Abstract

A shutoff valve comprises a rising valve stem (2) non-rotatably connected to a control handle (4) and screw threadedly located in the headpiece (1). The control handle (4) is connected in an axial direction, to the headpiece (1), which is screw threadedly locatable into a valve housing. To indicate the open position of the valve, the handle (4) has an axial opening or bore, through which the upper end (24) of the valve stem (2) passes and projects outwardly in the open position of the valve. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Shutoff Valve The present invention relates to a shutoff valve comprising a headpiece screw-threadable into a valve housing, a control handle, a rising valve stem non-rotatably connected to the control handle, a rising valve stem non-rotatably connected to the control handle and indicating means for indicating the open position of the valve.
Shutoff valves having a rising valve stem are known, for example in the form of shutoff slide valves or water valves. In such known valves, the control handle, which is fixedly connected to the stem, or alternatively a hand-wheel, rises with the axially displaceable stem. In order to indicate the open position of the valve, co-operating markings, are known. One marking is provided on the stem or on the control handle and the other marking is provided at any desired fixed location. In such cases, the displacement of one of these markings relative to the other indicates the open position of the valve.
The shutoff position of the valve is of particular importance. This is particularly true in the case of shutoff valves which are used for domestic purposes, such as in dishwashers or washing machines. With known shutoff valves, it is not possible to tell from the outside whether the valve is in its open or closed position. It would be highly desirable for this to be known so as to prevent damage occurring if, for example, one of the connecting hoses of the appliance fractures.
The present invention seeks to provide a shutoff valve suitable for insertion into the connection between water mains and a domestic appliance and in which either the open or closed position is so indicated on the shutoff valve as to be visible externally.
According to the present invention there is provided a shutoff valve comprising a headpiece screw-threadably fixable into a valve housing, a control handle, a rising valve stem non-rotatably connected to the control handle and means for indicating the open position of the valve wherein the handle is rotatably retained on the headpiece, the handle having a coaxial opening or aperture formed therein, one end of the valve stem passing through the opening or aperture and projecting outwardly therefrom, at least in the open position of the valve.
Preferably, the control handle carries on its underside, an inwardly extending collar, the collar being engaged in a grooe formed beneath an eccentrically disposed flange forming part of the headpiece.
In such a case, the valve stem may have a threaded portion which is screw-threaded into a corresponding threaded bore in the headpiece.
The valve stem is so dimensioned that, in the closed position of the valve, its outer, upper end lies substantially flush with the top of the control handle and, in the open position of the valve, this end of the valve stem protrudes visibly from the control handle. The upper end of the valve stem may be colour-coded such as by carrying a coloured marker ring.
In a shutoff valve according to the present invention, the open position of the valve is positively identified by the protruding end of the valve stem. Compared with conventional designs, this identification is achieved without necessitating any additional components. This is because, instead of two-part valve stems commonly used hitherto, a one-part, rising valve stem is used, the end of which passes through the control handle. Thus, the control handle is maintained in a non-rising manner which is desirable for domestic fittings.
One embodiment of the present invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the upper portion of a shutoff valve in accordance with the present invention in its closed position, Fig. 2 is a schematic view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the valve in its open position, and Fig. 3 is a section taken aiong the line I-I of Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1, the top portion of a shutoff valve in accordance with the present invention comprises a headpiece 1 which has a threaded connection portion 11 by means of which the valve may be screw-threadedly fitted into a valve housing (not shown). A rising valve stem 2 having a valve plate 21 formed on its lower end is disposed within the headpiece 1. A control handle 4, which is fixedly connected in an axial direction to the headpiece 1 is non-rotatably connected to the valve stem 2.
The control handle 4 is provided, at its lower end, with inwardly projecting collar 42. This collar 42 is first inserted onto an eccentrically disposed flange 13 and then into a groove 14 formed below the flange 13 in the headpiece 1. Into the other end of the headpiece 1, the valve stem 2 is screwed into a suitably threaded bore 12 formed in the headpiece 1. To permit this to be effected, the valve stem is provided with threaded portion 22.
The stem 2 has an upper outer end portion 24 which is connected to the main body of the valve stem 2 by a polygonal portion 23. A correspondingly shaped polygonal opening 41 is formed in the headpiece 1. The control handle 4 is centred thereby and is fixedly connected, in an axial direction, to the headpiece 1. The valve stem 2 and the headpiece 1 are non-rotatably connected by the polygonal portion 23 and the correspondingly dimensioned polygonal aperture 41.
The valve stem is so dimensioned that its upper outer end 24, when the valve is in its closed position, lies substantially flush with the upper surface of the control handle 4 but, in its open position, as shown in Fig. 2, protrudes visibly from the handle 4.
The end 24 of the valve stem 2 may be suitably marked to give visible indication as to whether the valve is open or closed. In the embodiment shown, a coloured marking ring 3 is located around the upper end 24 of the stem 2.
