Description
SPECIFICATION
Package assemblies
This invention relates to packages and more particularly concerns a novel package assembly and a method of producing such a package assembly.
It is known to package articles by so-called "blister" packaging in which an article is enclosed by a transparent cover which is secured to a base which is usually in the form of a printed card.
It is also known to use packages, such as the blister packages mentioned above, in a point of sale display. One example of such a display is to arrange the packages so that they stand in a generally upright configuration in a tray and a customer can easily remove one of the packages for purchase.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved package assembly. Another object is to provide a method of producing package assemblies.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a package assembly comprises a plurality of base sheets each having at least one article mounted thereon, said base sheets being hinged to one another.
Advantageously the base sheets are hinged to one another by lines of weakness which facilitate manual separation of the individual base sheets.
In a preferred arrangement, the articles are mounted on consecutive respective base sheets in a staggered arrangement and the base sheets are hinged to an intermediate spacing web whereby, for storage and transport, the base sheet assembly can be folded with the articles disposed adjacent to one another and the consecutive base sheets on which they are carried are in spaced parallel relationship with one another.
A convenient number of base sheets which may be hinged together is five, the assembly including two spacing webs connecting alternate base sheets.
It will be appreciated, however, that the invention is not limited to the provision of five sheets but can be applied to any other desired number.
The hinges and lines of weakness may be made in any conventional manner such as scoring, slitting or perforating, the latter being preferred.
The package assembly described above has a number of advantages over conventional packaging in which each article is attached to a separate sheet.
In particular, the assembly can be used for display purposes in a stand-alone situation without providing an additional base or tray.
Furthermore, the assembly enables a variety of display modes to be achieved.
Furthermore, the fact that adjacent base sheets are secured together is a deterrent to shop lifting as it is necessary for the customer to detach one base sheet from the next adjacent base sheet and this is a relatively conspicuous operation.
The preferred arrangement mentioned above also has the advantage that the package assembly is conveniently folded with the base sheets in spaced parallel relationship and the articles carried by adjacent base sheets sandwiched therebetween.
This enables a convenient and relatively crush proof folded package assembly to be obtained, for example by inserting one or more assemblies in a carton or by binding one or more assemblies together with a peripherally extending binding or wrapper.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a method of producing a package assembly comprises assembling a plurality of base sheets connected to one another by hinge lines with a plurality of articles and securing said articles to respective base sheets.
Preferably, the articles are secured to respective base sheets by covers of transparent material which are secured to the base sheets to produce an assembly of individual blister packs.
One way of carrying out the method of the invention is to locate the covers and the articles in a jig and to superpose the base sheet assembly on the covers and articles and then supply heat and/or pressure to secure covers to the sheets by a welding or adhesive system.
In another aspect of the present invention, the method may be carried out in a continuous manner by delivering a continuous assembly of base sheets and a continuous supply of covers and articles in movable jigs to a securing station in which the covers are secured to respective base sheets.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package assembly according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the package of Figure 1 in a folded condition;
Figure 3 is a schematic illustration of a batch process for producing package assemblies according to the invention; and
Figure 4 is a schematic illustration of a continuous process for producing package assemblies according to the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1, the package assembly 10 comprises five sheets 11, each having an article 12 (in this embodiment a bottle) mounted thereon by a transparent cover 13 secured to the sheet 11 to form a blister. The base sheets 10 are secured to adjacent sheets by means of hinge lines in the form of perforations 14.
The slots 17 can be used for hanging the package assembly.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 1, alternate base sheets 10 have the covers 13 and articles 12 staggered with respect to one another and also alternate base sheets 10 are hinged to adjacent base sheets by an intermediate spacer 15. The staggered relationship and spacer 15, enable the assembly to be folded into the condition shown in Figure 2 where articles 12 and covers 13 on adjacent base sheets 10 are side-by-side and sandwiched between their respective base sheets which are in substantially spaced parallel relationship.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, five sheets are included in the assembly and it can be seen that two such assemblies folded in the form shown in Figure 2 can be assembled in face-to-face relationship to provide a very convenient arrangement for packaging and transport. The two assemblies can be included in a suitable sized carton or can be secured together by other means such as a peripheral band or by shrink wrapping.
An extra strip 37 is provided adjacent the first sheet 11 and hinged thereto by perforations similar to the perforations between the sheets 11 and the spacers 15. This extra strip 37 serves to supportthe first sheet 11 for use in a free-standing situation when the other sheets have been removed. The strip 37 can, of course, be omitted if desired.
A batch method for producing packages according to the present invention is illustrated in Figure 3. A jig 20 is provided with five spaced suitably shaped recesses 21 into which the cover 13 and article 12 can be inserted. A base sheet assembly 16 is then placed on the jig 20 and located in the correct position by means of the slots 17 which located on the dowel pins 22 on the jig.
The jig is then placed under a heated platen which can be pressed onto the surface of each sheet by the pneumatic cylinder 23. Conveniently, the pneumatic cylinder is operated by a microswitch which senses the presence of the jig 20 and is controlled so as to hold the platen in contact with the assembly on the jig for a predetermined length of time.
The assembly can then be stripped from the jig 20 and a further jig then can be loaded with further covers and articles.
A continuous process is ullustrated schematically in Figure 4. The opertation of this process is very similar to that shown in Figure 3 except that a continuous feed of base sheets 10 and a jig conveyor is employed. The jig conveyor 30 comprises a plurality of individual jigs 31 connected together by links 32 in a continuous manner so that they can be fed in a conveyor belt fashion about the rollers 33.
Each individual jig comprises a recess 34 corresponding to recesses 21 in Figure 3 and a dowel peg 35 corresponding to the pegs 22 in Figure 3.
The base sheets 10 are provided in a continuous roll 36 and are fed at the same rate as the loaded individual jigs 31 are advanced and located by means of the alots 17 engaged with the pegs 35.
A heated platen operated by a pneumatic cylinder 23 is used to provide heat and pressure to the assemblies in the jigs. In the particular embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 4 a platen which is capable of acting on a number of individual jigs at a time is illustrated but it will be apparent that a platen for acting on a single jig could also be employed.
The platen is heated to a predetermined controlled temperature and is held down under a predetermined pressure for a predetermined time. It is then automatically retracted and the jigs and roll of sheets advance before the cylinder 36 is operated to act on the next jig orjigs.
It will be appreciated that the present invention provides an extremely convenient package assembly which has many advantages over the prior art.
In particular the package assemblies permit a variety of point-of-sale displays to be achieved without ancilliary equipment; they are convenient to pack, store and ship; and the fact that individual packages are attached to adjacent packages is a deterrent to shoplifting.
In the above description each package assembly includes a number of individual packages of similar articles but a similar concept can be applied to different articles. For example related articles such as screws, wall-plugs and a drill could be mounted on individual base sheets arranged in an assembly according to the invention and the customer would then purchase an assembly. The assembly would then provide a convenient storage facility for the customer, particularly if reclosable covers are employed.
In addition, the invention provides a batch process and continuous process for producing such package assemblies.
