Description

SPECIFICATION Scissors The present invention refers to a multipurpose school scissors, the special design of which permits same to be used by children of any age without any danger.
The scissors of the present invention, besides complying with the specific function of a conventional scissors, is so comprised that one of the legs thereof forming the handle incorporates a rubber, while the other leg incorporates a pencil sharpener.
'Thus, it is an object of the present invention to proportion a scissors for cutting paper, carton, fabrics, etc., the edge of the cutting blades of which is rounded with the purpose of preventing any type of accident, since it should not be forgotten that the mentioned scissors is designed to be used normally by children.
Another object of the invention resides in that the scissors itself incorporates a rubber which is housed in a groove made for such purpose in a part of the covering corresponding to one of the legs forming the handle of the mentioned scissors. Said groove is made longitudinally to the corresponding covering of the leg, wherefore the mentioned groove runs along the posterior end and the longitudinal edges of the mentioned covering, so that the rubber housed in said groove can be moved manually in a longitudinal direction and can occupy a retracted or inoperative position and/or an emerging or operative position.
A further object of the invention resides in that the scissors incorporates a pencil sharpener, which is housed and fixed in an opening made in the side surface of the inner face corresponding to the covering of theother leg of the handle. Said pencil sharpener is formed of a blade which, during positioning and fixing on the housing determined by the mentioned side opening of the covering, is arranged tangentially to a conical hole axially made in the covering, the mouth of said hole corresponding to the posterior end of the mentioned covering.
In view of the mentioned objects of the invention, it can be deduced that three frequently-used device are combined in a single working element or tool, which devices are: the scissors itself, the pencil sharpener, and the rubber, which is highly advantageous and is a success, since it prevents the loss and omission of any one of such devices.
In a second embodiment, the scissors of the present invention is so constituted that the pencil sharpener is formed of an independent body which can be coupled to and uncoupled from the covering of the corresponding leg of the handle, to prevent the risk which could be produced by the thoughtlessness and lack of ability of children since, for example, when using the scissors to sharpen the pencil the child may adopt a position in which the rounded end of the cutting blades can be close to the cheek or the eyes of the child who handles the scissors when sharpening the pencil, wherefore a sudden movement, a push, etc., can cause a lamentable accident.
Furthermore, the thoughtlessness of the child makes him forget or scorn all types of precautions and it could happen that he grasps the scissors at one of its cutting blades, when he is going to use the pencil sharpener, with the consequent dangers implied thereby.
Thus, due to these drawbacks or dangers, which in some cases could produce a more or less serious accident, the second embodiment of the invention has been designed, in which embodiment, as previously mentioned, the pencil sharpener can be coupled to or uncoupled from the covering of the leg of the handle of the scissors on which it will be mounted, so that both elements (scissors and pencil sharpener) can be joined together when the pencil sharpener is not in use, and when the use thereof is required, it would merely have to be uncoupled from the scissors, using it as a completely independent device.
In this second mode of embodiment of the scissors, the covering on which the corresponding pencil sharpener will be mounted, has, along almost the complete length thereof, a housing covering the upper longitudinal edge and the posterior end of the covering, said housing defining in the covering a pair of lateral fins, the longitudinal edges of which at the posterior end zone thereof, have fins which, together with a cavity provided at the butting front of the housing and the opposed projections of the pencil sharpener, determine the retention means for the pencil sharpener itself.
Said pencil sharpener is formed of a general prismatic body, the shape of which corresponds to that of the housing of the covering, so that said body of the pencil sharpener can be perfectly lodged in said housing. The mentioned prismatic body has the corresponding conical hole for the introduction of the tip of the pencil to be sharpened, as well as the side sharpening blade. Both sides of said body of the pencil sharpener are provided with projections which will be positioned in the dihedral determined by the longitudinal edges of the fins of the covering and the vertical edge of the respective fins protroduing from said edges, determining a locking and the consequent axial retention between the covering and the body of the pencil sharpener, while at the front opposite to that of the conical hole, said body of the pencil sharpener incorporates a faceted pin which is housed in the cavity of the front of the housing of the covering, thereby determining the locking and radial retention of both parts (covering and body of the pencil sharpener).
To illustrate the aforegoing and for a better understanding of the scope of the invention, there is accompanied to this specification, forming an integral part thereof, a set of drawings, the figures whereof represent the following: Figure 1 illustrates a general view of the preferred mode of embodiment of the scissors of the invention.
Figure 2 illustrates a cross-sectional detail of one of the legs of the handle, which section corresponds to line A-B of Fig. 1. In said figure there can be seen the groove of the covering corresponding to the cut let wherein the rubber is housed.
Figure 3 also illustrates a cross-sectional view of the other leg of the handle, said section corresponding to line C-D of Fig. 1. In said figure there can be seen the cutting blade arranged tangentially to the hole in which the tip of the pencil to be sharpened will be inserted.
Figure 4 is another cross-sectional view of one of the cutting blades of the scissors, a section corresponding to line E-F of Fig. 1. In said figure there can be seen the countersunk determining the reinforcing and stiffening means of said cutting blades.
Figure 5 illustrates a perspective view of the second mode of embodiment of one of the legs of the handle, specifically the leg incorporating the pencil sharpener which is independent of the leg and in a position to be assembled on the covering of said leg.
Figure 6 illustrates a perspective view of the pencil sharpener mounted on the corresponding leg, in accordance with the second mode of embodiment illustrated in the preceding figure.
Finally, Figure 7 illustrates a perspective detail of the assembly of the body of the pencil sharpener on the covering of the corresponding leg, said figure emphasising the axial retention elements of the body of the pencil sharpener with respect to the covering of the leg itself on which it will be mounted.
Referring to the mentioned figures, there can be seen the cutting blades 1 of the scissors, which are identical to one another and are longitudinally provided with a countersunk 2 as the stiffening and reinforcing means thereof. Said cutting blades 1 have lateral extensions 3 through which the articulation thereof takes place, wherefore said extensions 3 are affected by a circular opening 4 provided with a through-hole for the corresponding articulating pin 5.
The extensions 3 are prolonged, contrary to the corresponding cutting blades 1, into the legs 6 and 7 which will jointly determine the handle of the scissors, which legs are lined with the corresponding coverings 5 and 9 on which there are supported the legs of a recovery spring 10, which spring tends to maintain the scissors open. Thus, said opening is limited by butts 11 formed of countersunks made in the extensions 3 and against which countersunks 11 the corresponding iontitudinal and outer edges of the cutting blades 1 will butt, thus limiting the maximum opening of the scissors, which is the result of the action of the recovery spring 10. while said recovery spring 10 facilitates handling of the scissors itself.
As can been seen in Fig. 2, the covering 8 is provided with a longitudinal groove 1 2 constituting a housing for a rubber 1 3. Said groove 1 2 is so made that same runs along the inner edge of the covering 8 to the posterior edge of said covering, the lateral fins 14 which define said groove 1 2 being provided with an elongated recess 15, so that the rubber 1 3 can be manually pulled to partially withdraw it therefrom, and thus to use it as an eraser. However, when the use of the mentioned rubber 1 3 is not neccessary, it will be moved towards the interior of the groove 12, being perfectly retracted in the housing defined by the groove 1 2.
The covering 9 of the other leg 7 corresponding to the handle of the scissors is laterally and longitudinally provided with an opening in which there will be arranged the blade 1 6 corresponding to a pencil sharpener, said blade 1 6 being retained by the corresponding screw. Likewise, said blade 16, in its position on the mentioned opening of the covering 9, will be arranged tangentially to a conical hole 1 7 made axially in the covering 9 itself, and into which hole 1 7 the corresponding tip of the pencil to be sharpened by the blade 1 6 will be inserted.
Referring now to Figs. 5, 6 and 7, there can be seen a different mode of embodiment of mounting the pencil sharpener on the cover 9 of the corresponding leg 7 of the handle. In said embodiment, the pencil sharpener is constituted of a rectangular prismatic body 1 8 incorporating the corresponding sharpening blade 1 9 and the hole 20 through which the tip of the pencil to be sharpened will be inserted, jointly forming a conventional sharpening device.
The prismatic body 1 8 constituting the pencil sharpener incorporates, at the lateral sides thereof, projections 21, while at its front opposite to that of the conical hole 20, it incorporates a faceted pin 22 which, together with the side projections 21, will constitute the fixing and retention means for the body of the pencil sharpener 1 8 on the corresponding covering 9 of the arm of the handle.
The mentioned covering 9 has a housing 23 which is open at the top and at the side, said housing 23 determining side fins 24 of the covering 9 itself, which are prolonged superiorly and vertically forming end extensions 25.
The housing 23 defined in the covering 9 affects almost the complete length of said covering 9, the front of said housing 23 being provided with a cavity 26 opposite to the faceted pin 22 provided at the front of the body of the pencil sharpener 1 8.
Thus, the body of the pencil sharpener 18 can be mounted on the covering 9 so that during assembly, the mentioned body of the pencil sharpener 1 8 will be introduced in the housing 23 provided for such purpose in the covering 9, fixing and locking take place since the pin 22 of the mentioned body of the pencil sharpener 1 8 will be inserted in the cavity 26 of the front of the housing 23 corresponding to the handle 9. Thus, the radial fixing of the said body of the pencil sharpener 1 8 is carried out while the axial retension thereof will be undertaken by the projections 21 of the body of the pencil sharpener 1 8 and the extensions 25 whereat the respective side fins 24 of the covering 9 end.
Thus, the pencil sharpener 1 8 is mounted on the corresponding cover 9 of the scissors when it is not in use. However, when use thereof is required, it can merely be uncoupled from the covering 9 itself, by uncoupling the projections 21 and the faceted pin 22 from the mentioned body of the pencil sharpener.
