Abstract

Controllers for brush-type multiple windings electrical motor. There has been a lack of a reliably-operating, efficient controller for such brash-type machine. The invention provides for torque control of a multiple winding electrical motor by operating various numbers of electrical switches which energize various numbers of torque generating winding sets within the motor and by positioning a brushholder. These controllers are for a class of commutator-brush type motors which have multiple open circuit armature windings (60-61 et al. and 197-198 et al.) and multiple brushes (13, 14, et al. and 157 through 172) contacting most of the commutator (88 and 223) segmented surface. These controllers provide torque control of these motors by operating various electrical switches (1 through 8 and 108 through 124) which vary the number of torque generating winding sets (9-10, 11-12 et al. and 125-126, 127-128 et al.) energized. This invention discloses how brushholder (82 and 222) position is used to control motor torque direction and magnitude. This invention also discloses how electromagnetic energy is recovered from interrupted open circuit armature windings (60-61 et al.) using diodes (35 through 50).
