Abstract
A blow-moulded plastics barrel suitable for horizontal storage, has an external integral flange 5 at its neck, and a lid 2 with a capital U-section edge region and an external flange 4. To provide rigidity of the inner side wall 6 of the lid edge and enable this to act as a rigid radial support for the barrel neck flange 5, the lid base 3 projects into the barrel below the flange 5 and reinforcing ribs 10 extend between the lid base and the inner side wall 6 of the lid. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Plastics barrel
The invention relates to a blow-moulded plastics barrel which comprises a barrel lid and a flange ring which is at a distance below the barrel opening, is formed directly from the barrel wall, is solid and extends outwards and against which flange ring an external edge flange of the lid, which is placed upon the neck of the opening of the barrel abuts when external axial stress is applied, wherein an inner edge side wall of the lid, projecting from the dished lid base, abuts against the neck, and a sealing ring, inserted between inner and outer side walls of the lid, is pressed against the outer edge of the neck by means of a clamping ring which embraces the flange ring of the barrel and the external flange of the lid.
Barrels of this type when full can be vertically palletized and stacked one on top of another in columns without the risk of deformations and leaks in the barrel-lid connection. The sealing between the lid and the barrel also cannot be crushed or shifted from its seating if the external axial load increases greatly, since the insertion path of the lid is blocked by the flange ring of the barrel, which is oppcsite the outer edge flange of the lid. The clamping ring which holds the lid on the flange ring of the barrel, prevents the lid from being lifted from its sealing position if the interior pressure of the barrel increases.
If, however, barrels of this type are stored horizontally or if they are stacked horizontally one above another to form tiers, leaks occur in the sealing area of the lid since the wall area, although it is strengthened by the solid flange ring, and the neck of the barrel connected thereto become deformed when partial radial stress occurs, and is drawn out from its sealing position on the barrel lid.
However, in the case of certain fillings of the barrel a horizontal storage of the barrel is a prerequisite for maintaining the filling weight. Fish, for example, are stored together with brine in shipping casks. The barrels which are made of wood have to be stored horizontally in order that the brine constantly circulates around the fish. For this purpose, each barrel has to be rotated about its longitudinal axis at particular intervals.
Between each tier of barrels, in the case of barrels which are stacked horizontally one on top of the other, two planks are inserted in each case in each row of barrels, these planks intersecting the longitudinal axis of the barrel at the wall top and the base area. In order to rotate barrels such that circulation around the fish is provided, the barrel tiers are repacked from top to bottom and are stacked up once again after altering the rotational position.
Since metal barrels cannot be used for storing fish and shipment, wooden barrels are used as these can withstand partial radial pressure in the case of horizontal storage and stacking and they do not adversely affect the filling. It is expensive to manufacture wooden barrels of this type and the preparations for the filling are also costly, since the barrels have to be soaked beforehand for liquid-tightness. A further disadvantage is that they can only be used as one trip containers. The risk of breakage is also particularly great when filled wooden barrels fall out of the stack formation or working conditions are rough.
The object is to provide plastics barrels of the above-mentioned type in such a manner that it is possible to store them horizontally without the danger of leakage in the case of pressures which partially act iaterally on the barrel wall and which arise from this positioning. It is also desired to stack filled barrels in several tiers one on top of the other in the case of high specific surface load by inserting planks. This utilizes the possibility for reuse of plastics barrels which are suitable for foodstuffs and which are of the conventional type with a volumetric capacity of 1 20 litres and more.
At least 4 tiers of filled barrels one on top of the other should be possible for fairly long periods of time.
These objects are achieved in accordance with the invention in that the lid inner side wall, which cannot be deformed and which projects into the neck of the opening of the barrel, forms a rigid radial support for the flange ring of the barrel, the base of the lid projecting into the barrel opening below the surface of the flange ring, and starshaped reinforcement members being provided between the base of the lid and the inner wall of the lid over the inner periphery of the lid.
For a particularly resistant reinforcement of the lid, the inner edge of the lid is extended downwards beyond the base of the lid and a second ring projection is formed at the lid base concentric to the extension, both ring projections being mutually connected, so as to form a peripheral box girder, by radial ribs projecting from the base of the lid.
If large capacity barrels are loaded for a long period of time this can, in exceptional cases, lead to the distortion of the reinforcement ribs such that the lid loses stability. In order to counter this the inner edge of the lid may be supported by a non-deformable insert plate, whose outer edge, when inserted, extends as far as the inner surface of the inner side wall of the lid, notches being provided at the external periphery of the insert plate as openings for the reinforcement ribs. The insert plate may, for example, be a plywood disk.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, by way of example, in the drawings: Figure 1 shows a side view partly in section of a barrel with the lid placed thereon; and
Figure 2 shows the barrel section according to
Figure 1 on a larger scale, with an insert plate.
The figures shows a barrel 1 is closed with a lid 2. A flange ring is formed integrally with the barrel wall at a spacing below the barrel opening and is directed radially outwards and is closed on itself and solid. The neck of the opening, which projects above the flange ring 5, is designated 9 (Fig. 2).
The edge of the lid is of U-section with inner and outer side walls 6, 14 which fit over the neck 9.
When the lid 2 is in place an outwardly angled outer edge flange 4 of the outer wall 1 4 of the lid is opposite the flange ring 5. In the intermediate space between the outer wall 14 and the inner wall 6 of the lid a sealing ring 7 is inserted which, with the lid 2, is pressed, by means of a clamping ring 8, so as to form a seal, against the upper edge of the barrel neck 9 which likewise projects into the intermediate space. The clamping ring 8 embraces the conical lower side of the flange ring 5 and the likewise conically formed upper side of the lid flange 4. In the case of axial stress being applied from the exterior the insertion path of the lid 2 is blocked by the flange ring 5, so that the sealing ring 7 cannot slip or be damaged.
The dished base 3 of the lid projects into the barrel opening to below the flange ring surface.
The inner wall 6 of the lid is formed so as to be non-deformable and forms a rigid radial support for the flange ring 5, so that in the case of radial stress on the barrel 1 no change can occur in the sealing position. The base 3 of the lid and the inner wall 6 of the lid are inter-connected by starshaped reinforcement ribs 10.
The inner side wall 6 of the lid is extended downwards past the base 3 of the lid so as to form an annular projection 12.
Concentric to the projection 12 there is a second annular projection 13 which is smaller in diameter. The projections 12, 13 are interconnected by radial ribs 11, integral with the base of the lid, so that a kind of box girder is formed which provides an additional peripheral reinforcement of the base 3 of the lid and thus of the inner wall 6 of the lid.
As figure 2 shows further, the lid 2 is strengthened by a non-deformable insert plate 1 5.
The outer edge 16 of the plate 1 5 extends to the inner surface of the side wall 6 of the lid. At the outer periphery of the insert plate 1 5 notches 17 are provided as openings for the reinforcement ribs 10.
