Abstract

This machine is designed to plough the soil and to break up the surface by hand and foot operations and without engine power of any kind. Propulsion is obtained by a hand lever action which develops a forward motion and cultivates the soil by the attached ploughshare or trailing rake attachments. Its advantages are:- 1. It requires no fuel. 2. It cultivates large or small areas many times faster than a spade or fork. 3. It is more convenient than an engine driven machine for smaller gardens or allotments where intermittent use is required. 4. Can be operated without danger by hand, at a pace to suit the individual, including some partially handicapped persons. 5. Is conveniently stored or carried by hand, by wheelbarrow, or in the car. 6. Once purchased there are little or no maintenance costs. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION 'Swanway' handlfoot operated plough Manually operated only Construction - wood, metal, tube or bar, plate attachments.
Method - walking forward, using lever action with upward movements and reloading by downward movement to a new position approximately 1 yard forward by progressive movements, obtained by the 3 front grabs.
The proven prototype in use is constructed with a 2" x 2" sq. wooden handle to which is pivoted a 21/2" flat metal hinged beam to which is attached a metal keel-type blade cult and a plough blade contoured as a conventional plough in shape.
Foot pressure is applied over the blade cult or by a concrete or metal weight in the same position, allowing the operator to keep both feet on the soil.
Improvements intended are a disc cult and/or hoeing, raking attachments, and to be constructed from steel tube instead of wood and flat plate.
The hook and eye is for safety when carrying and to prevent injury to the legs or feet.
This tool is in use at the applicants residence which is a one acre site and is used in the strawberry beds and other areas.
A. The unique factor of this invention is the lever action I have employed and adopted so that the directional hand force applied at Point "A " immediately anchors Point "B"thus forcing Point "C" to enter the soil, whilst at the same time moving Point "C" in the direction of Arrow "C"towards Point "B".
Any weight applied at Point "W"gove. the depth of furrow of the fixed plough or attachments.
B. The main hinged lever frame can be constructed of steel tubing, wood, flat or square sectioned material to which the plough or other tools are attached, and incorporates a fulcrum hinge pin and bracket or staple, hinge in wood beams.
The grabs in both cases (see drawing) can be of metal or wood flat or round in section, toggled or fixed.
C. The implement uses no fuel, can be used by man woman (or youth), turns the soil many times faster than a fixed or spring loaded spade or fork.
Its dimensions are such that it can be carried by hand, fits into the boot of a car, strapped to a cycle and stored by hanging on a wall.
