Abstract

A lantern or other appliance has two handles 13 capable of serving also as a stand for the appliance by being rotated to angularly spaced positions respectively below the casing 10. To locate the handles resiliently, the casing has coaxial hollow bosses with diametrically opposite axial slots therein through which project detents 18 formed integrally with a sleeve 17 of resilient plastics material, and the bosses are engaged in respective apertures in the ends of each handle. The apertures have axially serrated peripheries and the detents 18 engage the serrations to locate the handles resiliently. Rotation of the handle about the bosses pushes the detents radially inward, the sleeve 17 flexing resiliently and urging the detents outward into engagement with the next serrations. A cap 21 is a snap fit over a flange 22 on the end of each boss to retain the handles and sleeves 17 in position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in lanterns and other appliances having adjustable stands and/or carrying handles This invention relates to lanterns and other appliances having adjustable stands and/or carrying handles and has a particularly useful but not exclusive application in a lantern having handles which are required to serve also as a stand.
According to this invention there is provided an appliance having a handle or stand comprising at least one member which extends in a loop about the casing of the appliance and which has its ends pivotally connected to the casing coaxially with each other, at least one of these pivot connections comprising a hub which is fixed with respect to the casing and which is engaged in an aperture in the associated end of said member, said hub carrying one or more radially projecting detents which are resiliently urged radially outward into engagement with serrations in the periphery of the aperture, the arrangement being such that the member can be swivelled about the common axis of the pivot connections to disengage the or each detent from one serration and allow it to engage resiliently in the next serration, whereby the member can be located in a selected position of swivelling relative to the casing of the appliance.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, the hub is hollow, and the detent or detents are attached to a resiliently deformable cylindrical sleeve disposed within the hollow hub and project outward through slots in the hub. The sleeve and detent or detents are conveniently moulded integrally from a resilient plastics material.
The serrations are preferably triangular in profile, the tip of the or each detent being of complementary shape.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of one side of a lantern embodying the invention, and Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional side elevation of the assembled components of the lantern shown in Figure 1.
The lantern comprises a moulded casing 10 with a front lens 11 and a transparent coloured lens 12 at the top. A pair of handles 13 extend one within the other in a loop about the casing and have their ends pivotally mounted on the casing coaxially with each other. The two handles can also be swung downward and spaced angularly from each other to form a stand for the lantern on the ground or other suitable supporting surface, and the body can be set at any selected angle of inclination to the ground.
To enable these adjustnents to be made, a form of resilient locating device is associated with the pivot connections of the handles. Each pivot connection comprises a hub 15 moulded integrally with the casing 10 and engaged in apertures 1 6 in the adjoining ends of the handles 1 3. The hub is hollow and a sleeve 17 having two radially projecting detents 1 8 moulded integrally therewith is located in the hub, the detents 1 8 projecting outward through respective axially extending slots in the hub. The tips of the detents are chamfered to lovate in axially-extending serrations 1 9 of substantially triangular form in the periphery of the apertures in the handles. The sleeve and detents are moulded from a resilient plastics material which enables the detents to disengage from one serration by resilient flexing of the sleeve 1 7 and to engage in the next as the handle is swivelled about the hub. The action is assisted by the inclination of the sides of the tips of the detents and of the sides of the serrations.
The two handles can thus be secured in an upright position as indicated in the drawing or can be moved so as to be spaced angularly from each other below the casing to form a stand and to direct the forward beam of the lantern at selected angles of inclination to the horizontal. The two handles can be moved independently of each other in a full circle in either direction and the location provided by the detents and serrations is firm and positive and can be felt and may be heard by the operator.
The handles 13 are axially located on the hub between a boss 20 on the side of the casing and a plastics cover or cap 21 the rim of which is a snap fit over a peripheral flange 22 at the free end of the hub. The cover serves also to retain the sleeve 1 7 within the hub.
