Description

SPECIFICATION Display stand for clothing The invention relates to display stands for clothing and is particularly but not exclusively concerned with stands of tubular construction including one or more horizontal top rails from which to suspend hangers each carrying a coat, jacket or suit for examination by prospective purchasers in a retail outlet.
Stands of the above kind are known and in wide use in stores and other shops and in general comprise two tubular top rails combined to form a cruciform structure for carrying four separate clothing displays.
According to the invention in its broadest sense, there is provided a display stand for clothing which stand comprises an elongate member disposed to bear articles of clothing on display and a support member which mounts said elongate member in an elevated position with at least a portion thereof extending radially from the mounting and rotatable about said mounting between at least first and second radially spaced and preferably fixed positions. The elongate member may take the form of a cross-bar mounted at or near its mid point to the support member. The support member may comprise two or more telescoped members, The invention in use enables a prospective purchaser to appraise displayed articles of clothing from two (or three or more) different positions relative to the clothing without having to aiter his own standing position.
Preferably, the first and second positions of the elongate member are disposed at right angles one to the other in the plane of rotation of the member so that articles of clothing carried by the member can be viewed from the front (or back) and from one side.
The elongate member may conveniently be provided with a mounting means including a member so configured as to be engageable in or otherwise with the supporting member in two or more different fixed positions.
For example, the supporting member may include a rectangular opening provided in an uppe axial extremity, a member of complementary rectangular cross-section being provided as part 0 the elongate member for receipt in said opening.
Conveniently, the stand will enable simultaneous front (or rear) view and side appraisal of articles of clothing. This may be achieved by means of a stand comprised of two support members each having mounted thereto a display rail with at least one of said rails being rotatable about its mounting between a first position which displays to a fixed appraiser of the articles essentially the same view of carried articles of clothing as the view displayed by the or one position of the other rail and a second position which displays the articles as if viewed from a position displaced by about 900 from the position of said appraiser.
It will be appreciated that three or more support member/rail pairs can be provided so as to enable three different views of carried articles (e.g. front, rear, side) to be obtainable simultaneously.
in a major embodiment of the invention, the stand comprises one or more display rails supported above floor level by one or more essentially upright support members, the stand including at least one support member having mounted thereto a display rail whose mounting is accomplished by mounting means which includes means defining an aperture of polygonal crosssection and a mount member receivable in and withdrawable from said aperture by manual elevation of the rail, said mount member being so configured as to prevent relative rotational movement of said rail and support member when received as aforesaid but enabling such movement to be accomplished manually when withdrawn from the aperture.
In a preferred construction of the stand as just described, the stand comprises floor-engaging base support means, two or more essentially upright supporting members extending from said support means, two or more display rails supported above the floor one each by each of said supporting members and a mounting provided for each rail to accomplish such support, at least one said mounting comprising means defining an aperture of polygonal cross-section and a member (mount member) receivable within and withdrawable from said aperture and so configured as to prevent relative rotation of said member and said aperture when so received.
The mount member in stands according to the above major embodiment (whether in the described preferred form or not) will conveniently form part of a larger member including a linkage portion which remains received in said aperture when the mount member is in its withdrawn position and which is of such form as to be rotatable within said aperture whereby relative rotational movement of the rail and support member can be accomplished manually whilst said linkage portion maintains said rail and support member in connection.
A preferred form of the major embodiment of the invention (whether of the preferred construction described above or not and having a mount member as just described or not) is a stand in which a rail is provided with a mounting lug.
received in a rectangular or other polygonal aperture of a support member so that with the support member essentially upright the rail is disposed in a generally horizontal orientation, the lug including a first portion adjacent the rail and of a complementary cross-section with respect to the aperture so as to be receivable and engageable therein against rotational movement and a second portion which is further removed from the rail and of such form as to be freely rotatable in the aperture of the support member, the rail being moveable upwardly by manual means between a first position in which the first lug portion is received and engaged as aforesaid and a second position in which the second lug portion only is received in the aperture of the support member.
The following is a description, by way of example only, of one particular embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a display stand having a pair of display rails; Figure 2 shows a display stand of similar construction but having one display rail only; Figure 3 shows on an enlarged scale the region XofFigure 1; Figure 4 shows on an enlarged scale the region Y of Figure 3 with the outermost tube removed; and Figure 5 shows on an enlarged scale the region Z of Figure 1, viewed from the rear.
The stand shown in Figures 1 and 3-5 of the drawings is of metallic tubular construction and comprises tubular uprights 10 connected near their bases by bracing frame 11 formed from horizontal tubular braces 1 2 and upright brace sections 13.- Perpendicular to and in the same plane as lower brace 12 are base members 14 and 1 5 also of tubular construction. All the above mentioned tubular parts are of hollow square cross-sectioned chromium-plated steel with an external width of 30mm and a gauge thickness of 2mm. Six feet 1 6, of which two only are shown in Figure 1, are provided on the base members 14 and 1 5 for floor engagement.
Received telescopically within uprights 10 are chromium plated tubular steel T-bars 1 9, each comprised of oval cross-sectioned tubular rails 25, external tube 20 and internal tube 21 (serving as a lug). Rail 25 height adjustment can be accomplished by telescopic movement of the tubes 20 of T-bars 1 9 relative to uprights 10.
Clamps 1 7 and 1 8 are provided to enable fixture of the T-bars 1 9 at a desired height.
Tube 20 is a square cross-sectioned tube having an external width of 25mm and a gauge thickness of 2.5mm (and therefore a nominal inside diameter of 20mm). Received within tubes 20 are tubes 21 having a generally circular crosssection and an external diameter of 20mm so as to provide a close fit within tubes 20 where tubes 20 and 21 are in contact. An upper extremity 22 of each tube 21 is of square cross-section with an external width of 20mm, so as to be snugly receivable in the opening at the upper extremity of rectangular cross-sectioned tube 20.
Tube 21 is secured at its square cross sectioned portion 22 to a square cross-sectioned member 23 so sized as to seat upon the top of tube 20 when portion 22 of tube 21 is fully received in tube 20. The member 23 is made of chromium plated steel and is welded to tubular rails 25 at welds 26.
As best seen from Figure 4, in one fixed position of rail 25, the inner tube 21 of T-bar 1 9 is fully received in outer tube 20 with square cross sectioned portion 22 locked to prevent rotation. In this condition, member 23 is seated atop tube 20.
To move rail 25 to an alternative position, lifting effort can be applied manually to rail 25 until portion 22 of tube 21 is withdrawn from rectangular cross-sectioned tube 20 so as to allow rotation of circular cross-sectioned tube 21 within tube 20. The rail 25 can then be rotated freely, with lifting effort relaced, until the rectangular cross-sectioned portion 22 registers with tube 20 at a position 900 removed from the original position. The portion 22 then enters tube 20, until member 23 seats atop tube 20, and locks the rail 25 in a second display position in which its axis is perpendicular to that of the rail in its original position.
When lifting rail 25 to enable the rotation of tube 21 within tube 20, it is necessary to lift only so far as necessary to remove portion 22 from its original locked position. However, excessive lifting will not normally detach the rail from the stand since tube 21 is of substantial length and will remain within tube 20 during all but grossly exaggerated use of the stand.
The dimensions of the various components of the stand may vary according to intended use.
Exemplified dimensions are shown in the drawings in faint script (mm units).
The display stand shown in Figure 2 is of similar construction but has one display rail only and therefore one upright 10. The parts of the T-bar 19 are of construction, dimension and arrangement identical to T-bar 1 9 of the stand shown in Figures 1 and 3 to 5 and upright 10 is of identical construction, dimension and arrangement to the uprights 10 of the stand shown in those figures.
The upright 10 of the stand shown in Figure 2 is mounted upon a floor support structure 26 having a cruciform configuration comprised of four L-shaped support members 27 having arms 28 which are mutually perpendicular and upright sections 29 secured by bolts in butting relationship to the upright 10. Four floor engaging feet 30 are provided on the underside of the support arms 28.
The floor support structure 26 is made of tubular steel components of the same kind as those used for the tubular members of the stand shown in Figure 1 and 3 to 5.
