Abstract

In an electric power cable installation in which the cables 1 are installed in the air or a gas in a horizontal or only moderately inclined position, convective cooling is improved by providing walls 2 spaced one on each side of the cable or cables so as to form a draught space. The walls are plastics or aluminium hyperbolic sheets. Telecommunication cables present in the installation are located below the power cables. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electric power cable installations This invention relates to electric power cable installations in which at least one power cable is installed in the air (or another gas), whether in the open atmosphere or in a building, tunnel or other enclosed air space.
The object of the invention is to increase the effectiveness of convective cooling and thereby increase the amount of power that can be safely transmitted through the cable.
In accordance with the invention, an electric power cable installation includes at least one cable installed in the air in a horizontal or moderately inclined position and a pair of wall members spaced one on each side of the cable or cables so as to form a draught space containing the cable or cables and open above and below.
In this way the heat dissipated by the cables produces an updraught in the draught space by the chimney effect leading to greater convective heat loss than in open airspace.
Normally the wall members will be imperforate or nearly so; they may for example be of thin sheet metal or of stiff plastics sheet material. Normally they will be spaced from the cable or cables and extend continuously, or nearly so, from end to end of the installation.
Preferably the wall members are shaped to provide a waisted shape for the draught space; a hyperbolic curve is considered ideal as providing a considerable Venturi effect.
When there is more than one cable, they are preferably supported one above the other in a vertical array; a preferred form of support is described in the specifications of our Patents Nos.
1580213 and 1580214. When the installation includes communication, signalling or control cables, they are preferably arranged below the power cables to minimise heating from them.
The accompanying drawing is an isometric sketch of a portion of a power cable installation in accordance with the invention.
A number of power cables 1 are arranged vertically one above the other on suitable supports (not shown) such as those described in the specification of Patent No. 1580213. A pair of wall members 2 formed from aluminium sheet curved to form a hyperbolic passage-way between them complete the installation.
1. An electric power cable installation including at least one cable installed in the air in a horizontal or moderately inclined position and a pair of wall members spaced one on each side of the cable or cables so as to form a draught space containing the cable or cables and open above and below.
2. An installation as claimed in Claim 1 in which the wall members are imperforate.
3. An installation as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the wall members are of thin sheet metal.
4. An installation as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim: in which the wall members are of stiff plastics sheet material.
5. An installation as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the wall members are spaced to provide a waisted shape for the draught space.
6. An installation as claimed in Claim 6 in which the draught space is hyperbolic.
7. An electric power cable installation substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
