Description

SPECIFICATION A device for holding cables, leads, hoses and similar articles The invention relates to a device for holding cables, leads, hoses and similar articles, with a hollow cylindrical assembly nipple to be threaded by a cable or the like, and with a pressure part for attachment to the assembly nipple to cause the cable or the like to be fixed by radial pressure in the assembly nipple.
A number of devices of this kind are known.
They serve, for example, for leading electrical cables or the like out of housings and fixing cables to the housings in order to relieve tension.
Conveniently, such devices also have a gasket which provides a liquid-tight seal around the cable or the like in the assembly nipple.
The relief of tension provided by such devices often means that a cable is kinked at the rear end of the pressure part, when cables are being laid or during the handling of appliances on which electrical leads are held by means of such devices.
A main object of the invention is to improve the construction of such devices, so that cables or the like are no longer kinked at the outlet point of the devices.
According to the invention there is provided a device for holding cables, leads, hoses or similar articles, comprising a hollow cylindrical assembly nipple to be threaded by a cable or the like, and a pressure part for attachment to the assembly nipple to cause the cable or the like to be fixed by radial pressure in the assembly nipple, the pressure part having at its rear end a hollow flexible extension piece which extends axially of the pressure part and whose length is a multiple of the length of the pressure part.
The extension piece may be non-detachably attached on to the rear end of the pressure part, for example, it may be slipped on to the pressure part and fastened thereto by engagement means.
The extension piece can be designed in various ways. For example, it can be tubular and made of material which is sufficiently stiff for the tube as a whole to bend under tensile stress on a cable or the like and thereby prevents the cable from kinking.
The tubular extension piece may be of relatively hard material, provided that slits which are opposite one another in pairs, are made in its shell, pairs of slits adjacent to one another having to be arranged offset by 900 to one another, and the slits associated with one another must be made to end at a relatively short distance from the axis of the extension piece.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the extension piece is in the form of a spiral. This can be a metal spiral which has one of its ends embedded into a plastic pressure part, which can be carried out in the injection mould during the injection-moulding of the pressure part.
It is especially advantageous that the spiralshaped extension piece should be a plastic moulding. The front end of this moulding can be fastened in a part, especially in the set screw of a cable screw-connection, for which purpose, after insertion into the respective part of the cable screw-connection, the front end must either be expanded thermally within this part or be provided with longitudinal slits, so that it is compressed radially for insertion into the part receiving it and, in its final inserted position, can spring open again and, in so doing, engage, for example, behind a chamfered face.
From the production angle it is advantageous that the pressure part and the spiral-shaped extension piece be formed as an integral plastic moulding.
The free end piece of the spiral-shaped extension piece is advantageously designed as a closed, especially cylindrical, ring, the inside diameter of which is slightly greater than the diameter of the cable or similar article to be led through the device.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:~ Fig. 1 is a longitudinal view partly in section of a device according to the invention which is installed in an orifice of a wall, Fig. 2 is a side view, illustrated partially in a longitudinal section, of an assembly nipple of the device of Figure 1, Fig. 3 is an end of view of the assembly nipple, seen in the direction of the arrow A of Figure 2, Fig. 4 is a side view, illustrated partially in a longitudinal section, of a pressure part of the device combined with an extension piece, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the pressure part, seen in the direction of the arrow B of Figure 4.
In Figure 1, 10 designates a housing wall whici is penetrated by a cylindrical orifice 12 through which an electrical cable 14 is led for installation purposes. The cable has to be fixed in relation to the housing wall 10. The device according to the invention, designated as a whole by 16, serves for this purpose and comprises two main components, an assembly nipple 18 and a pressure part 20.
The assembly nipple 18 is made of a tough anc elastic plastic, especially poiyamide (for example.
nylon VI) and has, on its side located on the left in Figure 1, an outer connecting thread 22 and an outer hexagonal supporting collar 24 which is necessary for assembly in the housing wall 1 0. Ar external thread 26 adjoins the supporting collar 24, and a cap-like set screw 28 of the pressure part 20 is screwed on to the thread 26.
As is shown in Figures 2 and 3, several clamping tongues 30 are integrally moulded coaxially at the right end face of the assembly nipple 18 and, extend up to the external thread 26, and are separated from one another by obliquely extending slits 32, Figure 3. The clamping tongues 30 and slits 32 alternate with each other and together form a bracing collar 34 in which a hollow cylindrical annular gasket 36 is inserted coaxially.
As Figure 2 shows, the assembly nipple 18 is undercut at 38, at the starting point of its clamping tongues 30. The annular gasket 36 engages positively in the undercut 38. As a result of this and by means of the clamping tongues 34, the annular gasket 36 is retained non-detachably in the assembly nipple.
Figures 4 and 5 show the set screw 28 in the form of a cap or a cap nut having a hexagonal collar 40 which assists assembly and an internal thread 42, by means of which the set screw is screwed on to the external thread 26 of the assembly nipple. The inner side of the set screw 28 facing away from the hexagonal collar 40 is made curved, or in the form of a truncated cone as illustrated, and interacts with the free ends of the clamping tongues 30, as will be described below.
Advantageously there is on the inner side of the set screw 28 a grooving or serration 44 which preferably extends obliquely to the axis of the set screw and which interacts with the ends of the clamping tongues 30 and prevents rotation between the assembly nipple 18 and the set screw 28.
As Figures 1 and 4 show, the set screw 28 has at its rear end a hollow flexible extension piece 46 which receives the cable within it. By means of this extension piece, the length of which is a multiple, for example four to five times the length of the set screw 28, kinking of the electrical cable or similar article led out from the rear end of the set screw is prevented.
In the embodiment illustrated, this extension piece is injection-moulded with the set screw 28 as an integral plastic moulding and is spiralshaped. At the free end this extension piece is formed as a closed, hollow, cylindrical ring 48.
The spiral-shaped extension piece tapers conically towards its rear end.
As shown in Figure 1, in the assembled state the supporting collar 24 of the assembly nipple 18 bears against the housing wall 10, and the assembly nipple is fixed in the wall by means of a lock nut 50 screwed on to the connecting thread 22.
When the set screw 28 is screwed onto the external thread 26 of the assembly nipple, the two parts 1 6, 1 8 are connected to one another in such a way that the clamping tongues 30 are supported on the sloping or curved inner side of the set screw forming a support bearing 52 and, when this set screw is attached, are gradually moved in the form of a fan towards the centre of the device.
As a result, the bracing collar 34 formed by the ends of the clamping tongues is applied peripherally against the cable 14 introduced into the device, and a relief of tension in the cable is achieved. At the same time, the hollow cylindrical gasket 36 which is attached on the inside nondetachably, is pressed against the cable and provides the desired seal around the cable.
Because of the fan-shaped arrangement of the clamping tongues 30 which partially overlap one another, there arises in the region of the grooving or serration 44 a frictional or positive abutment into which the individual clamping-tongue segments of the toothing engage. Thus, in the state shown in Figure 1 , the bracing collar 34 provides not only relief of tension, but also a protection against rotation of the set screw 28.
Sealing means can also be provided between the supporting collar 24 and the housing wall 10, in order to enable the device to be installed in the wall in a liquid-tight manner. This can be effected in various ways, for example, the face of the supporting collar resting against the wall 10 may have a sealing profile, or an annular gasket can be introduced between these parts.
The device according to the invention can have other constructions, in particular as regards the design of the assembly nipple and of the pressure part. The device described is characterised by special assembly and sealing properties which result from the combination of the set screw and the preferably spiral-shaped extension piece, with a result that the device according to the invention allows kink-free leading of cables or similar articles through orifices, while at the same time, the cable is relieved of tension and sealed into the orifice through which it passes.
