Description

SPECIFICATION Carrier bag in the form of a printed rectangular bag This invention relates to a carrier bag in the form of a printed rectangular bag.
Large numbers of carrier bags made from the most varied materials are known and are supplied to the purchaser by the vendor as so-called disposable bags in order to permit the transportation of the purchased articles. The dimensions and materials of such carrier bags are chosen as a function of the intended use, considerable significance being attached to the construction of the generally wrap-over carrying flaps with a view to greater rigidity or strength.
Most frequently the known carrier bags are made from plastic or paper or in part from plasticreinforced paper. Frequently the outsides of paper bags carry imprints in the form of advertisements, generally related to the business or department supplying the goods carried in the bag.
It is known that plastic carrier bags are particularly predjudicial to the environment, due to the long life of plastics materials and their limited degradability. As opposed to this paper bags are not prejudicial to the environment, because when inadvertently left behind or thrown away in wooded, park or overcrowded areas they are rapidly degraded due to natural weather conditions or can be effortlessly burnt using the standard refuse disposal procedure.
The problem of the prejudice to the environment and also the increasing scarcity and therefore higher cost of plastics materials due to higher oil prices have increasingly forced manufacturers and users of carrier bags to employ paper products when they are intended for a single use for relatively low-weight products. In addition, numerous advantages are obtained when printing paper as compared with plastic as the material for the carrier, so that besides the actual carrying function carrier bags of the present type intentionally fulfil an important function.
It is the great significance attached to advertising which has made the carrier bag, of the type now available as a mass-produced article, so important and this position could not have been conceivable without the aforementioned advertising function. Thus, high advertising results are achieved at low cost due to the number of people seeing the advertising inscriptions or similar imprints on carrier bags, together with the continual repetition and long-lasting effect of the advertisement and the emphasis with which the imprints are imparted to the viewer.
On the basis of a carrier bag of the aforementioned type the problem of the present invention is to so construct the same that its uses can be extended beyond those hitherto known and consequently greater influence is awakened in additional possible destinations for carrier bags, both for special, relatively small target groups and for increasing line or department-specific advertising techniques.
According to the invention this problem is solved by the characterizing features of claim 1.
Further advantageous developments of this solution can be gathered from the subclaims.
In addition to the fact that the known use of paper products for carrier bags is advantageous because it is better for the environment, the provision of perforation lines along the lateral edges of such bags greatly extends the possible uses thereof. Without their hitherto known uses as receptacles for products of the most varied types on the one hand and as advertisement carriers on the other being impaired by the perforation lines, the present invention provides the possibility that by simply tearing the carrier bag along one or more of the perforation lines the then preferably wholly or partly printed inner surface of the bag becomes visible, so that the torn open bag can e.g.
fulfil the function of a poster, i.e. a further possible use for the same is provided, besides the already existing advertising function. The printing of the inside of the carrier bag made sensible for the first time by the perforation lines can give other information of the most varied types, which can give details of certain lines or departments or can serve other advertising functions.
In connection with carrier bags used for carrying products such as musical records, magazines or e.g. the type of advertising material made available at fairs and exhibitions, it is also advantageous for the interior printing to be such that the sliding characteristics of the insides of the bag are improved and adhesion to the bag of what is carried in it is reduced or prevented.
The invention is described hereinafter relative to a non-limitative embodiment and the attached drawings, wherein show: Fig. 1, a diagrammatic view of a carrier bag with longitudinal and transverse perforations.
Fig. 2, a view of the carrier bag according to Fig. 1 in the folded-out state after separating two perforated edges.
Fig. 3, another embodiment of a carrier bag with a longitudinal perforation only.
Figs. 4 and 5, perspective views of other possible uses of the carrier bag.
Carrier bag 1 in Fig. 1 comprises two layers of paper having an adequate strength, which are permanently interconnected along three lateral edges, specifically lateral edges 6 and 8 running in the longitudinal direction and the lower lateral edge 7 by folding over and/or adhesion. The carrier bag is open along the upper wide-side edge 9. At a distance from the open lateral edge 9 which is adequate for the gripping and carrying capacity carrying flaps 2 are stamped or otherwise introduced in an aligned manner in the two paper layers in the upper region of the bag and can be wrapped over in the direction of the lateral edge 9 which is open at the top.
Perforation lines 3, 4 are made in the paper layers immediately adjacent to and parallel to one of the lateral edges 6 in the longitudinal direction and to the lower lateral edge 7 over the bag width.
The width of an optionally provided adhesive bond between the two paper layers is made such that it is located between lateral edge 6 and the associated perforation line 3 or edge 7 and perforation line 4. In the present embodiment the perforation lines 3, 4 are passed in an aligned and superimposed manner through the two paper layers, so that after fulfilling the function of carrying articles, in this case one or more records, the lateral edges 6, 7 can be separated along the perforation lines 3, 4 and the two paper layers forming bag 1 can be opened out in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
If desired, and as shown in the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, the upper portion containing the flaps 2 can be separated by an additional perforation line 5 running at right angles over the width and parallel to the lower and upper lateral edges 6, 9. The remaining inner surface in the represented embodiment, as well as the complete inner area located between the lateral edges and when not using or ignoring perforation line 5 including the carrying flaps which can advantageously be folded back again, can be provided with an internal imprint able to fulfil one or more functions.
Firstly, through the choice of the printing ink the internal imprint can be such that it ensures better sliding properties and reduced adhesiveness for the reception of the article to be transported in carrier bag 1 and secondly this imprint can consist of random information, e.g. an advertisement relating to a particular department or line, a large-area poster or the like.
The broadsheet poster or similar printed area according to Fig. 2 can be obtained when selecting the perforation lines along one longitudinal side and one transverse side according to Fig. 1. In the embodiment according to Fig. 3 in which there are perforation lines 3 along the two longitudinally directed lateral edges 6, 8 a corresponding narrow poster can be obtained or a random information sheet in longitudinal format.
The printing of the outer surfaces of carrier bag 1 will in per se known manner be used for advertising purposes, it being important for the present embodiment that a not inconsiderable proportion of the outer surface can be provided with a business-specific imprint.
If desired the perforation lines 3 and 4 need only be made through one of the two paper layers.
However, it is advantageous for them to pass in an aligned and superimposed manner through the two paper layers, so that if in said areas the layers are joined by adhesive bonds, they can be completely removed and discarded.
However, it is finally also conceivable for the perforation lines 3 in the embodiment of Fig. 3 and 4 and 5 in the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 not to extend over the entire length or width of the carrier bag, instead extending e.g. only over half the length or width of one or both paper layers, so that after tearing open the carrier bag there is over a partial length thereof both a residual receiving container and, through a corresponding combination of the internal and external printing, a new pictorial or other information-type representation. The partial surfaces of one or both paper layers placed along a folding edge possibly pre-stamped during the printing of the carrier bag can serve as a support for a stable position of the remaining bag when vertical. Thus, when used at exhibitions, fairs and conferences the present carrier bag requires a further function as a novel tool or aid and can e.g. serve as an information source placed on the seat of each conference delegate (cf. Figs. 4 and 5).
