Abstract

A moulded or fabricated member of plastic etc. material is shaped to fit snugly around the back of the neck of a user, gripping lightly on the neck on one side and dropping down the upper part of the chest on the opposite side with a forwardly projecting bracket and clamp attachment for supporting and holding in position a conventional umbrella over the head and shoulders of the user, without the use of the hands. The member is supported to the body by means of an adjustable strap passed beneath the armpit. A clamp attachment is automatically adjustable to any known thickness of umbrella stem or handle by exerting pressure on a small racheted lever locking at the point where the umbrella is securely held. The clamp can be tilted backwards or forwards by the release of a locking lever at the base of the forwardly projecting bracket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Umbrella to body support bracket The invention has been specially devised in order to provide a means of supporting a standard umbrella over the head and shoulders of a human body without the use of the hands to hold it in position.
According to the invention, a moulded form of PVC or similar material is shaped to fit snugly around the neck as a slim section, bent to grip halfway down one side of the neck and drop down the front of the upper part of the chest on the other side as a wider section lying flat to the body. To this wider flatter piece is attached a bracket protruding forward which terminates with an adjustable grip with a ratchet type, spring loaded catch hinged to close over the umbrella stem when it is placed within its jaws. The rear of the moulded form is widened at the point that drops over the back of the shoulder to give added support and form an anchor point for an adjustable strap attached between the aforementioned anchor point and the lower pa,t of the moulded section at the front. This strap holds the invention in a rigid comfortable position in readiness for the umbrella to be fitted. The jaws on the bracket can be pivoted forward or backwards to tilt the umbrella to varying angles over the head and shoulders to give greater protection according to weather conditions.
In orderthatthe invention and a practicable application thereof will be readily understood the same will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Drawing No. 1 Figure 1 is a front view of the moulded form shown before fitting to the body.
Drawing No. 1 Figure 2 is a side view of the moulded form shown before fitting to the body.
Drawing No. 1 Figure 3 is the adjustable strap which is afixed to the back of the moulded form and attaches to the front of this via the armpit as shown in Figure four.
Drawing No. 1 Figure 4 shows the invention positioned on the body with the support strap attached and the umbrella clamped into place. This shows the umbrella supported to the left of the head but it could also be manufactured to support on the right hand side according to ones own choice.
Drawing No. 1 Figure 5this shows the method of attaching the loose end of the strap to the front section of the invention. The pointed end of the strap attachment is aimed with the fingers at the hole at the base of the moulded form and pushed through the hole up to the point ot the bent neck. When this movement has been completed the attachment is released from the fingers and will remain in a fixed position intil reversal of the above procedure is carried out. The attachment is designed to act as a counterlever on the base of the moulded form pulling it close to the body.
Drawing No. 2 Figure 1 shows the detail of the forward projecting umbrella support bracket. The hinged section swings into the "U" shaped section and the spring loaded lever drops into each of the ratcheted slots locking at any desirable point. As the pressure is increased onto the umbrella stem by squeezing the protruding lever towards the body, the point is reached where the umbrella is firmly held and the lever is locked into the teeth of the ratchet by its spring loaded action, thus preventing the umbrella from moving from the pre-selected position.
Drawing No. 2 Figure 2 to unlock the umbrella from the grip of the jaws slight pressure is exerted with the thumb, onto the lever, pushing in a downward direction as shown in the diagram, making sure to hold the umbrella stem or handle with the other hand in readiness for its impending release.
1. A specially devised method of holding an umbrella of standard manufacture over the head and shoulders of the human body without the particular need for the use of the hands to hold the umbrella in position. A fabricated or moulded form shaped for maximum concealment behind a coat collar, lightly gripping around the back and side of the neck and dropping down onto the upper part of the chest at one side supporting a forward projecting bracket and clamp attachment at its lowest point. Strapping firmlytothe body with an adjustable strap attached back and front dropping beneath the armpits. All as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
2. A hinged clamp attachment as claimed in claim one, designed to adjust automatically to all known umbrella stem thicknesses gripping it by a sponge rubber padding and ratchet lever locking device by pressure exerted by the fingers on the aforementioned locking lever, release of the aforementioned is by a downward pressure of the fingers causing the lever to be pushed away from the ratchet teeth consequently enabling the umbrella to be removed.
3. An adjustable bracket as claimed in claim one tilting the umbrella fowards or backwards to positions most suitable for prevailing weather conditions. The bracket being locked or released as required by pressure from the finger on a self locking lever at the base of the bracket.
4. An adjustable strap as claimed in claim one attached at the rear of the moulded section of the invention by a hooked attachment and a specially devised front clip which when located by guiding with the fingers through the hole on the on the moulded form, acts as a leverage to pull the base of the invention tightly to the body. The strap is adjustable in length to comfortably run beneath the armpit giving adequate frontal or rear support.
5. A moulded or thermoformed form as claimed in claim one manufactured fabricated or moulded from plastic or a similar suitable material shaped and designed for maximum concealment behind the coat collar, lightly gripping the one side of the neck when positioned and dropping down the upper part of the chest on the opposite side, terminating above the armpits level at its bottom edge.
