Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for carrying out premixing of the components used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam The present invention relates to apparatus for carrying out premixing of the components used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for carrying out premixing of the components used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam, comprising a fixed support structure, a tank for containing polyoil (polyol) supported by said structure, two electric motors carried by said structure and disposed with thin drive shafts extending vertically, said drive shafts being provided with pulleys or pinions engaging drive transmission belts or drives, one drive transmission being used to drive a first vertical shaft which extends through said tank and the other drive transmission being used to drive a second vertical shaft which is concentric with said first shaft and also extends through said tank, one shaft being used to drive means for moving material from the tank in a downward direction to a member located below the tank provided with means for introducing a catalyst component, and the other shaft being used to drive a mixing device for mixing the components, and means carried by the structure for receiving and discharging the mixed components.
The apparatus can obtain premixes with a high degree of homogeneity of the component product of polyurethane foam, generally polyoil (polyol) and catalyzers, whereby thorough stirring of the component products is attained and, consequently, the ideal premix thereof for the subsequent fabrication of blocks of the said foam.
Preferably the lower part of the tank is formed by an inverted frustoconical member whose smaller diameter end is connected to a cylindrical sleeve member of the same diameter.
Located within the cylindrical sleeve member is a worm provided on the lower end of the outer coaxial shaft and which constitutes said means for moving material from the tank in a downward direction.
In the lower end of said sleeve member is connected with a tapered duct provided with nozzles for introducing the catalyst component, the lower end of said tapered duct being connected to a cylindrical chamber in which is located a stirrer member provided on the lower end of the inner coaxial shaft and constituting said mixing device.
Preferably the stirrer member has a plurality of members which extend perpendicular to the inner coaxial shaft and extend inwardly therefrom which, when the inner shaft is rotated, carries out the premixing.
At the outlet end of the mixing means is a valve member which controls the discharge of the premixed material to a discharge duct movably mounted at one end in said structure and supported by a cable or the like which passes over a pulley carried by said structure.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus, partly in section; and Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view, showing partially in section the impeller and stirrer elements.
Referring initially to Figure 1, shown therein is a cylindrical tank 1 which contains the polyoil (polyol), a motor 2 having a pulley or pinion 3 which is engaged with a belt or chain 4 to drive a pinion or pulley 5 so as to rotate a tubular shaft 6 and a worm 7 provided at the lower extremity of the shaft 6 in order to impel the polyoil downwardly through a cylindrical sleeve 9, after it has passed through a frusto-conical portion 8.
Asecond motor 10, using similar transmission system, drives a pinion or pulley 11 so as to move a transmission belt or chain 12 which connects with a pinion or pulley 13, and drives an innner coaxial shaft 14 coupled to a stirrer 15 which carries out the premixing of the products.
The polyoil (polyol) impelled by the worm 7 through the cylinder9 is mixed with catalyzers supplied through nozzles 16 and the mixture flows through a tapered duct member 17 and passes into a premixing chamber 18 in which the stirrer 15 is housed.
When the said premixing has been effected in the manner indicated above, it is then ready for its subsequent use in the fabrication of the polyurethane foam, for which purpose it has to pass through a valve member 19 to a movable duct 20 where workable direction can be adjusted, the duct 20 being supported by a cable or the like guided by a pulley 21.
Referring to Figure 2, shown therein from top to bottom is a part of the outer coaxial shaft 6, part of the inverted frusto-conical portion 8 of the tank 1, the worm 7 which impels the polyoil, the cylindrical sleeve 9 through which the said product drops, later passing into the inverted tapered trunk duct member 17 wherein it is supplied with the catayzers flowing through the nozzles 16.
Referring to the sectional view of the impeller worm 7, shown therein is the inner coaxial shaft 14 provided with the corresponding bearings to ensure its proper functioning, the shaft 14 is formed integrally with the stirrer element 15 located in the cylindrical chamber 18 wherein the premixing takes place.
