Abstract

A collector for tape (2) or similar material issuing from a machine such as a telex machine (3) comprises a container or carton (1) of an internal width closely corresponding to that of tape (2) received within it through a transverse slot (12) adjacent the upper closed top or lid (10) whereby the tape (2) stacks in a back and forth manner in the container (1). The container (1) can be mounted in position of use by support structure (4) consisting of a holder or basket (40) receiving the container and mountable on or in relation to the machine (3) by a bracket (41). The basket (40) is shown hinge mounted (at 42) on the bracket (41) so that it can be swung to an out of use position, e.g. alongside the machine (3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Tape collector The object of this invention is to provide simple and effective means for the collecting of tape or similar flexible strip material in an orderly manner as it issues from a machine or apparatus using, or providing tape, such as a telex machine.
According to the invention a collector for tape or similar material comprises a container of an internal width closely corresponding to that of tape or the like to be received therein, an upper end part of the container adjacent a closed upper side thereof having a transverse slot for the entry of tape or the like therein whereby the latter stacks in a back and forth manner in the container.
In the accompanying drawings a practical example of the collector is shown in which : Figure lisa side elevation of the collector mounted in relation to a telex machine, Figure 2 is a front end view, Figure 3 is a detail plan view, and Figure 4 is a perspective view on a reduced scale of the container per se.
Referring to the drawings, the container 1 may consist of a carboard box or carton of convenient size to receive a quantity of tape 2 and is of an internal width corresponding to that of the tape for which it is intended, i.e. with a working side clearance.
The container 1 is closed except for a transverse slot 1 2 in one end adjacent the upper closed end or lid 10 of the container for the entry of tape therein and may have a further outlet as referred to below.
In use in conjuction with a machine issuing tape 2 such as a telex machine 3, the container is mounted by support structure 4 in relation to the machine whereby the slot 12 is aligned with the tape outlet of the machine 3 so as to diredtly receive tape 2 issuing therefrom and to avoid or minimise any tendency of the tape to bunch up between the machine 3 and the container 1.
Particularly for the purpose of subsequent use of the tape 2, a leading portion is inserted into the container 1 preferably so as to lie on the bottom 11 of the latter with the leading end 20 inserted and preferably trapped between the forward edge of the lid 10 of the container 1 and the upper edge of its forward end wall, i.e. as shown in FIGURE 1.
Also for this purpose and particularly where the container 1 is provided in an initially flat condition, the lid 10 and the bottom 11 are in the nature of flaps having folded edges 100, 110, (FIGURE 4) to enable them to close the top and bottom of the container of box 1 in a self-retaining manner.
As tape 2 is fed into the container 1 it is deflected by the closed lid 10 to stack in a back and forth manner as diagrammatically indicated in FIGURE 1 the tape 2 nesting in this way in a compact manner, so that the container is able to take a considerable quantity of tape.
When it is required to use the tape 2 it can be withdrawn by its leading end 20 from the container 1, the tape unfolding in an orderly manner as it is withdrawn.
The tape can be compactly stored for future use in this way or for ultimate disposal, since the containers or cartons 1 can be of cheap disposable form. In particular the arrangement of tape collector in accordance with this invention enables the tape 2 to be kept in an orderly manner and avoids or minimises the likelihood of the tape becoming entangled as has hitherto occured when the tape has been simply allowed to pile up on the floor.
The support structure 4 for the container is shown consisting of a rectangular holder or basket 40, e.g. made of plastic covered wire and mounted by a bracket or arm 41 shown secured or clamped at 43 to the side of the telex machine 3. The basket 40 is preferably hinge-mounted at 42 on the arm 41 so that it can be swung alongside the machine when not required for use as indicated in FIGURE 3. The hinge mounting 42 is also shown having a locating action to retain the basket 40 in the operative position for which purpose an arm 44 from the basket 40 providing the hinge pin 45 engages a notch 460 in an upstanding lug 46 of a bracket 47 pivotally receiving the hinge pin 45.
As well as being of simple and inexpensive construction both as regards the container 1 and support structure 4, the tape collector is convenient to use and greatly facilitates the handling of tape without entanglement.

2. A collector for tape or similar material according to claim 1 wherein a further part such as an upper part or outlet of the container is adapted to receive inserted therethrough a leading portion of the tape or the like so that the latter can be withdrawn from the container.
3. A collector for tape or similar material according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the upper side of the container is closed by a lid.
4. A collector for tape or similar material consisting of a container substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. In combination with a container according to any of the preceding claims, a holder for removably receiving the container and adapted to be mounted on or in relation to a tape or like issuing machine whereby the transverse slot of the container can receive tape or the like issuing from the machine.
