Abstract

A garment hanger, e.g. for lingerie, comprises an elongate element (2), e.g. of acrylic sheet, and has differently spaced pairs of projections (4,6) at end regions. A garment (16) with an elasticated band is hangable by locating the band over a suitably spaced pair. The upper edge of the element (2) has two slots (8) for hanging a second garment (11) by strap portions (10). Both garments (10,16) may be displayed on the hanger at once. The element (2) has apertures (12) for slidably mounting it on support rails (14) of a display stand (16). The rails (14) may have end portions shaped to prevent removal of the hangers over them. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Garment hanger and display assembly This invention relates to a garment hanger and to a display assembly including a multiplicity of such hangers.
A conventional clothes hanger by which clothes may be supported or displayed by being folded over or hung from the hanger is well known. However, the known hanger is unsuitable for securely supporting certain items of clothing, such as underwear, for display or storage purposes. Moreover, it is often desirable that a garment hanger should be capable of simultaneously displaying co-ordinated items of clothing, particularly lingerie, which is impractical with conventional hangers. Conventional hangers also suffer from the disadvantage that they are subject to pilferage.
According to the present invention in a first aspect, there is provided a garment hanger comprising an elongate member having a plurality of pairs of longitudinally spaced formations, the mutual spacings of the formations of different pairs being different, the formations being such that a garment having an elastic band portion is hangeable on the hanger by elastically extending the band portion and engaging it with the formations of an appropriately spaced pair.
The formations may comprise projections at the distal end portions of the member.
The elongate member may be further provided with longitudinally spaced slots, suitably L-shaped, in a longitudinal edge portion, for retaining a supporting loop tape or strap associated with a further garment, whereby at least two garments may be displayed on the hanger. The elongate member may be adapted to be slidably retained on a support rail, suitably by being provided with one or more holes for receiving a rail or rails, respectively. The hanger may substantially consist of a planar sheet element. It may thus be produced by stamping out from a sheet of material.
In another aspect the invention provides a garment display assembly comprising support means including one or more horizontally extending support rails and a multiplicity of garment hangers according to any one of the preceding claims, said hangers being slidably supportably by said rails or respective ones thereof.
The invention also provides a hanger or assembly as above, in combination with a garment or garments displayed thereon.
One way of carrying out the invention will now be described in detail by way of example only with reference to the drawings in which: Figures 1 and 2 are side views of a garment hanger carrying first and second garments, respectively; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a garment display assembly including a multiplicity of garment hangers as shown in Figure1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings, the garment hanger comprises an elongate member 2 of clear acrylic Dlastics material (though other materials such as wood or card could be used). The distal end portions of the member 2 are formed with opposed pairs of generally longitudinally directed projections 4, 6 respectively, the projections 4 being farther apart than the projections 6. The upper edge of the member 2 is provided with longitudinally spaced, L shaped slots 8. The vertical limbs of the slots 8 are wide enough for the passage of straps 10 of a garment such as a brassier 11 and the horizontal limbs of slots 8 permit the straps 10 to be received and retained lying flat therein.
In use the garment hanger is suitable for displaying co-ordinated items separately or simultaneously.
As shown in Figure 2 a garment such as a pair of panties 16 having an elastic waistband may be retained with the waistband held under tension between projections 6. A garment of larger size may alternatively be retained between the projections 4.
Further pairs of projections could be provided at different spacings if it is desired to use the hanger with garments having a more widely varying range of sizes.
As shown in Figure 1 the straps of a brassiere 11 may be placed in the slots 8. This may be done when there are already panties on the hanger, the brassiere being hung over the panties, with its straps pressed into the undercut horizontal portions of the slots. The undercut portions help to prevent the straps becoming detached from the hanger.
The hanger 2 is provided with two spaced holes 12. As shown in Figure 3, these receive two parallel support rails 14 on a display stand 16, and several hangers can be supported on each pair of rails 14.
Because the hangers are not provided with a single hook for hanging like domestic hangers, they will be of little use to thieves and therefore less subject to pilferage.
If further security against pilferage is required, the free ends of the rails 14 could be provided with enlarged finials two prevent removal of the hangers, or the rails could be endless.
