Abstract
A child safety gate or garden gate structure comprises a holding frame 10 which is located in a doorway and a gate frame 12 which is hingeably mounted on the holding frame, both frames being width adjustable in order to accommodate different widths of doorway. The holding frame has two uprights 14, 16 which have extension pieces 20 at their lower ends and a doorstep 22 telescopically engages these pieces 20; the gate frame has horizontal upper and lower members 33 which telescopically carry bars 34 mounting latch bolts 36. The holding frame includes locking means 40. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Safety Gate
This invention relates to a gate especially but
not exclusively for preventing children leaving a
room or other enclosed area.
A disadvantage of known safety gates is that they are designed to locate in a standard width doorway, so that they will not suit a doorway of greater or smaller dimension than the standard width.
An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a gate structure comprising a holding frame for fixed location in a doorway and a gate frame for pivotal location on the holding frame, said holding frame including a pair of upright posts and a length-adjustable doorstep extending between said upright posts, said gate frame being hingeably mountable on one of said posts and having a width-adjustable latch means to engage locking means on the other of said posts.
Preferably, each upright post has a horizontal extension piece at its lower end which, when the post is located in a doorway, extends towards the other post, and a doorstep member telescopically engages said extension piece to form the lengthadjustable doorstep.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:~
Fig. 1 illustrates a gate according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded view thereof; and
Figs. 3 to 5 are details.
The gate comprises a U-shaped holding frame 10 which is located in a doorway and a gate frame 12 which is hingeably mounted on the holding frame.
The holding frame 10 has a pair of upright posts 14, 1 6 which are preferably of square section hollow steel tubing and which have brackets 18 by which the posts are connected to the upright faces of the doorway. The posts also have extension pieces 20 at their lower ends and these extend towards each other; finally, a doorstep member 22 telescopically engages the extension piece. Bolts 24 are provided to secure the extension pieces with the doorstep member in the desired length-adjusted position once the upright posts have been mounted in the doorway.
The gate frame 12 is rectangular and has vertical bars 30 at spaced intervals, such as 3E" (8.89 cm.). At one side of the frame 12 hinge sockets 32 are welded to the upper and lower frame members 33. These are provided to engage hinge pins 26 welded on the holding frame upright 16. In this way, the gate frame 12 is removably hingeable on the holding frame 10.
At the other end of the gate frame 12 the upper and lower frame members 33 which are hollow are open at that end to receive extension bars 34 telescopically therein, bolts 35 being provided to lock the bars in their desired positions. The bars 34 carry on their outer ends latch bolts 36 for engaging locking means 40 on the upright post 14. The extension bars 34 are interconnected by a vertical rod 37.
The locking means 40 includes a flat upright bar 42 having two inverted L-shaped openings 44 vertically spaced. The upper end of the bar 42 has a flat top 46 and the lower end has a flange 48.
The bar is located in the upright post 14, which is hollow and of square cross-section, and a spring 50 is located at the lower end of the post 14 and engaged by the flange 48. The post 14 has two slotted openings 52 in its side which coincide with the top of the openings 44 in bar 42 when the bar is depressed against spring 50; in this condition, the latch bolts 36 on the gate frame 12 can locate in the slots 44 and a release bar 42 rises so that the latch bolts 36 run into the upright parts of the slots 44, thus locking the gate.
In use, therefore, the holding frame can be located in any single-door doorway simply by adjusting the telescoped position of the doorstep member 22 relative to the post extension piece 20 and attaching the upright posts 14, 1 6 to the doorway uprights, e.g. screwing the brackets 18 thereto. The gate frame can then be lowered into position across the doorway, so that the gate sockets 32 engage the hinge pins 26 of the holding frame and then the gate can be locked by engaging the latch bolts 38 in the locking means 40.
A safety bracket 60 can be mounted on the upright post 16 to overlie the lower hinge socket 32 and prevent upward movement thereof, thus ensuring that the gate frame 12 cannot be removed from the hinge pins 26.
The gate structure is designed especially as a safety gate to prevent children leaving or entering a particular room, but it has other uses such as a garden gate.
When used as a child's safety gate it can block the doorway of playroom or the doorway to kitchens, thereby preventing children from danger of kitchen utensils and bathtubs, fire, etc. It has many advantages over known structures;
a) It is the only known safety gate using:~
1) frame and hinged-on gate
2) rod and spring as catch devices
3) special hooks and screws for immediate use.
b) It is extendable to suit different sized door frames by use of extendable 28" (71.12 cam)~ 32" (81.28 c,) - 36" (91.44 cm) arms as well as wider door frames.
c) It is easy to erect and use:~ 1) no carpenter or carpentry skills are required.
By using special hooks and screws provided
it can be used for varied sized door frames.
Therefore, immediate use after purchase.
2) the gate is easily opened by adults by
depressing the catch bar and it will
automatically lock on release. Therefore, old
and feeble persons who otherwise cannot
step over can operate with ease.
3) the gate is easily detachable from frame
when not in use without having to dismantle
the holding-frame from the door frame.
4) the gate can be adapted to odd-shaped door
frames by using 1 "x2"x30" wooden strips
etc. or suitable sizes.
Claims (4)
1. A gate structure comprising a holding frame for fixed location in a doorway and a gate frame for pivotal location on the holding frame, said holding frame including a pair of upright posts and a length-adjustable doorstep extending between said upright posts, said gate frame being hingeably mountable on one of said posts and having a width-adjustable latch means to engage locking means on the other of said posts.
2. A gate structure as claimed in claim 1, in which each upright post has a horizontal extension piece at its lower end which, when the post is located in a doorway, extends towards the other post, and a doorstep member telescopically engages said extension piece to form the lengthadjustable doorstep.
3. A gate structure as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the width adjustable latch means comprises bar means telescopically adjustable relative to the horizontal members of the gate frame and carrying latch bolts for engaging the locking means.
4. A gate structure substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
