Abstract

An adjusting mechanism for aircraft seats includes a clamping member 10 having an open ring portion 11 substantially embracing a tubular bearing portion 4 on which a seat back frame member 1 is rotatable. The clamping portion is adjustable by means of a screw 12. The opposite end of the clamping member is made solid with the back frame member 1 by means of a pin 8 which has an extension 8a cooperating with a stop portion 7 solid with the tubular bearing portion 4. As illustrated in Figure 2, the stop portion 7 is one arm of a lever 6 which has a lower extension 17 for attachment to a recliner mechanism. In an alternative, the lever 6 may be made solid with the seat frame member 2. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved breakover mechanism This invention relates to breakover mechanisms for seats, such as aircraft seats.
In public transport seating, particularly for aircraft, there is a need for the back of a seat to yield forwardly against resistance so that injury to passengers in the seat behind is minimised in the event of their being thrown forward against the seat back. The provision of resistance enables the seat back to apply a retarding force to the passenger. Such a mechanism is known as a breakover mechanism.
Conveniently a breakover mechanism is provided by an arrangement of friction discs loaded by a spring abutting on an adjustable stop.
The resistance is adjusted by adjusting the position of the stop, which is usually difficult of access and also accuracy of adjustment to achieve a given resistance is hard to obtain.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a breakover mechanism for a seat back comprising a seat back frame member rotationally mounted on a member having an annular bearing surface, and a clamping member solid with the seat back frame member and including a part embracing a major portion of the said bearing surface and arranged to be in adjustable clamping relationship with the said bearing surface.
By providing a clamp which embraces a major portion of the bearing surface, the frictional breakover resistance can be readily easily adjusted, e.g. by a screw driver.
In order to save weight, the said member is perferably of tubular section. Further, the tubular section member may be rotatably mounted on a seat frame member and attached to a recliner mechanism which nornally retains the tubular member in a predetermined but adjustable position.
A stop may be mounted on the member with the bearing surface to define a normal position of the seat back frame member and to support the seat back frame member in such position. The stop may be adjustable, and a second stop may also be provided to limit the breakover movement.
The invention further incorporates a seat back assembly having a breakover mechanism according to the invention as set forth above.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a breakover mechanism in accordance with one embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the breakover mechanism of Figure 1 in position on a seat frame member; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 and showing a modification; and Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 and showing a further modification.
Referring first to figures 1 and 2, a portion of the seat back frame member is indicated by reference numeral 1, and figure 2 shows a seat frame member 2. A support tube 3 is solid with the seat frame member 2 and has freely rotatable thereon a short tube 4 having an upstanding collar 5 adjacent to one end remote from the seat frame member 2. The tube 4 passes through the seat back frame member 1 which is rotatable on a bearing surface of the tube 4 between the collar 5 and a lever 6 which is solid with the tube 4. The lever 6 has an upwardly extending arm 7 which acts as an abutment or stop for a pin 8 which extends through the seat frame member, and the exact stop position is determined by means of an adjusting screw having a knurled head 9 and projecting through the arm 7 so that the opposite end of the adjusting screw forms part of an abutment surface.
A clamping member 10 has a split end 11 embracing the tube 4 with a frictional grip, and the frictional engagement is adjustable by means of a screw 12 which acts to tighten or loosen the split end 1 The adjusting screw 12 has a head 13 which is readily rotatable by means of a screw driver of suitable form inserted from behind the seat. The clamping member 10 has an upper ring 14 surrounding the pin 8 so that the frictional grip of the open end 12 on the tube 4 clamps the seat frame member 1 to the tube 4 in normal operation. An extension 8a of the pin 8 abuts the stop arm of the lever 6 to retain the seat back member in a normal seating position. The lever 6 also has a downwardly extending arm 1 6 and in the embodiments of figures 1 and 2 this is provided with an extension 1 7 for attachment to a seat recliner mechanism adapted to rock the lever about the axis of the tube 3 and thus move the seat back frame member 1 to a desired position within a given range. During this operation, the tube 4 and the seat back frame member 1 moves as a unit with the lever 6.
In the event of any forwardly directed impact on the seat back, i.e. generally in a direction from left to right of figure 1 , the friction between the clamping member 10 and the tube 4 resists movement of the seat back, but should the impact be sufficiently great, the seat back will yield against the frictional resistance, thus providing a breakover action. Such action provides a retarding force on a person or object thrown against the seat back but this is limited to safe levels by appropriate selection of the frictional resistance. It will be appreciated that during a normal breakover situation the recliner mechanism will hold the lever 6 substantially rigidly, so that the tube 4 is maintained stationary.
In the modification of the invention shown in figure 3, the extension 17 to the lever arm 1 6 is omitted and the lever arm 1 6 is itself made solid with the seat frame member 2 by means of a pin 21 passing through a hole 22 in the lever arm 16 and secured in a cross tube 23 in the seat frame member 2. This variation of the invention is for non-reclining seats and it will be seen that the lever 6 is rigidly secured to the seat frame member 2, and thus the tube 4 is solidly anchored. In the variation as shown in figure 4, the lever 6 is provided with a forward projection 25 which presents a second stop to limit the forward motion of the pin extension 8a on breakover. The extreme forward position on breakover is illustrated in dotted lines.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
