Abstract

Coating bakers' and confectioners' goods.-In a confectionery coating machine the coating-material is applied to the bottoms of the cores in a whirling or churning condition produced by the different speeds of the core-carrying conveyer and the roller, disposed beneath the conveyer which applies the bottom coating, the upward pressure of the roller against the conveyer being greater than the weight of the conveyer and the cores thereon. Fig. 1 shows a machine of known type in which the coating-material is raised, by drums and scrapers, from a reservoir 1 to a discharge trough 6, the cores being carried through the coating-stream on a wire-work conveyer 7. The bottoming roller 8, which has a greater peripheral speed than the conveyer 7, is disposed slightly in advance of the coating-stream and is situated so that the conveyer slopes downwardly from the roller 8 to the roller 9. The roller 9 comprises a length of pinion wire which is prevented from sagging by projections 12, on a plate 13, which engage the plain portions 11 of the roller 9. The machine described above may ba used for applying a coating of thin consistency in which case a bottom coating of thicker consistency is applied by a bottoming-roller 17 which is similarly stressed upwardly against the conveyer 18. The material is raised from a jacketed reservoir 14, provided with a stirrer 15, by a roller 16 and applied to the roller 17. The conveyer 18 passes over rollers 20, 21 and a pinion roller 19 similar to the roller 9. A scraper 22 regulates the thickness of the applied coating. The cores are prevented from floating by a pivoted member 23 having a screw-adjusted weight 24a which regulates the pressure applied to the cores. The various parts of the machine are interconnected and driven by chains and chain-wheels and handoperated clutches 33, 42 are provided. An independent supply of coating-material may be applied to the bottoming-roller by a pump, and cleaning- scrapers may be provided.
