Abstract

A hookes universal joint with needle roller bearing assemblies in which the rollers have tapered end portions 23 and the bearing cups 10 have undercut grooves 16 at the junction between their side and bottom walls 17 and 18. The groove 16 does not extend in the side wall 17 of each bearing cup beyond the tapered end portions of the rollers, so that edge contact and high stress concentration is avoided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hookes Universal Joints This invention relates to hookes universal joints, comprising two yokes each having a pair of limbs supporting bearing assemblies which pivotally receive opposed trunnions of a cross shaped connecting member so that universal pivotal movement between the two yokes is possible. Each bearing assembly comprises a bearing cup with a plurality of needle roller bearings disposed between a cylindrical internal wall of the bearing cup and the trunnion, the needle rollers lying parallel to the pivotal axis of the trunnion and an end surface of the trunnion abutting a bottom wall of the bearing cup either directly or with the intermediary of a thrust washer. Such a universal joint will hereafter be referred to as a universal joint of the kind specified.
According to the invention, we provide a hookes universal joint of the kind specified wherein each bearing cup has an annular groove extending around the junction between the side and bottom wall thereof, and each roller has tapered end portions, the axial extent of the groove along the side wall being less than the length of the tapered end portion of each roller.
By this means, high stress concentrations, at the roller end when the joint is transmitting torque, are avoided.
In order that the rollers are properly supported axially by the end wall of the bearing cup, the amount by which the groove encroaches on the bottom wall of the bearing cup is preferably less than half the diameter of the needle roller bearing.
Preferably the trunnion terminates in a chamfered or relieved portion which does not extend axially beyond the tapered end portions of the needle roller bearings.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, which is a section through part of a hookes universal joint embodying the invention.
The illustrated assembly comprises a bearing cup 10, a trunnion 11 which forms part of a cross shaped member 12, and a plurality of needle roller bearings 13 disposed between the trunnion and bearing cup. The bearing cup has an internal cylindrical side wall 14 and a bottom wall 15, an undercut groove 16 extending around the junction between these two walls.
The trunnion 11 has a cylindrical side wall 17, and a planar end wall 18 with a chamfer 19 between these wall. A pyramidal recess 20 is provided in the end of the trunnion, and receives a correspondingly shaped projection from a thrust washer 21 which is interposed between the end wall 18 of the trunnion and the bottom wall 15 of the bearing cup, the pyramidal form of the recess 20 acting to centre the thrust washer on the axis 22 about which relative pivotal movement occurs between the trunnion and bearing cup.
The needle roller bearings 13 are cylindrical in form over the greater part of their length, with tapered (frusto-conical or frusto-ellipsoidal) end portions 23. The ends of the rollers are domed.
It will be noted that the axial extent of the groove 1 6, and of the chamfer 19, is less than the axial extent of the tapered end portions of the needle rollers. By virtue of this, there is not edge contact between the rollers and trunnion and bearing cup, so that high stress concentrations are avoided when the universal joint is transmitting torque and there is a tendency to a degree of misalignment between the trunnion and bearing cup. It will also be noted that the groove 1 6 extends radially inwardly in the bottom wall 1 5 of the bearing cup for a distance less than half the diameter of the needle rollers. This ensures that the rollers are properly supported axially of the assembly.
Lubricant is retained in the assembly by a seal 24 which fits behind a rib 25 at the base of the trunnion. A sealing lip 26 contacts an end surface 27 of the bearing cup to provide the sealing action, and an L-section ring 28 extends close to the outer surface of the bearing cup to provide an additional barrier to protect the seal.

Claims

2. A universal joint according to Claim 1 wherein said groove extends radially inwardly on the bottom wall of the bearing cup by an amount less than half the diameter of the needle roller bearings.
3. A universal joint according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the trunnion of each bearing assembly terminates in a chamfered or relieved portion which does not extend axially beyond the tapered end portions of the needle roller bearings.
