Abstract

Equipment for playing a game resembling chess comprises a chess board having recesses (11) for locating and preventing dislodgement of playing cubes (4), the six faces of each cube having respectively thereon representations of a pawn, a bishop (6), a knight, a castle (8), a queen (9) and a king. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A game of chess This invention relates to the game of chess, and constitutes an original playing board and pieces which offer new attractions when playing the game.
iWasically the main characteristics of the chess game equipment of the invention are that the squares of the board each have a rectangular recess parallel with the periphery of each square, in which recesses chessmen can be placed and retained, and that each of the chess pieces is a cube on the six faces of which there are represented six different chessmen, that is to say the pawn, the bishop, the knight, the castle, the queen and the king.
This new chess game equipment has two advantages when compared with conventional chess equipment.
a) Firstly, since the squares each have a recess, the pieces or chessmen cannot be dislodged from their square as a result of unintentional shocks which they may receive in the course of a game.
b) Secondly, the game itself can be converted into a game of chance, since the player who should move the piece, certain rules having been established before starting the game, throws the piece and he can change the piece. Thus, the game can be played by two chess players of different ability, since the skill of the player does not play an important role when the game is converted into a game of chance.
To complement the description which follows and for a better understanding of the characteristics of the invention, a set of drawings accompanies this specification. In these drawings: Figure 1 represents a portion of the chessboard of the invention, illustrating how each square has a quadrangular periphery and which corresponds to the respective recess in which chessmen can be positioned.
Figure 2 is a sectional view along line ll-ll of Figure 1, illustrating the recesses of each square and a cube, constituting one of the chessmen, positioned in one of the squares.
Figure 3 is an unfolded view of the cube or playing piece of the chess game, each face of which illus trades the drawing of the respective figures comprising the various pieces of the game.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the cube, of which the unfolded view is represented in Figure 3.
The main parts and elements of the equipment of the present invention have been numerically referenced in the drawings, and comprise a board 1 with white squares 2 and black squares 3, and cubes 4.
The cubes 4 each have a face 5 representing a pawn, a face 6 representing a bishop, a face 7 representing a knight, a face 8 representing a castle, a face 9 representing the queen, and a face 10 representing the king.
Further each of the squares 2 and 3 of the board has a recess 11 into and by which the cubes 4 can be placed and retained against accidental dislodgement.
As with the traditional game of chess the cubes are in two colours, and there are thus 16 white cubes and 16 black cubes, all of them identical, and corresponding to the pieces of a normal chess game, that is there will be 8 cubes with a face bearing the figure of a pawn 5 upwards in the case of the white cubes, just as in the case of the black dice. Likewise, there will be 2 cubes with the face bearing the knight 7 upwards, 2 cubes with the face of the castle 8 upwards, 2 cubes with the face of the bishop 6 upwards and cubes with the face of the king 10 and with that of the queen 9 upwards, all of them placed initially in their traditional squares, both for the white and for the black cubes.
Thus, each determined piece will always be known, the position it occupies, and to which figure it corresponds, since it is represented on the upper face of the cubes 4, whereby the game can be played in the same manner as with conventional or normal chessmen.
On the other hand, since each piece is a cube, determined rules can be established between the players, to thus convert a pawn, for example, into a bishop or into a queen, for example, or any other combination since, as mentioned, if certain rules are established a priori, the cubes can be thrown or moved at random and if, for example, it is a bishop, the same can be converted into another piece having a higher value (castle, queen), when the mentioned cube is thrown, wherefore in this case the knowledge of the player hardly intervenes, since the most important feature is chance and, therefore, players having a different knowledge of the game can take parttherein. In other words, the game will be converted in this case into a game of chance in its major part, although later on, when one piece or the other is moved, the knowledge of each player will intervene.
