Abstract
A curtain suspended by runners on a rail, for closing a loading aperture in a side of a vehicle incorporates a flexible electrical conductor extending along a meandering path covering a major part of the surface of the curtain between the two ends of the curtain and at the or each movable end of the curtain the cable is connected by a jack and socket into a circuit of an alarm system. Cutting of one of the conductors will trigger the alarm by causing an open circuit while connecting two of them during a cutting operation will trigger the alarm by closing a normally-open circuit.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Security curtain
The present invention relates to curtains of the kind suspended from a rail, for example on runners, for closing an aperture for example a loading aperture in a side of a vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided an alarm system and a curtain for closing an opening leading into an area to be protected by the alarm system, wherein the curtain incorporates a flexible electrical conductor extending between the two ends of the curtain and at the or each movable end of the curtain the conductor is connected into a circuit of the alarm system through a separa ble connection. Advantageously, the flexible conductor extends along a meandering path covering a major part of the surface of the curtain.
Preferably, there are three such conductors, insulated from each other, and forming a cable, the arrangement of the alarm circuit and cable being such that cutting of one of the conductors will trigger the alarm by causing an open circuit while connecting two of them during a cutting operation will trigger the alarm by closing a normally-open circuit.
With this arrangement, the seperable connection may comprise a conventional jack and socket connection, the socket being mounted on a frame around the opening to be closed by the curtain, the body ring and tip of the jack being connected to the three conductors.
The socket is preferably of the automatic switching type such that removal of the jack plug opens or closes the circuit which will trigger the alarm unless the alarm has been switched off by a key holder.
The conductor or conductors are preferably mounted on the side of the curtain facing into the space to be protected, being preferably in a sleeve or pocket which may be formed by securing a strip or strips of the same material as the curtain to it along the two edges of the strip or strips. The invention is particularly applicable to goods carrying vehicles of the curtain-sided type.
Clearly, a plurality of conductors can be arranged to run across the curtain, being connected in series or parallel depending on whether the particular alarm circuit is to respond to opening of a normally closed circuit or closing of a normally open circuit.
1. Apparatus comprising a curtain for closing an opening leading into an area to be protected by an alarm system, wherein the curtain incorporates a flexible electrical conductor extending between the two ends of the curtain and at the or each movable end of the curtain the conductor is connected into a circuit of the alarm system through a separable connection.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the flexible conductor extends along a meandering path covering a major part of the surface of the curtain.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2 and including three such conductors, insulated from each other, and forming a cable, the arrangement of the alarm circuit and cable being such that cutting of one of the conductors will trigger the alarm by causing an open circuit while connecting two of them during a cutting operation will trigger the alarm by closing a normally-open circuit.
4. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the separable connection comprises a conventional jack and socket connection, the socket being mounted on a frame around the opening to be closed by the curtain, the body ring and tip of the jack being connected to the three conductors.
5. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the socket is of the automatic switching type such that removal of the jack plug opens or closes the circuit which will trigger the alarm unless the alarm has been switched off by a key holder.
6. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the conductor or conductors are mounted on the side of the curtain facing into the space to be protected.
7. A goods-carrying vehicle incorporating apparatus according to any of the preceding claims.

Claims (7)
