Description

SPECIFICATION A cutting device This invention relates to a cutting device.
Cutting devices such for example as scissors, shears and secateurs are well known. During use, the blades become blunt and it is often time consuming and/or costly to get the blades sharpened. It is an aim of the present invention to avoid this problem by providing a cutting device in which the blades can be replaced when they have become blunt or otherwise defective.
Accordingly, this invention provides a cutting device comprising a first handle having a first blade, a second handle having a second blade, and a pivot member which pivotally connects the first handle and its blade to the second handle and its blade, the first and the second blades each having an insert portion which is located in a correspondingly shaped recess in the first and second handles, and the pivot member passing through apertures in the first and second handles and the first and second blades whereby the pivot member assists in retaining the first and second blades in their respective handles.
Usually, the insert portion on each blade will be a reduced width portion.
In one embodiment of the invention, the cutting device is one in which the reduced width portion is a tongue portion having a pair of sloping sides, and in which the recess in the handles is a groove having a pair of sloping sides so that each blade is located in its handle by a tongue and groove arrangement.
In another embodiment of the invention, the cutting device is one in which the reduced width portion is a spigot, and in which the recess in the handles is a bore.
Various types of pivot member may be employed such for example as a screw member, a nut and bolt, or a rivet.
The handles may be manufactured from steel, for example stainless steel, in a known manner. However, it is preferred to mould the handles from a mouldable material.
The mouldable material may be a metal alloy, for example a magnesium alloy or an aluminium alloy.
The mouldable material may also be a plastics material, for example Mazac.
The cutting device of the present invention is preferably a pair of scissors. The scissors may be used for any desired purpose so that they may be, for example, household scissors, hairdressing scissors, clothes making scissors, surgical scissors or manicure scissors. The cutting device of the present invention may however also be another twin bladed cutting device such as shears or secateurs.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a cutting device in the form of a pair of scissors; Figure 2 shows a first handle of the scissors; Figure 3 shows a first blade of the scissors; Figure 4 is a section on the line A-A shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 is a section on the line B-B shown in Figure 3; and, Figure 6 is a section on the line C-C shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a cutting device in the form of a pair of scissors 2. The cutting device 2 comprises a first handle 4 having a first blade 6, and a second handle 8 having a second blade 10. The handles 4,8 and the blades 6,10 are each provided with an aperture 12. A pivot member in the form of a screw 14 passes through the apertures 12 and assists in retaining the first and second blades 6, in their respective handles 4,8 as will be described in greater detail hereinbelow.
The blade 6 is provided with a reduced width portion in the form of a tongue portion 16 which slides in a recess in the form of a groove 18 in the handle 4. As shown in Figure 4, the tongue portion 16 has sloping sides 20. As shown in Figure 6, the groove 18 has sloping sides 22 so that the tongue portion 16 is a reasonably close fit in the groove 18 and the sloping sides 20, 22 co-operate to help to retain the tongue portion 16 in the groove 18. As mentioned above, the screw 14 positively locks the tongue portion 16 in the groove 18. The blade 10 is provided with a similartongue portion 16 and the handle 8 is provided with a similar groove 18.The head of the screw 14 has a pair of small depressions 24 in its head for enabling the screw 14to be screwed in position, an appropriate one of the parts 4,6,8, 10 of the scissors 2 being screw threaded or provided with a screw threaded bush.
The blades 6, 10 are made of metal, for example stainless steel. In contrast, the handles 4,8 are moulded of a magnesium alloy. The handles 4,8 are moulded to the shape shown and they are each provided with a pair of apertures 26, 28. The grooves 18 are easily moulded to shape and the dovetail connection is effective to hold the blades 6, 10 in correct set and alignment, and little or no correction of the blades is required to obtain a perfect cutting action. Before the blades 6, 10 are inserted in the handles 4, they are usually ground. Advantageously, the tongue portions 16 extend into the grooves 18 beyond the pivot 12, which is the point of ride or contact of the blades 6, 10 at that pivot point 12.
When the blades 6, 10 become worn, the screw 14 can be undone, the old blades removed, new blades inserted and the screw 14 tightened up. Also, if a user of the scissors wants longer or shorter blades 6, 10 for any particular job, then these can easily be inserted into the handles 4,8.
Preferably, the handle 4 is provided with a stop member 30 which screws into a threaded recess in the handle 4 and which stops the handles 4,8 hitting together and making a clicking sound as the scissors 2 cut. The member 30 is screwed into the handle 4 to an appropriate distance which stops the clicking sound but which does not prevent the points of the blades 6, 10 coming together as shown in Figure 1.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the handles 4,8 may be made of another mouldable material such for exam ple as an aluminium alloy or a plastics material. The handles 4,8 can be formed to any desired shape depending on the type of scissor or other cutting device being made. For example, the handles 4,8 can be suitably shaped for tailor sidebent or kitchen scissors. The tongue portions 16 may each be formed as a spiggotfitting into a bore 18 in the handles 4,8, and the tongue portions 16 may extend further into the handles 4, 8 than is shown to increase the strength of the handles 4,8 in the vicinity of the tongue portions 16. The depressions 24 in the head of the screw 14 may be replaced by a slot. Furthermore, blade dispensers may be utilised for assisting in the removal of old blades and the insertion of new ones.
