Abstract

A carton preferably of polygonal cross section has one end closable by a complementary shaped flap or base 29. To support the flap 29, two pairs of flaps 18, 19 and 24, 25 are provided. The flaps 18, 19 and 24, 25 interconnect sides of the carton and lie beneath the flap 29 in the erected carton, the flap 18 and flap portion 22 and the flap 24 and flap portion 27 respectively being joined by contact adhesive. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A carton and a blank for making the same The invention relates to a carton and a blank for making the same and is particularly but not exclusively concerned with a tubular carton of polygonal cross section.
According to the invention there is provided a carton having a flap for closing an opening in the carton and a second flap extending between sides of the carton for supporting the first flap.
The second flap may comprise two elements connected to respective adjacent sides of the carton and which are secured together to inform the second flap.
Preferably the second flap is arranged to move from a folded position to a flat position when the carton is erected from a tubular flat condition and the first flap is movable on to the second flap to complete the erection of the carton.
The shape and size of the first flap preferably corresponds to the shape and size of the opening.
The first flap may have an edge flap which lies against a side of the carton when the first flap rests on the second flap. Moreover, the first flap may include a projection which locates in a recess in that side of the carton so as effectively to lock the first flap in place when it is moved into position against the second flap.
The erected carton may be an elongate tube of polygonal cross section and may be tapered towards the end having the first and second flaps. Where the carton is polygonal, a third flap similar to the second flap may be provided between adjacent sides for supporting the first flap.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a carton of polygonal cross section having a complementary shaped flap for closing one end of the carton and second and third flaps extending between sides of the carton for supporting the first flap.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a blank for making a carton in accordance with any of the six immediately preceding paragraphs.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 illustrates a blank for use in constructing a carton in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a view to a larger scale of the blank of Figure 1 in an assembled condition and shown partly broken away, Figure 3 is a cut-away view of the lower half of the carton in a flat state prior to erection and Figure 4 is a perspective view of the erected carton.
Referring first to Figure 1, a blank made of card comprises main panels 1 to 6 and intermediate fold lines la to 5a. The panel 1 has an edge flap 7 which folds about a line 7a and which is glued to the panel 6 when the blank is assembled. The panel 1 has an upper end flap 8 connected through a line of perforations 9 to a flap 10 on edge flap 7. Panels 2 and 4 have upper end flaps 11, 12 which are mirror images of each other. Panel 5 has an upper end flap 13 which is a mirror image of end flap 8. The flap 13 is connected through a line of perforations 14to an edge flap 15 of a lid 16 on panel 6. The lid has a further edge flap 17. Arcute cuts are formed at 8a and 13a.
The lower end of the panel 1 has a flap 18 and the lower end of panel 2 has a flap 19 comprising first and second portions 20, 22 connected along a fold line 23. The lower ends of panels 4 and 5 have a similar arrangement with flaps 24, 25 thereon. The flap 25 comprises first and second portions 26, 27 connected by a fold line 28. The panel 3 carries a hexagonal base 29 which has an edge flap 30 severed from the base at 32. The base 29 is deformed along lines 33 for stiffening purposes.
To assemble the carton, the blank is folded about lines 1 a and 4a with the flaps 18, 19, 24 and 25 folded inwardly. The blank is initially folded so as to position the flap portion 22 beneath flap 18 and flap portion 27 beneath flap 24. The flap 18 and flap portion 22 and flap 24 and flap portion 27 carry a contact adhesive which enables them to be glued together. The blank is then folded further about lines la and 4a with the base 29 folded flat against panel 3 to position the edge flap 7 against panel 6. Such further folding causes the flap 18, 19; 24,25 to move inside the semi-assembled carton alongside the base 29 as shown in Figure 3. The edge flap 7 and margin of panel 6 also carry a contact adhesive which enables the edge flap 7 and the panel 6 to be glued together.
To erect the carton, pressure is applied to the semi-assembled blank in the directions of arrows A-B in Figure 3. The carton begins to open and the interconnected flaps 18,19 and 24,25 (together constituting the aforesaid second and third flaps) begin to unfold and move downwardly towards the flat positions shown in Figure 2. The base (constituting the aforesaid first flap) is then hinged downwardly until it rests against the flaps 18, 19 and 24,25.
Such movement of the base causes the edge flap 30 of the base to engage panel 6 and bend upwardly to leave the cut edge 32 projecting outwardly as a tab.
As the base engages the flaps, the tab locates in a recess 34 in the lower edge of panel 6 so as to prevent return movement of the base.
Once erected, product can be placed inside the carton and the upper opening can be closed. On closing the upper opening, the end flaps 11, 12 are folded downwardly followed by downward folding movement of the lid 16. The latter movement causes the flaps 10 and 15 to fold beneath the lid 16 and the end flaps 8, 13 to move inwardly and downwardly on to the end flaps 11, 12. The edge flap 17 is then tucked between panel 3 and adjacent edges of flaps 11,12.
If desired, the carton could be of a non-tapering type and the invention could be used on three sided boxes or boxes of other cross-sectional forms.
The carton of the invention provides strong sup portforthe base 29 coupled with very easy erection steps and is particularly advantageous in those respects.
