Description
SPECIFICATION
Conditioning Dumb-bell Machine
The invention relates to a conditioning dumbbell machine, to a gymnastic apparatus being suitable for performing gymnastic and strengthdeveloping exercises, which-due its small space requirement-is able to satisfy the claim for motion of the members of smaller collectives of children, e.g. schools, colleges or body culture saloons, professionai circles, mass-sport clubs, as well as sport institution with high requirements and clubs and to ensure the development of any musculature of the human organism.
Strength-developing machines, equipments have been well known, which are mainly in the possession of sport clubs training outstanding sportsmen, which are but suitable for performing partial tasks. The common feature of said equipments lies in the disadvantageous utilization of the space, the unreleasable connection between the parts of the equipment, in the lack of possibility of disassembly making the transport and arrangement difficult. The known equipments involve the risk of accidents, they cannot be safely fixed, the weights (being similar to those used in weightlifting) require a considerable space, besides they involve the risk of accident (falling down, kipping, falling into the feet, the fingers get pinched etc.).With these weights the increase of loading takes place manually by arranging the weight-discs on an iron rod, representing a wearisome operation connected to loss in time.
Production of the equipment is expensive, it requires special workshops and processing machines. Their formation does not match to the aim set, they do not follow the physique of the sportsmen, accordingly, the majority of the energy of the sportsmen, is not concentrated to the earliest possible fulfilment of the task, as a consequence, the achievement of the sportsmen cannot be duly increased and no possibiiity is given for the self-control.
The aim set is to develop a conditioning dumbbell machine without the imperfections enumerated, being extensively suitable for strengthening the different parts of the musculature, which is complying with the requirements of the wide class of sportsmen, its space requirement is small and the production thereof is simple.
A further aim has been to develop an equipment for all age-groups, the load of which can be simply adjusted within wide limits, in seconds, and can be well adapted to prevailing circumstances.
The essential part of the equipment is a framework, which comprises at least one column of weights built up of flat weights, arranged in a displaceable manner on a vertical guide; in the middle of the weights having been arranged above each other there is an expediently circular through-opening receiving ribbed rod. The size of the cylindrical ribs of the ribbed rod corresponds to the size of the holes; the distance elements led between the single weights on the guide are ensuring the needed distance for dividing the column of weights into optional parts by the aid of a fork, which can be placed into one or to the other recess of the ribbed rod suspended on a wire- or hemp rope; by means of the ribbed rod only those weights will be lifted, which are lying above the fork. The rope connected to the ribbed rod penetrating the weights can be led through one or more pulleys and connected to different special machines serving for strengthening certain muscles. Theoretically, operation with one single weight column is also possible, but it goes without saying, that it is more advantageous, when between an upper and a lower framework several weight columns are arranged and to these different working benches may be connected, which serve for the conditioning of the diverse parts of the musculature and for developing physical condition.Besides, the equipment is well suitable for connecting means to the framework being suitable for the performance of different exercises, so e.g. a climbing rope, wall-bars, a bench for strengthening the abdominal muscle, which can be suspended under different angles into the wallbars, push-horn, suspending horns etc. or to arrange an equipment with an independent weight column beside the central equipment, so e.g. an apparatus for strengthening the wrists and forearms.
The invention will be described in detail by means of preferred embodiments, by the aid of the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is showing the top-view of the conditioning dumb-bell machine according to the invention,
Figure 2 is showing a part of the side-view of the machine according to figure 1, within the figure the "detail C" is illustrating a part of the machine seen from the direction of the arrow "C",
Figures 3a, 3b, 3c are showing the side-view of the exercising benches to be seen in top-view in figure 1.
We should like to emphasize, that the complex dumb-bell machine according to the invention may be completed with further apparatuses, or certain apparatuses may be left out.
The conditioning dumb-bell machine illustrated in figure 1 is built-up on a pentagonal framework
1 comprising an upper frame la and a lower frame 1 b, whereas the frame parts are interconnected rigidly by means of connecting elements 1 c. On a guide between the upper frame 1 a and the lower frame 1 b flat weights are arranged e.g. on two vertical bars 27 each of circular cross-section in a displaceable manner, separated from each other by distance elements and forming a weight column 11, as it is to be seen in figure 2; in the middle of said weights, along a vertical line a preferably circular bore is formed.A ribbed rod 28 is penetrating the ironweights in such a manner, that the narrow cylindrical parts of the ribs are lying in the spaces formed by the distance elements between the weights, while between two weights each a forked device, a weightlifting fork 2 may be pushed in and the clearance between the shanks of the fork is corresponding to the narrower part of the ribbed rod 28. When the weightlifting fork 2 is pushed between any two weights of the weight column 11, by lifting the ribbed rod 28 in a vertical direction, the weights lying above the weightlifting fork 2 are carried aíong. wh.ie those lying beneath are keeping their static position.Accordingly by placing the weightlifting fork 2 into different places within the weight column 11, the number and thus the load of the weights to be lifted can be varied ir, - most easy manner.
In the drawing single weight columns 11, 21, 24 guided on vertical bars 27 have been illustrated only while the weightlifting fork 2 to be pushed between the weights is to be seen at one of the weight columns not indicated with position numbers. Around the framework 1 different means, special apparatuses for strengthening the muscles are shown for the sake of example. Some are co-operating with the weight columns 11, 21 24 or those without indication, some are suitable for the performance of independent exercises not requiring the use of weights.
In the following we shall describe these devices and special apparatuses without claiming completeness. The standing horns 3 are connected to a rod, which is practically forming a single-armed lever to be rotated around the hinge arranged on the end. The sportsman standing between the standing horns 3 is able to lift the weights arranged on the ribbed rod 28 to be moved by the single-armed lever, the quantity of which having been previously determined by means of the weightlifting fork 2. By changing the position of the weightlifting fork 2, the load can be changed utmost quickly and comfortably without any risk.
Into the framework 1 a jib 6-holding a ropeis mounted, the angle of inclination thereof can be changed by the aid of a wire rope 5, while turning-off to the side is prevented by a rope 4, being expediently made of hemp. For performing climbing exercises a climbing rope or a climbing bar may be suspended into the end of the jib 6.
The wall-bars 7 are fixed into the framework 1 and can be fixed either in a vertical position or under different angles of inclination, they are suitable for performing the exercises connected to wall-bars. A bench 8 for strengthening the abdominal muscles can be suspended into the wall-bars 7 in such a manner that the end of the bench 8 is provided with hooks, which can be hooked into the different bars of the wall-bars 7, as a consequence, the bench 8 for strengthening the abdominal muscles, lying near to the floor in relation to the wall-bars 7, can be adjusted to different positions from the horizontal quite up to the vertical. The sportsman-turning with his head outwards is placing his feet into the leather devises provided on the end of the bench 8 facing the wall-bars 7, and hanging more or less downwards may strengthen his abdominal muscles in such a manner that he tries to get up into a sitting position.
A lying compressive bench 9 is used in such a manner that the sportsman is lying on his back and gripping the lying horns 10 he tries to press upwards the chosen weight quantity arranged behind him, i.e. the upper part of the weight column 11 having been separated by means of the weightlifting fork 2. The main advantage of said solution lies in that no accident is to be feared of, even if he lets fall lying horns during pressing them upwards, because the weights cannot injure him at any means. A pending horn 12 and a push-horn 13 serve essentially for performing hand-climbing exercises to be performed while climbing or any other exercised to be performed in the upper leaning position.
Said devices are essentially fixed in their adjusted position, at the same time they are interconnected; the height can be adjusted by means of the threaded spindle 14 in accordance with the height of the sportsman just using them:
The pushup-arms 1 5 serve for practising pushups.
On the frame 1 6 there is a machine 1 7 arranged, which serves for strengthening the wrist and the forearm; the machine incorporates * horizontaííy arranged, rotable, preferably reticuíated shaft 29, to which a hemp rope 30 is connected, which can be wound up by rotating the reticulated shaft 29, while the hemp rope 30 is connected to the weight column 11 to be moved by the aid of the ribbed rod 28, by using the solution previously described. The reticulated shaft 29 of the machine 1 7 serving for strengthening the wrist and the forearm is horizontally shoulder-high arranged, the sportsman is rotating the reticulated shaft 29 with both hands, whereby the upper part of the weight column separated by means of the weightlifting fork 2 is lifted and lowered by moving his wrist. On rails 18, being fixed to the machine 1 7 and to the corresponding connecting elements 1 c of the framework 1, there is a bench 1 9 in a slidable manner arranged, which serves for strengtheriing the feet and can be fixed in the proper position. The sportsman is sitting on the bench 19, he puts his feet into the tread-surface 31 on the tread-arm 26, which can be rotated in the vertical plane; by treading the rotatable tread arm 26 and alternately pushing and releasing the same the leg-strengthening exercises can be performed. On the tread-arm 26 there are several hooks 32 following each other, to which a rope 33-made of wire or hemp and led through pulleys 25-may be connected, to the other end of which the weight-column 11-already described-has been connected. In this case too the quantity of the weights can be varied, besides by means of the hooks 32 of the tread-arm 26 the torque can be also changed.
A biceps-bench 20 (figure 3a) is serving for strengthening the brachial muscles. The sportsman-facing the framework 1-is sitting on the biceps-bench 20 and grasping the two arms 34 arranged before him, he pulls them towards his chest; by this motion he is lifting the weights having been arranged in the framework 1 and set to the desired quantity by means of the weightlifting fork 2, by the aid of a rope 35 led through a pulley.
By the aid of cylinders 36 of a (egstrengthening bench 22 made of an elastic
material, e.g. rubber, the person lying on the bench is to be able to move the protruding arm either with his bent legs or the outstretched legs and feet to lift the corresponding part of the weight column 11 arranged on the framework behind his head, by the aid of a rope 37.
A kayak-bench 23 (figure 3b) serves for imitating the rowing motions of the person sitting in the kayak. The sportsman facing the framework
1 is sitting on the kayak-bench 23 and grasping a ring 38 each with his hands. He is pulling alternately said rings 38 towards himself and simultaneously lifts the properly adjusted part of the weight column 11 each by means of the ropes 39 fixed to the rings, in such a manner the
movement of the scull can be well imitated.
We described several possible applications
without aiming at completeness but it is quite obvious that by the combination of the moveable parts of the benches or by introducing new motions several useful solutions may be found for the conditioning dumb-bell machine. It goes without saying that the framework may differ from the pentagonal shape illustrated here, it may have a circular, a triangular or any polygonal shape differing from the said ones, simultaneously the devices connected may be also multiplied.
