Abstract

An electric connector (1) comprises two separately formed parts (2, 3) each having a body (4, 5) of substantially rigid electrically insulating material. The body (4) of one part (2) has a circumferentially extending step (14) and the body (5) of the other part (3) has a complementary continuous or discontinuous circumferentially extending rib (11), one body (4) having a circumferentially extending groove (9) within which is housed a separately formed sealing ring (10) of elastomeric material. The arrangement is such that when a plug and socket connection between the two parts (2, 3) is effected the rib (11) makes a snap fit behind the step (14) to lock the two parts together and the sealing ring (10) effects a substantially water-tight seal between the two parts. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electric Connector This invention relates-to an electric connector and is particularly concerned with an electric connector of the kind comprising two separately formed parts which can be detachably mated together.
According to the present invention, an improved electric connector comprises two separately formed parts, each comprising a body of substantially rigid electrically insulating material which houses one or more than one electric contact, the bodies of said two parts being adapted to make a plug and socket connection with one another to effect an electrical connection between aligned contacts of said two parts, wherein the body of one of said two parts has a circumferentially extending step and the body of the other of said two parts has a complementary continuous or discontinuous circumferentially extending rib, and wherein the body of one of said two parts has a circumferentially extending groove within which is housed a separately formed sealing ring of elastomeric material, the arrangement being such that when the plug and socket connection between said two parts is effected, the rib makes a snap fit behind said step to lock the two parts together and the sealing ring effects a substantially water-tight seal between the two parts.
Preferably, the circumferentially extending step is in the outer surface of the body of one of said two parts constituting the plug, and the continuous or discontinuous circumferentially extending rib is on the inner surface of the body constituting the socket.
The circumferentially extending step and the circumferential groove are preferably in the same body. Preferably, also in this case, the step is a boundary wall of the groove.
The bodies are preferably of circular crosssection and the sealing ring is preferably an O-ring seal. In this case, preferably the body of one of the two parts includes at least one longitudinally extending rib which slides into a longitudinally extendinggroove in the body of the other part when the two parts are mated, to ensure correct alignment of the contacts.
The invention is further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of the preferred electric connector; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the connector in Figure 1 with the contact omitted; and Figures 3, 4 and 5 are partial cross-sectional views of alternative arrangements to that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the electric connector 1 comprises two parts 2, 3, each part comprising a body 4, 5 of rigid electrically insulating material housing electric contacts 6. The plug and socket connection between the two parts 2, 3 is effected by sliding a plug portion 7 of one part 2 inside a socket portion 8 of the other part 3.
Portion 7 has a circumferentially extending groove 9 in its outer surface within is housed an O-ring seal 10. Portion 8 has a discontinuous circumferentially extending rib 11 on its inner surface. When the two parts 2, 3 are fitted one within the other, the rib 11 effects a snap fit behind a boundary wall 14 of the groove 9 and at the same time O-ring 10 forms a water-tight seal between the two parts 2, 3.
A longitudinally extending rib 12 in portion 8 slides into a longitudinally extending groove 13 in portion 7 when the two parts 2, 3 are fitted together to ensure correct alignment of the two parts 2, 3.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 show alternative arrangements for positioning the step, the rib, and the O-ring seal for connectors in accordance with the invention.
