Abstract

A singeing machine is provided with two twin flame burners 5, 6 to singe a fabric 1 twice on each of its faces during a single pass through the machine. Brushes or abrasive-covered rollers 3, 8 raise surface fibres on the fabric for effective singeing. As the fabric is singed, it passes around centrally-pivotted, water-cooled rectangular-section beams 4, 7, rotating rolls, fixed round tubes or rods, square hollow sections, triangular sections or any irregular shape. The burners 5, 6 retract horizontally and simultaneously pivot vertically for inspection and cleaning and are adjustable vertically and horizontally. Ceramic heat shields 11 are fitted to each burner 5, 6 and suction ducts 12, 13 remove combustion products. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved fabric singeing machine This invention reiates to Flame-Singeing Machines for the treatment of textile materials.
Fig. 1.
One of the main objects of this process is to obviate the subsequent fabric, when in garment form, pilling during wear and to produce this very desirable property it is necessary to remove thoroughly and completely all surface fibres, which during the course of wear, may be abraded and project from the surface of the fabric.
It is therefore an advantage to positively lift all the surface fibres so they project at approximately 900 from the fabric travelling towards the first singeing flame, meanwhile not making physical contact with any other media beforehand, which would flatten them.
It is also therefore an advantage to effect two singes on each fabric face at one pass through the machine, without having to pass around a multiplicity of length tension inducing path rolls, which have previously been necessary to return the same face of the fabric back to the flame for a second singe (i.e. thread up is simple).
This invention also provides a second means of inducing the surface fibres to project and present themselves more effectively to the singeing flames by passing the fabric around two corners of a rectangular water cooled beam, where each flame from the twin flame burners is directed at these corners facing the burner.
Initialiy the textile fabric 1 is introduced to the Singeing Machine via the underside of an operators platform around a freely rotating path roll, then vertically through a positively driven double sided brush roll and/or beater unit encompassed in a collecting chamber, for the removal and collection of loose fibres and foreign matter from each side of the fabric before singeing and then passing around a direction changing path roll 2.
Prior to Brush Cleaning, should the fabric contain a reasonable percentage of natural fibre, the regain moisture can be removed by passing around steam heated drying cylinders.
The fabric then proceeds in an almost horizontal plain, which is adjustable, to a positively driven brush or abrasive covered roll 3 to lift the surface fibres to project at right angles to the fabric run, thus ensuring their more effective removal by the singeing flames.
The fabric path then again changes direction twice, passing around the outside corners of a centrally pivoted rectangular hollow water cooled transverse beam 4, proceeding in the opposite direction in an almost horizontal plain, which is again adjustable, to the second positively driven brush or abrasive covered roll 8, rectangular hollow, water cooled, beam 7 and twin flame burner assembly 6, for two more identical efficient singes on the opposite face of the fabric.
The fabric then returns in an almost horizontal adjustable plain to path roll 9, where it again changes direction and proceeds to a draw or pull nip assembly which is part of the singeing line 10.
The products of combustion from twin burners 5 and 6 are completely removed to atmosphere by six transverse suction ducts 1 2 and 1 3 served by powerful paddle blade centrifugal fan.
Path Rolls 2 and 9 are vertically adjustable to vary the angle of attack of the flames to the fabric.
Twin flame burners 5 and 6 retract horizontally, simultaneously pivoting vertically for flame examinations and cleaning. They are also adjustable vertically and horizontally.
Special ceramic heat shields 11 are fitted to each twin flame burner to ensure maximum usage of heat generated, and more efficient singeing.
The two rectangular hollow centrally pivoted beam 4 and 7 can be rotated through 900 and locked in this position to ensure the two singeing flames oppose both faces of fabric at 900 (particularly desirable for open weave and other types of fabric).
This configuration can also be arranged with both burners operating vertically or inclined instead of in the horizontal plain, by the introduction of an additional path roll or rolls Fig. 2.
The centrally pivoted, water cooled, rectangular hollow transverse beams can be replaced by rotating rolls, fixed round tubes, or rods, square hollow sections, triangular sections, or any other irregular shapes.
This configuration can produce singeing results in the majority of fabrics to B.S. 558811 Grade 5 as required by top quality requirements.
1. A Singeing Machine comprising two framesides secured by transverse crossmembers supporting two offset pivotable rectangular hollow water cooled transverse beams around which the fabric is threaded in "Z" formation. The two "Z" apexes are duplicated by virtue of passing around the two rectangular transverse beams, each of the four apexes or corners being subjected to a singeing flame from two special twin flame singeing burners Fig. 1.
This configuration provides the two fabric face and two fabric back face singes at one pass, using a simple minimum length tension inducing thread up.
Surface fibres are lifted by positively driven brush or abrasive rolls before each pair of singeing flames thus causing them to project from the fabric surface for effective singeing.
They are again lifted in fan shaped fashion as they circumvent the transverse rectangular beam corners, where they are presented to each singeing flame for more effective removal.
2. A Singeing Machine according to claim 1 where the two transverse path rolls can be adjusted vertically to modify the singeing angle of attack between flame and fabric in each instance.
3. A Singeing Machine according to claims 1 and 2 equipped with two special twin flame burners having ceramic heat shields to contain
