Description

SPECIFICATION Cupboard This invention relates to a cupboard assembly.
According to the present invention there is provided a cupboard assembly having a back panel, side panels hinged to the back panel one at each side of the back panel, a rigid base supporting the back and side panels and holding them in their in-use attitudes, a top cover member co-operating with the back and side panels, and a front cover member cooperating with the side panels and the base.
The hinges between the back and side panels can extend to the base so as to assist in transferring load to the base. The hinges can act as components of a shelf support system for the assembly, and the load-transfer aspect of the hinge then becomes very useful.
The base is rigid, preferably steel or other metal, and has the effect of bracing the assembly structure. The back and side panels can be screwed or otherwise secured to the base; castors and/or height adjusters may be provided on the base.
The hinges may be on brackets formed of rigid strips, one of which is secured to the side panel and the other to the back panel.
One of the strips may extend between the back and side panels and may have a laterally-extending flange which lies along the rear edge of the side panel to form a trim strip.
The top cover member may assist in bracing the structure and may be in the form of a panel or box which is located on the back and side panels.
The front cover member may have access means such for example as a door or roller shutter; in the latter case the roller itself is preferably retractably mounted within a box top cover member and the shutter may be guided in channel members mounted on the side panels.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a cupboard assembly of the invention in its in-use position, partly cut away.
Referring to the drawing, the cupboard has a back panel 1 at each side of which is hinged a side panel 2. The panels 1 and 2 are made of wood. The side panels 2 are each connected to the back panel 1 through hinge mechanisms 3 consisting of an elongate hinge 4 one arm of which is secured to the back panel the other arm being secured to a generally J-shaped bracket 5. The bracket 5 has an upturned face 6 spaced from the back panel 1 and terminates at the end of the longer arm of the J in a lateral flange 7 which extends across and is coterminous with the upright rear edge of the side panel 2, thus forming an edge trim strip. The bracket 5 is of such a shape when assembled the back and side panels 1 and 2 lie neatly against each as shown in the drawing.
The apertured face 6 is for receiving support brackets for shelves (not shown) and a cranked plate 8. A plate 8 is provided at each side of the assembly in corresponding positions on the face 6 and each has location members (not shown) between which a roller extends, the roller having wound round it a tambour, or roller shutter 9.
The front edge position of each side panel 2 carries a facing extension 10 to which is secured a U-shaped channel member 11 opening inwardly of the side member 2 to provide a guide for the tambour 9 on unrolling it from its roller close the front of the cupboard. Top and facia panels 1 2 and 1 2A are secured to the back and sided panels 1 and 2 to close off the top of the cupboard and conceal the tambour roller.
The back and side panels 1 and 2 are located and secured on a rigid steel base frame 14 of square-section tubing, and this frame 1 4 carries height adjusters for levelling the cupboard and castors for its transport, if required. A drop-in base panel 1 5 sits on brackets 1 3 on the frame 1 4.
The assembly of this embodiment of the invention is originally packed flat, with the side panels 2 folded about the hinges 4 and the top and facia panels 1 2 and 1 2A, base panel 1 5 and tambour and roller 9 dismantled. To construct the cupboard the side panels 2 are opened into the position shown in the drawing and the back and side panels 1 and 2 are secured to the base frame 1 4. The pltes 8 and tambour 9 are located on the brackets 5 and the top and facia panels 1 2 and 1 2A secured to the back and side panels 1 and 2. The top panel 12 and base frame 14 then act together to brace the structure.
Shelves can then be added as desired by locating brackets in the apertures of the face 6 at the appropriate positions, and the weight of the shelves is transferred through the side panels 2 by means of the bracket 5 to the steel base frame 1 5.
The cupboard can be opened and closed by retracting or extending the tambour 9.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
