Abstract

A display system comprises at least one support post 10 having at least one elongate track 11 which has a cross-section which reduces towards the mouth of the track; and a support bracket 13 which is adjustably securable at any desired position along the length of the track by means of a releasable locking device comprising a locking member 20 slidably received in a recess 17 in the bracket, the member having an enlarged projecting head 22 which engages in the track 11, and a control member which is operable to pull the locking member into the recess in the bracket and thereby tighten the bracket to the post 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Display systems The invention relates to display systems and to support brackets therefor.
The invention provides a display system comprising at least one support post, an elongate track in the support post, the track having a cross section which reduces towards the mouth of the track, and a support bracket adjustably securable at any desired position along the length of the track, the bracket having a releasable locking device comprising a locking member slidably received in a recess in the bracket, the member having an enlarged projecting head which engages in the track, and a control member operable to pull the locking member into the recess in the bracket, the arrangement being such that when the control member is in an inoperative position the head is loose in the track and the bracket can be slid along the track to any desired position, but when the control member is operated to pull the locking member into the recess, the head of the locking member engages with the reduced cross section mouth of the track, pulling the bracket and support post into abutment and hence locking the bracket in position.
The control member may comprise a bolt or other threaded securing member which passes through a hole in the bracket and engages in a screw-threaded hole in the locking member.
The track and the head of the locking member may be of dovetail cross section.
Preferably the post, bracket, locking member and connecting member are of wood.
The post may have more than one track. The post may for example be generally square in cross section, there being a track along each face.
The corners of the post may be chamfered or otherwise ornamentally shaped.
The invention includes a display system comprising a plurality of posts and brackets arranged to support display units such as shelves, cupboards and the like.
By way of example, a specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a post and bracket of an embodiment of display system according to the invention, partly in section; Figure 2 is a sectional plan view of the post and bracket shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating how a plurality of the posts and brackets shown in Figures 1 and 2 may be used for display purposes.
The post shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises an elongate upright member 10 manufactured from hardwood. The member is generally square in cross section but a dovetail groove 11 has been machined along each face of the post and each corner has a decorative concave chamfer 12.
The bracket 1 3 is generally L-shaped, there being a horizontally extending portion 14 having a flat support surface 1 5, the portion 14 being integral with a downwardly extending portion 1 6.
The portion 16 has a rectangular recess 17 therein. A plain bore 1 8 extends from the recess 17 and terminates in a shorter counterbore 19 formed in the opposite face of the portion 1 6 from the recess 17. The bracket 1 3 is formed from the same hardwood as the post 10.
Slidably fitted within the recess 1 7 is a locking member 20. As can be seen from Figure 2, the locking member has a rectanguiar cross section portion 21 which fits into the recess 17, and a projecting head 22 which is enlarged by means of having a dovetail cross section.
A locking member in the form of a wooden bolt 23 is passed into the bore 18 and screwed into a screw-threaded bore in the locking member 21.
To mount the bracket on a post the bolt 23 is unscrewed slightly so that the locking member is loose in the recess 17, and the enlarged head 22 is slid longitudinaily into one of the dovetail grooves 11. The bracket can be slid along the post to any desired location, and the bracket can then be locked in position by the simple expedient of tightening the bolt 23. The locking member 21 cannot rotate within the recess 17 and so tightening of the bolt 23 draws the locking member 21 further into the recess 1 7. This causes the sloping faces of the dovetail-shaped head 22 to come into engagement with the sloping faces of the dovetail groove 11 and pulls the post and bracket toward one another. The bolt is tightened until the bracket and post firmly abut one another at the points indicated by arrows 24 in Figure 2 whereupon friction between the timber parts will ensure than the bracket remains firmly in position until the bolt 23 is loosened again.
The locking member 20 and bolt 23 are also made of hardwood.
Posts and brackets according to the above embodiment provide a very attractive display system which may be used to support display items such as shelves 25, as shown in Figure 3.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment. For instance the brackets may be used to support other items, such as cupboards, and the brackets may be attached to, or integral with, shelves, cupboard and other display items.
It is not essential for the items to be made of timber, and the bolt 23 and locking member 20 may for example be made of die cast alloy or plastics material but it is preferred that at least the post 11 and bracket 13 are of timber.
