Abstract

A trash diverter for a tyne of an agricultural implement such as a scarifier, comprises an elongated shield (10) having means (11, 12, 13) for attachment to the tyne (14) and being so configured and, when attached to the tyne, being so located that trash encountered by the diverter will be diverted outwardly from the leading edge of the tyne so as to reduce substantially the tendency of the trash to wrap around the tyne. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Shield The invention relates to the field of agricultural machinery - and specifically, in that field, to cultivating implements such as scarifiers, chisel ploughs and the like. Bythe invention there is provided an attachment device, the purpose of which is to facili tate the operation of the implementtowhich itis attached.
Cultivating implements, such as scarifiers, are frequently required to traverse weeds, vines and similar trash-type material - and the result, invariably, is that the tynes of such an implement become wound around with, and the implement becomes blocked by, such material. Manual removal of obstructions of this nature is time consuming and inefficient.
Against this background, it is the object of the invention to provide a device whereby the aforementioned problems can be avoided.
In one broad aspect, there is provided by the invention a device for attachment to an agricultural implement, such device comprising a shield-or divider-member which is adapted to be fitted to a tyne of the implement. This member is so configured and, when in position, so located that an implement fitted with the device, and encountering weeds, vines and similar trash-type material, will be able to traverse such material without encountering problems of the type set out heretofore. In practice, the device, when fitted to its associated tyne, will assist the flow of obstructive material through the implement and will minimise the extent to which the material will srap around the tyne and block the machinery.
In a related aspect, the invention also includes within its ambit an agricultural implement incorporating the device as hereinbefore defined.
In orderthatthe invention may be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. lisa rear elevational view of a trash diverter according to one embodiment of the invention which is secured to a tyne of an agriculatural implement, FIG. 2 is a side elevational view corresponding to FIG. 1, and, FIG. 3 is a plan view of the diverter shown in FIGS.
1 and 2.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the shield-or divider-member 10 (hereinafter, for convenience, simply called the diverter) is of semicircular configuration, appropriate length, and is adapted to be fitted, per medium of a nut 11, bolt 12 and bracket 13 connection, to or near the head of an associated tyne 14 (e.g. a tyne of a scarifier). With conventionally dimensioned tynes, diverters config ured as above and suitably dimensioned (e.g. 3 < inches to 4 inches in diameter and approximately 12 inches in length) will, when fitted to the scarifier tynes, be effective to prevent weeds, vines and the like (hereinafter referred to as "trash") becoming entangled around the tynes. In practice, the diverters will clear a path through the weeds etc. being traversed, the weeds being caused to "slip off' to either the left or the right.Paddy melon, stubby mulch, skeleton weed and wine weed are mentioned as illustrative of environments in which the invention will operate successfully.
A semi-circular diverter indicated heretofore can be shaped from, e.g., 1/8 inch guage flat iron. Nuts, whereby connection to a related tyne is effected, may be welded to the inside surface of the diverter at a suitable distance from each corner. When con necked to its associated tyne atthe selected location, per medium of the nut and bolt/bracket connection, the member will longitudinally straddle the tyne and be effective to achieve its stated purpose. Preferably, the member extends from at or below ground level to above the level of the trash.
In closing, it is reiterated that the foregoing is in the main merely illustrative of the invention. For example, the member can be other than semicircular in configuration to suit particular trash or a particulartyne, its actual mode of connection to the tynes may be otherthan described, the material may bevaried-and soon. As long as the basic principals are observed, matters falling therewithin can be adjusted in accordance with requirements.
1. A trash d iverter for a tyne of an agricultural implement, said diverter comprising an elongated shield having means for attachment to the tyne and being so configured and, when attached to the tyne, being so located that trash encountered by the diverter will be divided outwardly from the leading edge ofthetyne so as to reduce substantially the tendency of the trash to wrap around the tyne.
2. A diverter according to Claim 1 in which the shield is of semicircular configuration.
3. A diverter according to Claim 1 in which the shield extends from a lower position on the tyne which is at or below ground level to an upper position which is above the level of trash to be encountered.
4. A diverter according to Claim 1 in which the rear extremities of the shield extend rearwardly of the leading edge ofthetyneto a position between the leading edge and the centre line of the tyne.
5. A diverter according to Claim 3 in which the rear extremities of the shield extend rearwardly of the leading edge of the tyne to a position between the leading edge and'the centre line of the tyne.
6. An agricultural implement having a diverter as claimed in Claim 1 The drawing(s) originally filed was/were informal and the print here reproduced is taken from a later filed formal copy.
