Fats and fatty oils, extracting by pressure.-In extrusion presses in which the cage is made of bars B fittad within pairs of hoops F and jammed by wedges l, l<1>, the inner faces j<3> of the bars B are bevelled to form projecting edges j that prevent solids being forced between the bars, and' the bars B are kept apart by wedges k. In the preferred apparatus shown the seed is fed automatically from a box D, carried through a heater and drier or moistener A, and falls through a shoot h to the press C. The oil falls into a receiver z which may be in compartments to receive first and second pressure oil respectively from the first and second' portions of the cage. The cake is forced out between a removable ring rand an adjustable cone s. This apparatus also comprises the following features :-(1) The compressing screw is in two or more sections V<1>, V<2>, V<3> which are rotated at different speeds from a driving shaft o by gearing n<4>, n<1>, m<4>, m<1>, &c., and the speeds may be changed readily by substituting gears of different ratio for the gears n<1>, n<2>, m<1>, m<2>, &c. Fixed cutters are provided between the interrupted threads to prevent the seeds being merely carried round by the screws. (2) The gear n' drives the first section V<1> through a friction device so that the screw V<1> stops when the pressure is too great, as when the feed is too heavy or a foreign body is introduced. (3) The cone s is adjustable to and from the ring r during the operation of the press, through an attached sleeve t which is mounted on a threaded portion of the shaft m of the last screw V<3> and which carries a gear t<1> in mesh with a pinion t<2> on the same shaft as a smaller pinnion t<3> in mesh with a gear t'. By means of a rod x this gear may be pushed. along the shaft m to lock the clutch teeth u and force the cone towards the press, or withdrawn to unlock the clutch and bring the abutment u<11> into contact with a stop u<2> causing withdrawal of the cone. (4) To prevent heating of the cake the cone s is prevented from rotating against it by forming the cone with a thrust ball-bearing on the sleeve t. (5) The feed from the box D is made proportional to the output of the press by operating the feeding means and the screws V<1>, V<2>, V3 from the same shaft o. The feeding means shown comprise a side opening adjusted by a slidable plate e and a bottom plate a reciprocated by a spring d and an arm b bearing on a cam c on a pinion P. (6) The heater &c. A comprises parallel troughs E. E<1> provided with hinged lids, and with a common or separate jackets through which gases from the exhaust of the internalcombustion engine M operating the press are passed; preferably the jackets contain water under pressure or oil of high boiling point, and the gases are passed through pipes immersed therein. Seed not falling down the shoot h is removed by a conveyer v'. The cage may be cylindrical or conical, and may be made long by arranging sets of bars end to end; in the latter case it may be narrowed in parts as bv using bars wider at one end than another or by inclining the bars by wedges. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the provision of abutments x<1>, x<2> on the rod x to limit the movement of the cone in either direction by automatically bringing back the wheel t<4> into its releasing position. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
