Abstract
A support belt for the treatment of back injuries comprises a flexible belt 10 secured around a patient's trunk and has a pad which is sufficiently pliable to mould naturally to the shape of the patient's sacro-iliac or lumbo-sacral region at body temperature. The pad is generally shield shaped, is made of a foamed closed-cell cross-linked polyethylene of density 40-110 kg/m<3> and is located in a pocket in the flexible belt. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION S 52 The present invention relates to a support belt for the lower back which may be worn by people suffering from sacro-iliac or lumbo-sacral injury to enable them to carry on working.
Traditionally support belts for the lower back have used steels bent to the shape of the back of a patient to impart the necessary stiffness. More recently there has been proposed a belt having a pad of "Orthoplast" which is heated to a temperature of 8û-90 C and then moulded to the shape of an individual's back by a trained fitter.
The present invention provides a flexible belt adapted to be secured around a patient's trunk and having a pad which is sufficiently pliable to mould naturally to the shape of the patient's sacro-iliac or lumbo-sacral region at body temperature and which is made of a foamed closed-cell cross-linked polyethylene of density 40-110 kg/m3, the pad being located in a pocket in the flexible belt.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top perspective view of a belt according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a rear view of the belt; and
Figure 3 is a rear view of a support pad which fits into a pocket in the belt.
In Figure 1 a belt 10 of flexible rubbericotton woven elastic webbing increases smoothly from a
minimum depth of about 90 mm at its ends to about
190 mm at its centre. One end 11 of the belt is provided with a metal ring 12 through which a strap 13 on the other end 14 of the belt can be passed, the strap being held in place during use by any suitable means eg. areas 16 of "Velcro" self-fastening material. The belt is finished at its upper and lower ends by bindings 17.
The centre (in use the rear) of the belt is formed with an open pocket which receives a generally shield-shaped pad of depth about 165 mm, of width about 180 mm and of thickness about 12 mm formed of"Plastazote" (a cross-linked polyethylene manufactured by BXL) in a density of 40-50 kglm3. It has been found by experimental trial that this material has the required density texture and resilience and is mouldable by body heat. The pad may be backed by a rigid plastics panel shaped to conform to the sacro-iliac or lumbo-sacral regions which are the most prone to mechanical stress damage. But the backing panel can be obtained from a stock of preformed panels and the Plastazote pad is sufficiently pliable to mould naturally to the patient's back so that the services of a trained fitter to fit the belt to the patient are not required.
Claims (7)
1. A support belt for the treatment of back injuries comprising a flexible belt adapted to be secured around a patient's trunk and having a pad which is sufficiently pliable to mould naturally to the shape of the patient's sacro-iliac or lumbo-sacral region at body temperature and which is made of a foamed closed-call cross-linked polyethylene of density 40-110 kg/m3, the pad being located in a pocket in the flexible belt.
2. A belt according to claim 1 made from a woven fabric of rubber and cotton.
3. A belt according to claim 1 or 2 of depth increasing from about 90 mm at the ends to about 190 mm at the central (back) region.
4. A belt according to any preceding claim wherein the pad is generally shield-shaped.
5. A belt according to any preceding claim formed with an open pocket into which the pad fits.
6. A belt according to any preceding claim further comprising a rigid backing member shaped to conform to the sacro-iliac or lumbo-sacral region.
7. A support belt according to claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described and as illustrated.
