Abstract
The multi-purpose work surface is a rigid durable sheet metal structure to be used as a free standing bench or in conjunction with proprietary work benches. Power tools and/or their attachments can be mounted in various locations either above or below the work surface. It may also be used purely as a bench. The work surface may be attached to a work bench comprising a pair of adjustable jaws with the jaws being opened to engage the underside of the work surface and the tools being mounted between the jaws.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Multi purpose work surface
1. Technical field of application
The work surface is designed to be used alone or with an assortment of power tools and/or their attachments in the wood and metal working industries.
2. Disclosure of invention
The work surface can take the form of a free standing bench capable of being folded when not in use, or as an additional detachable surface when used in conjunction with a proprietary, portable or fixed, workbench.
It is made of sheet metal plate of sufficient thickness or sufficiently reinforced to prevent distortion or large deflections when in use. Powertools and/or their attachments are suitably fixed to either the top or underside of the work surface to provide whatever action they may possess. Work pieces are offered to the tools along the top face of the work surface.
Its distinction lies in that it is adapted to have fixed to it a variety of power tools and/or their attachments. The work surface also provides for a much largerworking area than normally afforded to individual power tool work surfaces. As an additional work surface to portable or fixed work benches, it also provides the facility for making the bench into a further multi-purpose piece of equipment.
Where power tools and/or their attachments are mounted on the underside of the work surface, apertures through the work surface are provided to expose the appropriate cutting tool above the work surface. Figure 1 shows suitable apertures for provision of a jig saw and circular saw in typical locations.
Further appertures can be provided for additional power tools.
An adjustable fence is provided to be used in conjunction with any of the power tools as required.
As an addition to a proprietary portable or fixed workbench
The work surface is mounted on the top of the workbench and is restrained from movement by opening the adjustable jaws which become trapped within restraints formed on the underside of the work surface.
There are two areas where power tools and/or their attachments may be mounted; namely behind the adjustable jaw and in between the two jaws of the work bench.
As a free standing bench
As a free standing bench, the work surface has no restriction upon where the power tools and/or their attachments may be mounted. Supporting framework enables the workbench to be folded for storage.
3.Description of drawings
The enclosed figures describe the configuration of the work surface.
Figures 1,2, 3, 4 and 5 show plan, elevations and section of a typical work surface with suggested apertures through which appropriate cutting tools may be fed. A slot is provided along one end face of the work surface for locating a fence which may be used in conjunction with the work surface.
In the figures shown, the rigidity of the work surface is inherent in the structure.
Figure 6shows a sectional view of a suggested method of mounting the work surface to the workbench in a restrained manner necessary for the use of power tools and/or their accessories.
4. Best mode
Although many modes of use can be forseen for this work surface it is considered that at present the best mode of operation is when attached to a Black and Decker "Workmate" (Registered Trade Mark).
Figure 6 shows such an arrangement.
5. Exploitation
As a detachable work surface or as a free standing bench, the large surface area provides for the mounting of a variety of power tools and/or their attachments. Its flexibiiity and robustness would appeal particularly to the building and engineering industries and in addition there is a tremendous scope when used with portable benches in the D.l.Y.
field.
The work surface could be manufactured by pressing or fabrication.
1. The work surface is to be used as an additional detachable surface in conjunction with rigid and collapsable work benches. By providing various apertures through the surface it will accept a variety of power tools and/or their attachments to be used in conjunction with the surface.
2. As an integral part of a collapsable or rigid work bench it may be used for the attachment of a variety of power tools and/or their attachments.
