Abstract

A rotary drum arrangement is provided for use with a table lamp and carries a greeting, pattern, or the like. The drum rotates in use and is pivoted on a mounting point adapted for fixing on the lamp so that the point is located immediately above the bulb position. The drum is made of heat resisting material and incorporates the greeting, pattern, or the like (preferably as cutouts) in its cylindrical wall. Preferably, the means for rotating the drum comprises radially extending vanes at the top end of the drum, the vanes being angled and set appropriately so that, in use, rising currents of hot air from the bulb cause right or left hand rotation of said drum. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to lamps The invention relates to lamps, such as table lamps or electric lights.

According to the invention the lamp incorporates a rotary drum arrangement for providing a moving picture or greeting, in use.

The rotary drum material has to be heat resistant, because it is placed around an electric bulb. The rotary drum can be made from light metal, fibre glass or glass. In a preferred form it is made from aluminium sheet from which patterns and/or messages are cut out. When the patterns or messages have been cut from the aluminium, coloured film can be fixed over them. This sheet is then bent around and secured as a drum. The drum is supported around the table lamp so that in use the light shines through, highlighting the picture and/or greeting.

The top end of the drum is formed with radially extending vanes which can be "set" for either left or right hand rotation, according to the direction in which the drum is required to rotate. A pointed cylindrical cap is fixed at the centre of the vanes via a suitable support ring, the open end facing downwards. A wire support is made, as seen in the diagram, the size of which is determined by the size of the drum.

Different types of see-through, fixed lampshades can be located to surround the rotary drum. Thus, the lamp shade can be corrugated, diamond cut or have other different patterns, each type serving to provide different reflections from the light shining through the rotary drum.

To assemble the lamp, reference is made to the attached diagram, from 1 - 6.

The lamp can be used for Christmas greetings, dances, birthdays, celebrations, shows or advertising in shop windows.

Instructions for use Make sure the lamp is switched off before handling.

Always keep in a vertical position.

Keep away from draughts.

Keep the vanes clear for good ventilation.

To assemble Place the lamp shade over the table lamp. Secure the wire support over the bulb socket with the screw ring. Fix the electric bulb into the socket, and place the rotary drum over it.

The point of the wire support should be fitted into the cylindrical cap, in the centre of the rotary drum.

The rotary drum can be made to rotate either mechanically i.e. via a small electrode motor, or manually i.e. using the heat from the light as convection currents.

The lamp can be hung from the ceiling or affixed to a wall.

Instead of a table lamp as described above, the rotary drum/lamp shade arrangement may be used for a ceiling hung electric light. In this case, to emphasize the light reflections the drum and lamp shade may have walls of curved cross-section e.g.

bowl or spherical shaped.

CLAIMS (Filed 29June1981) 1. A rotary drum arrangement for a lamp of the kind having a bulb holder for a bulb characterised in that said arrangement comprises a drum support providing a mounting point and adapted for fixing so that the point is located immediately above the bulb position, a cylindrical drum one (top) end of which is provided with a central cap for rotatably mounting on said mounting point, the drum being of heat resisting material and incorporating a greeting, message, picture and (or other pattern in its cylindrical wall, and means for rotating the drum on said mounting point.

2. A rotary drum arrangement according to Claim 1, characterised in that said means for rotating the drum on said mounting comprises radially extending vanes at said one (top) end of which support said cap, the vanes being angled and set appropriately so that, in use, rising currents of hot air from the bulb cause right or left hand rotation of said drum.

3. A rotary drum arrangement according to Claim 1, or Claim 2, wherein the greetings, patterns, orthe like are cut-out from the wall of the drum.

4. A rotary drum arrangement according to Claim 3, wherein at least some of the cut-outs are covered with coloured film.

5. Atable lamp having mounted thereon a rotary drum assembly according to any one of Claims 1 to 4.

6. Atable lamp according to Claim 5, wherein the drum of the rotary drum arrangement is located to be surrounded by a fixed lampshade, said lampshade being of a "see through" material, e.g.

translucent or transparent.

7. A table lamp according to Claim 6, wherein the fixed lampshade is corrugated or patterned so as to provide, in use, reflections from light passing through the greetings, patterns, or the like of the rotating drum.

8. A rotary drum arrangement constructed, arranged and adapted for use substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.

9. Atable lamp incorporating a rotary drum arrangement according to Claim 8.

The rotary drum material has to be heat resistant, because it is placed around an electric bulb. The rotary drum can be made from light metal, fibre glass or glass. 2. A rotary drum arrangement according to Claim 3, wherein at least some of the cut-outs are covered with coloured film.

3. A rotary drum arrangement according to Claim 1,or 2, wherein the cylindrical drum is formed from aluminium.

4. Atable lamp having mounted thereon a rotary drum assembly according to any one of Claims 1 to 3.

5. Atable lamp according to Claim 4, wherein the drum of the rotary drum arrangement is located to be surrounded by a fixed lampshade, which is formed from a translucent or transparent material.

6. Atable lamp accordingto Claim 5, wherein the fixed lampshade material is corrugated or is formed with facets, or cut patterns so that, in use, the fixed lampshade causes reflections to be made from light passing through the greetings, patterns, or the like of the rotating drum.

7. A rotary drum arrangement constructed, arranged and adapted for use substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.
