Abstract
A tank 1 is divided internally into upper and lower chambers 11 and 12 by a diaphragm 10. The chamber 11 contains compressed air and the chamber 12 may contain water, for example, which by the compressed air is forced out through a duct 3-5 and a quick - release coupling 6, 7, of which the socket 6 incorporates an automatically closing valve. Refilling of the tank 1 is achieved by connecting the socket 6 to another plug 7 connected to a mains water supply. <IMAGE>
Description
Specification
A device for containing fluid under pressure
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a device for containing fluid under pressure, comprising the container, movable wall means dividing said container internally into the first and second chambers for containing a compressed gas and said fluid under pressure, respectively, duct means for leading said fluid under a pressure external of said device to said second chamber and leading said fluid under the pressure of said gas in said first chamber from said second chamber, valve means arranged to shut off flow of said fluid through said duct means, and readily releasable connecting means arranged to connect to said duct means a pressurised supply of said fluid external of said device.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a portable unit for containing fluid under pressure, comprising a container, movable wall means dividing said container internally into first and second chambers for containing a compressed gas and said fluid under pressure, respectively, duct means for leading said fluid under a pressure external of said unit to said second chamber and leading said fluid under the pressure of said gas in said first chamber from said second chamber, and valve means arranged to shut off flow of said fluid through said duct means, said valve means comprising valve housing means communicating with said duct means, and valve closure means so mounted in said valve housing means as to be displaceable between a closed condition in which said duct means is shut off and an open condition.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, which shows a device for containing liquid under pressure, and a hose device.
Referring to the drawing, the device for containing liquid under pressure comprises a tank 1 which is divided internally by a fluid-tight diaphragm 10 into upper and lower chambers 11 and 12, respectively.
The chamber 11 contains compressed air and communicates with a pressure gauge 2 indicating the air pressure. If desired, a non-return air inlet 13 can be provided for use in making up any loss from the chamber 11. The chamber 12 is lined with an anticorrosion lining (not shown) and communicates with a non-ferrous elbow 3 which is connected by way of a non-ferrous hexagonal reduction bush 4 to a nonferrous pipe 5. The items 3 to 5 are contained in an annular base ring 14 fixed to the tank 1. Connected to the pipe 5 is a quick-release coupling socket 6 containing an automatically closing valve. The socket 6 is arranged to receive a quick-release coupling plug 7 incorporating a hose adaptor 15, the plug 7 incorporating a hose adaptor 15, the plug 7 opening the automatically closing valve on insertion into the socket 6. A hose 9 is clamped to the adaptor 15 by means of a hose clip 8.
The apparatus disclosed above can be used in various ways. For example, it can be used to supply water under pressure to the water system of a caravan. In that case, both devices shown are wheeled on a barrow to a mains water tap and the hose 9 is connected to the tap. With the coupling 6,7 engaged, the water tap is turned on and the water is forced into the chamber 12, the diaphragm 10 compressing the air in the chamber 11. When the chamber 12 has been sufficiently filled the hose 9 is disconnected from the mains water tap and the two devices are wheeled back to the caravan, the plug 7 is disconnected from the socket 6 and another plug 7 connected to the water system of the caravan is inserted into the socket 6. The compressed air in the chamber 11 then forces the water 12 to the various water taps in the caravan itself.A similar arrangement can be used to provide water under pressure on a boat, except that in that case the tank 1 could be permanently fixed in position in the boat and the boat itself brought to within range of the mains water tap. The apparatus is also applicable to a horticultural or agricultural sprayer. Furthermore, the tank 1 could constitute a beer or soft drinks barrel in which, instead of water being forced under pressure into the chamber 12, beer or a soft drink is forced into that chamber. In the latter cases, a readily replaceable bag could be provided in the tank 1 instead of the diaphragm 10. Moreover, it is not necessary for the valve controlling the flow of liquid to and from the chamber 12 to be an automatically closing valve.
Instead it could be a manually operable shut-off valve.
