Abstract
A garden shelter comprising a collapsible frame and a flexible roof includes a table and seats, each supported in part by the frame. Seat 27 is mounted as a swing. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Garden shelter
This invention relates to a garden shelter which can be erected for periods of clement weather and subsequently dismantled for storage.
According to the invention, there is provided a garden shelter comprising a collapsible frame, a roof of flexible sheet material supported by the frame, a first seat suspended from the frame, a table connected at one end to the frame and having adjacent to its other end a leg and second and third seats disposed at opposite sides of the table and supported, at least in part, by the frame, the roof extending over or substantially over the seats and the table.
By the qualification "collapsible" we mean herein that the frame can be folded and/or dismantled to a relatively compact configuration suitable for storage.
An example of a shelter embodying the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a perspective view of the shelter.
The shelter has a frame comprising four upright poles 10 to 13 arranged in a rectangle, as viewed in plan. The poles 11 and 12 are situated at respective corners of the shelter, whilst the poles 10 and 1 3 are situated part-way along respective opposite sides of the shelter. At the remaining corners of the shelter, which is rectangular in plan, there are provided respective upright supports 14 and 1 5, each of which has a form resembling that of a ladder and comprises a pair of upright poles joined together by a number of horizontal bars positioned at intervals along the lengths of the upright poles. The poles of the support 14 both lie at the same side of the shelter as do the poles 10 and 11.The four poles are joined together at their upper ends by a horizontal beam 16, opposite end portions of which project somewhat beyond the pole 11 and the support 14 respectively. A corresponding beam (not shown) at the other side of the shelter is supported by the poles 12 and 13 and the upright 15, the arrangement at opposite sides of the shelter corresponding.
Between a first end of the beam 1 6 and a corresponding end of the other beam, there extends a horizontal eaves member 1 7. The opposite ends of the beams support a further eaves member (not shown) in a similar manner. The beams and the eaves members form a horizontal, rectangular frame on which there are mounted four inclined roof members supporting a horizontal ridge pole 1 8. The ridge pole is parallel to the eaves member 1 7 and the inclined roof members, three of which are indicated by the reference numerals 19 to 21, lie above the beams.
The ridge 18, eaves members and roof members are covered by and support a roof 22 of flexible sheet material, shown partly broken away in the drawing for convenience of illustration. The sheet material may be woven cloth or reinforced plastics sheet material. The roof also includes gable panels, one of which is shown at 23, this panel extending downwardly from the roof members 19 and 20 to a level somewhat below that of the beam 1 6. A valance 24 of the roof hangs downwardly from the eaves member 17 and a corresponding valence is provided at the other end of the roof. Each corner of the roof frame structure fits in a corner defined by the roof 22, a gable panel 23 and a valance 24. This locates the roof with respect to the roof frame structure. The roof may be releasably attached to the frame in a manner known for attaching tent roofs to frames.
A further horizontal beam, 25, is supported on the beam 1 6 at a position mid-way between the upright poles of the support 14 and in a similar manner on the other beam corresponding to beam 1 6. Beam 25 is therefore parallel to the eaves member 17. From the beam 26, there is suspended in a known manner a first seat 27 which is arranged for swinging about a horizontal axis lying just below and parallel to the beam 25.
Between the poles 10 and 12, there extends a horizontal rail 28 on which there is detachably
mounted one end of a table 29. The opposite end of the table is supported by a foldable leg 30.
At each of the opposite sides of the table 29, there is disposed a respective seat 31, 32. The seat 31 has a back which extends between and is supported by the poles 10 and 11. One end of the seat is further supported by being suspended from the rail 28 whilst an opposite end of the seat is supported by a foldable leg 33. The seat 32 is arranged in a similar manner. The seats 31 and 32 are releasably connected with the poles 10 to 1 3 and with the rail 28 so that the three seats and the table can be detached from the frame of the shelter. The various members of the frame are either releasably connected together or connected in a manner which permits folding of the frame to a compact configuration. Arrangements known in tent frames may be used.Longer members of the frame, at least the beams 16, comprise relatively movable parts which can adopt a shorter configuration for storage.
Between the poles 10 and 11, the poles 11 and
12 and the poles 12 and 13, there may extend respective walls having a height similar to that of the seats 31 and 32. These walls may be of open mesh or of sheet material. If required, curtains may be suspended from the roof frame for enclosing the sides and/or ends of the shelter.
In use, the shelter may be free standing or it may be attached to a building, for example at the outside of a doorway of a building. Means may be provided for anchoring the frame to the ground and guy ropes may be provided for connecting the roof 22 with the ground. It will be noted that the roof 22 extends over each of the seats 27, 31 and 32 and over the table 29.
The floor area of the shelter typically measures 3 m x 1.8 m. The separation of the poles 10 and 11 is typically 1.2 m and the length of the seat 27 also is typically 1.2 m. The roof frame is preferably 2.1 m above the ground.
