Abstract

This invention relates to a display fitting of the kind which comprises a support member (10) having hook means (14) which is adapted to be engaged with an aperture or apertures formed in a pegboard, and provided with at least one adaptor (11) which is arranged to be connected to the support member and engage a surface of the pegboard so as to form a spacer, whereby the fitting can be adapted for use with thinner pegboard than would be possible without the spacer. A large number of alternatives are described, some of which (Figs. 10-12 and 17-19 not shown) incorporate the spacer between the hook 16 and the rear surface of the board. Some are adapted to engage holes in the pegboard (Figs. 15-19, not shown). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Display fitting This invention relates to a display fitting of the kind which is intended in use to be assembled to a perforated support sheet (commonly known as pegboard) so that it projects therefrom, said fitting being used when so assembled to display one or more articles which may for example be articles offered for sale in a shop.
Pegboard is at present manufactured in at least two different thicknesses namely a board which is 41t thick (having holes of B" diameter set at 1" centres) and a board which is 81' thick (having holes of 5/32" diameter set at 4311 centres). There are also "boards" which are thinner still and which are made of sheet metal. Because of the different thickness of pegboard it has hitherto been common practice to provide a range of display fittings for each thickness of pegboard because such fittings are usually hooked at their inner ends into appropriate holes in the pegboard and these inner ends are shaped to suit a particular thickness of pegboard in order to provide for a desired orientation of the fittings relative to the pegboard. It has thus been necessary for manufacturers to offer a relatively large range of products which can be costly in terms of tools and the necessity to carry large stocks of fittings. It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide an improved display fitting that can be readily adapted for use with two or more kinds of pegboard of different thicknesses.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a display fitting comprising a support member having hook means adapted to be engaged with an aperture or apertures formed in a pegboard, and at least one adaptor member which is connectible to said support member and which in use is adapted to engage a surface of said pegboard so as in use to form a spacer to locate that part of the support member to which the adaptor member is connected at a predetermined position relative to said pegboard surface.
The adaptor member may be arranged to be adjustably mounted on the support member so that it can be set in at least two different thicknesses to suit a variety of pegboard thicknesses. Alternatively, the adaptor member may be arranged so that it can be assembled to the support member in only one effective position in which case flexibility to deal with two thicknesses of pegboard is obtained by either using, or not using, the adaptor member in question.
The adaptor member may be connected to the support member by a "push, on" connection or by a screw threaded connection or in any other suitable manner, and conveniently said adaptor member may be made of a synthetic resin material or of a light alloy or of any other suitable material.
Furthermore, the adaptor member may be constructed so that it has two or more support member engaging bores or recesses of different depths; or it may, in an alternative construction, have one bore or recess that is eccentric with respect to its periphery or said periphery may be cam-shaped or of irregular form.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a side view showing one example of a display fitting in accordance with the present invention, Figures 2, 3 and 4 are plan views showing three alternative embodiments of an adaptor member forming part of the invention, Figure 5 is a side view showing an alternative example of a display fitting in accordance with the invention, Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views showing alternative forms of the adaptor member seen in Figure 5, Figures 8 and 9 are perspective views of two further examples of display fittings in accordance with the invention, Figures 10 and 11 are respectively plan and side views of another display fitting in accordance with the invention, Figures 1 2 and 1 3 are side views showing two more examples of display fittings in accordance with the invention, Figure 14 is a plan view of the adaptor member seen in Figure 13, Figures 1 5 and 1 6 are side views showing a still further example of a display fitting in accordance with the invention, Figure 1 5 showing an adaptor member in one position and Figure 1 6 the same adaptor member in a different position, Figure 1 7 is a perspective view of the adaptor member seen in Figures 1 5 and 16, and Figures 18 and 1 9 show a still further example of a display fitting in accordance with the invention, these figures utilising the same adaptor member but used in different positions.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings there is shown therein a display fitting which comprises a support member 10 together with an adaptor member 1 The support member includes an elongated rod 12 which is arranged in use to support a series of articles which are to be displayed, said rod 12 having a downturned end 13 and a hook portion 14 to which the rod 12 is connected as by means of welding. The associated peboard is indicated by reference numeral 15, said pegboard being provided with a number of holes and the hook portion 14 (which commonly comprises a pair of hooks) is arranged to project through a pair of such holes in the pegboard so that portions 1 6 of the support member will be disposed on the in situ rear face of the pegboard.
The adaptor member 11 is conveniently formed of a synthetic resin material or a light alloy or any other suitable material and is provided with a bore 1 7 having a diameter such that the member 11 can be pushed on to the portion 13 of the rod 12 and held thereon by means of friction.Figures 2, 3 and 4 represent alternative plan views of the adaptor member 11 which, as shown in Figure 1 is arranged in use to engage the front surface of the pegboard 1 5. However by turning the adaptor member 11 on the portion 13 the distance between the central axis of said portion 1 3 and that side of the adaptor member 11 adjacent to the pegboard 1 5 can be varied as will be seen by examining the profiles of the adaptor member as shown in figures 2, 3 and 4.The adaptor member can thus be set in position on said portion 13 of the road 12 to cater for different thicknesses of pegboard 1 5 in order that the rod 12 can be set in the desired orientation in which it projects horizontally or, as shown, at a slight inclination in an outwardly upward direction relative to the pegboard 1 5.
Figure 5 shows a variation in which the rod 12 has a portion 13 which is turned horizontally at its lower end to form a portion 1 8 and the adaptor member 1 9 is in this case formed with two bores 20 and 21 projecting inwardly from opposite sides of the adaptor member but to different depths therein. Each of said bores 20 and 21 is arranged to be a push fit on to the horizontally projecting portion 18 but by turning the adaptor member 19 either of said bores can be used so as again to provide for a different spacing between the front surface of the pegboard 1 5 and the inner end of said portion 18.In the variation shown in Figure 7 the adaptor 22 is formed with a screw-threaded bore 23 but in this case the portion 1 8 would have to be formed at its free end with a corresponding screw thread so that the adaptor can then be screwed on to said portion 1 8 to an extent which will suit the thickness of the corresponding pegboard.
Figure 8 shows another example of a display fitting in accordance with the invention, said fitting incorporating a centrally disposed generally horizontally extending rod 24 having an inner free end which in the case of a relatively thick pegboard can be adapted to abut directly against the front face of said pegboard. In this case the adaptor member 25 comprises a block having a blind bore which can be engaged with said free end of the rod 24 to form a spacer thereon when a pegboard of smaller thickness is to be used.
Figure 9 shows another display fitting 26 and in this case there are two adaptor members 27 which, because of the configuration of the fitting are each formed with a longitudinally extending slot 29 whereby the adaptor member can be snapped into position on a convenient part of the fitting, said adaptor members then being adapted to engage the front face of the pegboard as before.
Figures 10 and 11 shows a construction in which the adaptor member 30 is arranged to be disposed behind the rear face of the pegboard 1 5 so that in this case said adaptor 30 engages the free ends of the hook portions 31. Said adaptor 30 may have bores which are centrally placed with regard to its thickness in which case flexibility will be achieved either by using or by not using the adaptor to cater for two different thicknesses of pegboard or alternatively, as shown in Figure 12 the adaptor 32 may have the bores receiving the hcok portions offset with regard to the midpoint of its thickness so that it can be turned round to provide two different settings to cater for two different thicknesses of pegboard.
Figure 13 shows an alternative arrangement in which the adaptor 33 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 34 (see 14) which is thus adapted to be snapped into position over the portion 35 of rod 36 of the support member, said adaptor 23 also having integral projections 37 which are arranged to engage correspondingly situated holes in the pegboard 1 5.
Figures 1 5 and 1 6 show another arrangement in which the adaptor 38 is of different thicknesses at its two ends, each end having a longitudinally extending slot as is the case with the construction shown in Figures 13 and 14. In Figure 1 5 however the adaptor 38 is engaged with the portion 35 of the support member at its thinner end and thefefore the assembly is adapted to suit a pegboard 1 5 of relatively greater thickness whereas in Figure 1 6 the thicker end of the adaptor 38 engages the portion 35 in order to cater for a pegboard 1 5 of smaller thickness.
Figure 1 7 is a perspective view showing the adaptor 38 as used in Figures 1 5 and 1 6.
Figures 1 8 and 1 9 show yet another arrangement in which the adaptor 39 is again disposed on the rear face of the pegboard 1 5, said adaptor again however being of different thicknesses at its two ends. In this case the uppermost free ends 31 of the hook portions behind the pegboard are adapted to engage one or other of the slots in said adaptor and in the view shown in Figure 1 8 the thicker end of said adaptor is engaged with the portions 31 to cater for a relatively thin pegboard whereas in Figure 1 9 the thinner end of said adaptor is engaged with the portions 31 to cater for a relatively thick pegboard 1 5.
Thus by using adaptor members, of which some examples are described above, the invention enables a particular pegboard fitting to be used with pegboard of different thicknesses.
