix these panels. Currently these access or working platforms rest on the roof framework and all sorts of methods are used to anchor them to the roof framework. The most common method used is to tie a rope around the staging or platform. This does not permit easy movement of the platform along the roof framework and hence there is a tendency for the men fixing the cladding panels to discard the stagings or platforms at the first opportunity.
The object of the invnention is to provide a staging support in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention a staging support element comprises a pair of roller housings, means retaining the roller housing in spaced relationship, rollers pivotally mounted in the roller housing respectively, said rollers in use, engaging a substantially horizontal surface of a roof or like support member, and clamping means operable to secure a staging to the element.
One example of a staging support element in accordance with the invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the support element, Figure 2 is a section through the roller housing of the support element and shown mounted on the roof framework of a building, Figure 3 is a section through a channel section of the support element; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a typical single staging with a pair of elements in position attached to staging and mounted on the roof framework of a building; Figure 5 is a perspective view of two typical stagings positioned in tandem with elements attached to the stagings and all in position on the roof framework of a building; and Figure 6 is a series of views looking along different sections of roof support showing the support element.
The support element comprises two roller housings 1 joined together by a channel section 2. Roller 3 which is of a length to suit the range of roof framework members to be accommodated, is mounted between components of a pair of formed sections 5 on a roller bush 6. Roller bush 6 is secured between formed sections 5 of a bolt 7 and at each end of the roller 3 are washers 8 which are of such a thickness as to provide adequate clearances 9 between the sections 5 and the ends of the roller. The clearances 9 allow easy cleaning of the eqipment of sand and dust which may accumulate in use.
Rollers 4 are mounted in the formed sections 5 with their axes at right angles to roller 3 on roller bushes 10. The roller bushes are clamped in the formed sections 5 by bolts 1 2 and washers 11 are provided at the ends of the rollers.
End plates 14 the lengths of which are chosen to suit the rollers 3 are welded to the sides of formed sections 5 to define a housing for the rollers 3 and 4. The end plates are provided with cut outs to allow engagement of the rollers with a roof member.
Two roller housings are joined together by a channel section 2 the width of which is chosen to suit the range of roof framework members to be accommodated and the length of which is chosen to suit the width of stagings or platforms to be accommodated.
An internally threaded bar 1 5 is mounted on channel section 2 to receive a clamping bolt 1 6 and in use, a clamping plate 1 7 is positioned on the top of the staging or platform 1 9 with the lower edge of the staging or platform 1 9 with the lower edge of the staging or platform 1 9 being supported on channel 2.
The clamping screw 1 6 passes through a hole 1 8 in the clamping plate 1 7 and engages the thread 20 in the boar 1 5 to clamp the staging or platform to the support element with packing piece 22 positioned between the clamping plate and the channel section 2 to maintain the plate substantially flat.
On the inside of the channel 2 and attached to one flange is a hook or tab 21. This acts as an anti-derailer to prevent the support element becoming disengaged from the roof framework.
The support element straddles a roof framework member and when attached to a staging base or platform base in the above-described manner the hook 21 can engage the roof member to prevent the support element and staging being dislodged from the roof framework. As shown in Fig. 6 the shape of the hook or tab depends upon the type of roof member.
It will be seen that the support element comprises two sets of rollers mounted in housings joined by a channel section.
The support element is located on the roof framework member by rotating it into a saddle position on the member and when the staging is attached to the element and to other support elements, the staging is positively located and can be moved along the roof support to provide a firm and secure base from which mean can work.
In order to secure the support element against movement the channel section can be provided with an aperture in one side wall through which can be passed a bolt located in screw thread engagement with a nut welded or otherwise secured to the side wall. In use the bolt can be tightened to engage a roof support member.

Claims (9)

1. A staging support element comprising a pair of rolle housings, means retaining the roller housings in spaced relationship, rollers pivotally mounted in the roller housings re spectively, said rollers in use, engaging a substantially horizontal surface of a roof or like support member, and clamping means operable to secure a staging to the element.
2. A support element according to claim 1 including a further pair of rollers in each of said bearing housings, said rollers having their axes disposed substantially at right angles to the axis of said first mentioned roller, and being disposed at the opposite ends of said first mentioned roller.
3. A support element according to claim 2 in which each roller housing comprises a pair of formed sections each of which carries a bush to locate one of said further pair of rollers, the formed sections together mounting a bush for the first mentioned roller, each roller housing including a pair of end plates between which said formed sections are secured.
