Abstract
In the application of adhesive to a web 3, a container 21 for a solvent 22 is provided in which the discharge opening 12 of the adhesive dispenser 10 is immersed when operations are interrupted. Thus, the discharge opening 12 is closed off from the surrounding atmosphere, and the liquid adhesive cannot close up the discharge opening 12 by drying or hardening. The dispenser opening 12 is pivoted downwards on arm 13 into the solvent 22, the solvent container 21 having a sliding cover 23 movable on arm 16 having common pivot point 15. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for applying adhesive to a web of material
The present invention concerns apparatus for applying adhesive to a web of material, for example in a packaging machine.
Such apparatus is known in the packaging industry. For example, CH-A 581 504 describes a gluespraying nozzle, which is intended to apply patterns of glue to wrapping materials in packaging machines. Since the patterns of glue are not always constituted by continuous lines, but the glue is also applied in dabs, the problem of dripping has had to be solved.
For the purpose of preventing glue from drying out in a replenishablecontainerforsupplying a glue-applying head, DE-A 21 60 233 proposed the provision of a fluid covering layer over the glue in the container for the purpose of separating the glue from the air.
US-A3 352281 describes equipment for separating rough-cut pieces of cardboard from a glueapplying head when the packaging machine is stopped. This is for the purpose of preventing the cardboard from sticking to the glue-applying head.
In these known items of equipment, no account is taken of the fact that the glue - or more generally speaking the adhesive - dries out at the discharge opening of the adhesive dispenser each time the machine is stopped, and the dried layer has then to be removed several times during the day. In particular, the dried-on adhesive has to be removed after each break in operations in order to ensure that, on resumption of operations, no, or at least only a few, reject packages with ineffective adhesive areas are produced.
The object of the present invention is, therefore, to provide apparatus whereby drying on of the adhesive during breaks in operations is avoided.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by apparatus for applying adhesive to a web of material, which comprises an adhesive dispenser having a discharge opening for adhesive, and means for closing off at least the discharge opening from the surrounding atmosphere.
An embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention will now be described by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure lisa diagrammatic illustration showing the adhesive dispenser in the operating position, and
Figure 2 is a similar view but showing the adhesive dispenser in the rest position.
In Figures 1 and 2, a frame 2 of a packaging machine, known in the industry and not further shown, carries a drive system 30 for an adhesive dispenser 10 for applying patterns of adhesive to a web 3 of material, and an immersion bath 20. For this purpose, the adhesive dispenser 10 is periodically moved towards and away from the web 3 of material, so that a discharge opening 12 in the body 11 of the adhesive dispenser is pressed against the surface of the web 3 of material to apply spots of adhesive thereto. A pivotable co-operating holder4 is rotatable on a support 6 and is secured to a feed table 1 firmly mounted on the machine frame; the holder 4 serves to hold down the web 3 of material when the adhesive dispenser 10 is pressed against the web through an opening 5 in the feed table.
The drive system 30 comprises an eccentric disc 35 which is mounted to rotate on a carrier firmly secured to the frame and is connected by way of means, not illustrated, to the drive for the web 3 of material. By means of solenoid 37, the armature 38 of which is displaceable in relation to the frame 2, and a spring 39, a probe roller 34 secured to the free end of a lever arm 32 pivotally mounted on a support 31 secured to the frame is urged into engagement with the eccentric disc 37. The lever arm 32 thus executes a swinging movement. This movement of the lever arm 32 is transmitted by an arm 33 to a lever arrangement comprising three interconnected arms 13, 16 and 17 pivotally mounted on a support 14 attached to the machine frame at the point of interconnection 15 of the three arms. The first arm 13 carries the adhesive dispenser 10, the second arm 17 is pivotally connected to the transmission arm 33, and the free end of the third arm 16 engages in a guide shackle 25 on a sliding cover 23. The sliding cover 23 is longitudinally displaceable in tracks 26 on a container 21 firmly connected to the frame of the machine, and the cover 23 has an opening 24 affording access to a fluid 22 in the container 21.
In the operating position illustrated in Figure 1,the adhesive dispenser 10 and the co-operating holder4 are pivotally movable backwards and forwards, in dependence upon the eccentric disc 35, between a first position, indicated in the drawing by solid lines, and a second position, indicated by broken lines.
Thus, spots of adhesive are applied to the web 3 of material.
The adhesive dispenser 10 may be a glue-spraying nozzle as in the above-mentioned CH-A 581 504.
When a break in operations occurs, the solenoid 37 is de-energized, and due to the weight of the adhesive dispenser 10 and the arms 13 and 17, the transmission arm 33 and the lever arm 32 as well as armature 38 are pulled into the rest position in which the probe roller34 is removed from the eccentric disc 35, see Figure 2, by way of the third arm 16 the sliding cover 23 is displaced in synchronism therewith, and the adhesive dispenser 10, together with the body 11 of the dispenser and of course the discharge opening 12, become immersed in the fluid 22 in the container 21.
Water or other solvent for the adhesive may be used as the fluid. Adhesive adhering to the body 11 of the adhesive dispenser can also be dissolved by the solvent so as to keep the surface of said body clean. If, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the body 11 of the adhesive dispenser is secured vertically on the arm 13 so that in use the discharge opening 12 is directed upwardly, then fluid adhering to the body 11 of the adhesive dispenser when operations are resumed can flow down from the discharge opening 12, so that even the first spots of adhesive that are applied to the web of material result in areas providing good adhesion.
This example represents only one possible way of
constructing apparatus in accordance with the
invention. The adhesive does not necessarily have to
be delivered in spots; instead, it can be applied just
as well as a line in which case a drive by means of
the eccentric disc 35 would not be present. Instead of
the illustrated container 21 containing fluid and hav
ing a sliding cover 23 for preventing contamination
or evaporation of the fluid, a cap for closing the dis
charge opening 12 could also be used, and the atmosphere within this cup could be kept moist by a dripping fluid if the cap together with the body 11 of the adhesive dispenser were to form a very small chamber that could produce the necessary moisture by evaporation of the solvent.
