Description

SPECIFICATION Roof structures This invention relates to roof structures and in particular to means for supporting the roof cladding and insulating layers.
The invention is primarily concerned with roof structures in which a covering comprising an inner lining, an insulating layer and external cladding, which are superimposed upon one another, are supported on a structural framwork of beams or purlins. Hitherto the covering has rested upon the upper surface of the beams or purlins and in order to obtain a roof of acceptable firmness, it has been necessary to restrict the thickness of the insulating layer that can be used.
The present invention provides a system by means of which the insulating layer can be supported at a level below the upper surface of the beams of purlins and also provide a rigid support for the external cladding, so that the latter may be firmly secured without compressing the insulating layer to an undesirable degree.
According to one aspect the present invention provides a roof structure having a covering comprising an inner lining, an insulating intermediate layer and an external cladding which are superimposed upon one another and are supported on a structural framework of beams or purlins, a channel section support element being located over each of the beams or purlins longitudinally thereof, each of said support elements comprising a web portion which acts as a support for the external cladding and a pair of wall portions, said wall portions defining a pair of co-planar outwardly directed marginal flange portions which depend below the upper surface of the beam or purlin and form a support for the internal lining and roof insulating layers, a pair of intermediate bearing surfaces positioned above the plane of the flanges and inwardly thereof which abut the upper surface of the beam or purlin, and central spacing portion above the upper surface of the beam or purlin.
According to a further aspect of the present invention a support element for an insulated roof structure, of the form defined hereinbefore, comprises a channel section having a web portion and a pair of wall portions, said wall portions defining a pair of co-planar outwardly directed marginal flange portions, a pair of bearing surfaces positioned intermediate of the plane of the flange portions and the web portion and inwardly of the flange portions and a central spacing portion on the opposite side of the bearing surfaces from the flange portions.
In use the support element is positioned on top of a structural beam or purlin, so that its bearing surfaces engage the upper surface of the beam or purlin and its flange portions extend outwardly on either side of the beam or purlin, at a level below its upper surface. In this manner internal lining boards may be laid between the beam or purlins, supported along opposite edges by the flange portions of the support elements. Sheets of insulation may be laid upon the internal lining boards. The space above the beams or purlins and between adjacent sheets of insulation, will then be filled by the central portion of the support element and the upper surface of this central spacing portion will form a support for the external cladding of the roof.A relatively thin layer of insulating material may be positioned between the web portion which forms the upper surface of the central portion of the support element and the outer cladding in order to avoid a cold spot at this point.
The support element according to the present invention may be secured to a beam or purlin by a suitable fastening means, for example the support element may be secured by means of screws, rivets or similar fastening means which pass through the wall portions of the support element between the flange portions and the bearing surfaces and into or through the adjacent portions of the beams or purlins. Alternatively the support elements may be clipped on to the beams or purlins and inter-engaging formations, for example ribs and grooves, may be provided for this purpose.Where the support elements are mechanically secured to the beams or purlins, the external cladding may be secured to the support elements by suitable means, but where the support elements are merely clipped to the beams or purlins, the external cladding must be secured to the beams or purlins thereby clamping the support elements in position.
One embodiment of the invention is now described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 shows a perspective view of a support element in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 shows a part sectional view of a roof structure incorporating the support element illustrated in Figure 1.
As shown in Figure 1 , the support element 10 comprises a cold rolled metal channel section having a double rectangular cross-section. The closed end of the channel section, which forms the central spacer portion 11 of the support element 10 is narrower than the open end of the channel section, so that longitudinal shoulder portions are provided, these shoulder portions acting as bearing surfaces 12 for the support element 10.
The longitudinal edges of the channel section are provided with co-planar outwardly directed flanges 13.
Longitudinal ribs 14 are provided in the wall portions 1 5 between the bearing surfaces 12 and the flange portions 1 3 The end surface 1 6 of the spacer portion 11 is recessed so that a pair of longitudinal ridge portions 17 are formed along each edge of the surface 16.
As illustrated in Figure 2 a roof support structure is formed from a plurality of parallel Z-purlins 21 which are supported on a suitable structure (not shown). A support element 10, as described above is placed over the upper surface 20 of each of the purlins 21, so that the bearing surfaces 12, engage the upper surface of the top flange 21. The ribs 14 on the support element engage, on one side, the longitudinal edge of the lip 23 of the purlin 21 and, on the other side, a corresponding longitudinal groove 24 in the web portion 25 of the purlin 21 in order to provide a positive location of the support element 10 on the purlin 21, during construction of the roof. Internal lining boards 26 are placed between the purlins 21 so that they are supported at opposite edges by the flange portions 13 of adjacent support elements 10.Sheets 27 of insulating material are then placed upon the upper surface of the internal lining boards 26 so that they project above the level of the upper flange 22 of the purlin 21. The space above the purlins 21 and between adjacent sheets of insulation 27 is filled by the spacer portion 11 of the support element 10. A thin strip of insulating material 28 is placed along the recessed upper surface 16 of the spacer portion 11 and the outer cladding 29 of the roof is supported upon the ridge portion 1 7 of the upper surface 1 6 of the support element 10. The outer cladding 29 of the roof is secured by suitable means (not shown) to the purlin 21, thereby clamping the support elements 10 to the purlins 21. One suitable method of securing the outer cladding 29 to the purlins 21 would be to use selfdrilling screws which pass through the spacer portion 11 of the support element 10 into the upper flange 22 of the purlin 21. An alternative method would be to provide apertures in one of the web portions 15 of the support element 11 so that "J" bolts engaging the lip 23 of the purlin 21, may be used to secure the outer cladding 29 to the purlin 21 in a conventional manner.
