Description

SPECIFICATION An air sample collection device This invention relates to an air sample collection device, which can be carried by a user.
Many industrial processes use organic solvents which produce solvent vapours which contaminate the air and which may be dangerous and a health risk for personnel. According to the German regulations, the MAK-values (threshold limit values) must not be exceeded. They must therefore be monitored.
Sampling devices carried on the person ensure that average values are ascertained over required periods of time.
German Offen legu ngsschrift 2736975 discloses as a known dosimeterwhich is carried on the person for determining the quantitative measurement of the exposure of the user to toxic organic vapours and which has a dosimeter casing with a shallow indentation. The particulate absorption material contained therein is covered externally by a permeable membrane. The membrane in turn is covered by a covering plate with a central opening with a grid fixed over this. The dosimeter casing has one opening, which may be closed by a stopper, for admitting and discharging the absorption material and through which the adsorption material is removed after exposure for testing. On the rear of the dosimeter casing there is a clasp attached by means of a screw, by means of which the dosimeter can be fixed to parts of the clothing. It is a disadvantage that there are no seals which could exclude any absorption outside the provided exposure time and thus avoid falsification of the measurement results. The design consisting of several separate parts is uneconomical.
There is no facility for making notes about the data from the completed exposure on the dosimeter and there are also no handling aids outside the exposure time.
What is required is an air sample collection device which can be carried on the person and which is as economical as possible and may be put to a variety of uses.
According to the present invention there is provided an air sample collection device, which can be carried by a user, and which comprises a body defining one or more compartment for a adsorbent and/or absorbent means with one or more opening for each compartment, a closure member for each opening which is connected to the body by an elongate portion, and a clasp, wherein the body, the closure member(s), the elongate portion(s) and the clasp are integral with one another.
Preferably, the body, the closure member(s), the elongate portion(s) and the clasp comprise an injection-moulded component formed from a plastics material.
The body can comprise an open-ended cylinder, and a closure member can be provided for the opening at each end of the cylinder.
The interior of the open-ended cylinder is preferably divided by partitions into two or more compartments.
The partitions preferably extend axially along the open-ended cylinder.
The air sample collection device can include surfaces for writing or other markings.
Advantageously, opposite walls of the body are formed as complementary parts of a plug and socket connection, to enable two or more air sample collection devices to be connected together. The plug and socket connection can comprise a rib of dove-tail cross-section formed on one wall and a groove with a complementary dove-tail cross-section in an opposite wall.
By forming the body and other components by injection moulding, the air sample collection device can be made compact. The absorption means merely have to be added in the usual way. The closure members which are integral with the body are a simple means of allowing the absorption material to be exposed to the ambient air only during thetime that the air sample is being taken. The sealing stoppers are ready again in all cases for prompt sealing.
The moulded-on carrying clasp allows the device to be fixed easily and securely to the clothing of the person using the device.
Having the filling in several compartments enables different contaminants in the ambient air to be monitored simultaneously.
The writing surfaces can be used for noting information, such as, date, name, place, necessary for the monitoring.
The plug and socket connection, such as for example the dove-tail connection, enables several sample collectors to be fitted together, making dispatch easier for the manufacturer to the user and then on to the analysis laboratory. Also, when the devices are fitted together it is easier to document group measurements.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section through the air sample collection device; Figure 2 shows the air sample collection device of Figure 1 when closed by closure members; Figure 3 shows a writing side of the air sample collection device of Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 4 shows a view along the axis of an embodiment of the air sample collection device.
The air sample collection device comprises a tube or open-ended cylinder 1, containing an adsorption material 2. The adsorption material 2 is retained by holding elements 3. The tube 1 is formed of an injection moulded part made from a plastics material and is integral with a closure member 6 for each of openings 4 at either end of the tube 1. The closure members 6 are connected to the tube 1 by elongate flexible portions 5. A carrying clasp 7 is also moulded with the tube 1 in a single piece, and serves for attaching the air sample collection device to a lapel for example.
The closure members 6 enable the openings 4 to be kept closed in a gas tight manner until and then after the time for exposure of the adsorption material 2. The tube 1 may be divided axially by intermedi ate walls or partitions 8 into several filling compartments 9 so that different adsorption means 10, 11, 12 may be added for absorbing different noxi oussubstances from the air.
A side wall 13 is provided with writing surfaces 14 for the documentation of the measurement (see Figure 3).
As shown in Figure 4, a rib. 15 of dove-tail crosssection can be provided on one wall of the tube 1, and a groove 16 with a complementary dove-tail cross-section can be provided in an opposite wall.
This enables several air sample collection devices to be connected together.
