Abstract

Description

SPECIFICATION Cushions This invention relates to cushions, which in addi tion to performing the normal function of the cush ion, also provide an additional function as a means of comfort and pleasure.
It is a trait of certain human beings that they enjoy holding, for example to their chest, a cushion as a means of comfort. This trait is prevelent in some adults and in most children, and the present inven -tion seeks to provide a cushion adapted to this par ticular trait.
Conventionally, cushions are basically envelopes filled with soft resilient material, such as foam or shoddy, and are used on seats and chairs to provide soft support for the head or other part of the body.
Conventionally, especially in relation to domestic cushions, the cushions are of square shape and when filled with the soft filling simulate the appear ance of a sachet.
In the present invention, I depart from this shape, and also finish the cushion in such a manner that it is adapted to the shape of same.
In accordance with the present invention a cushion has printed on one face thereof, the representation of an animal or the like, and the cushion is shaped to the configuration of the animal outline, the cushion also containing a soft filling material.
For example the printed face of the cushion may have a print of a teddy bear, and the edge of the cushion would be of corresponding profile. The holding of such a cushion will provide extra pleasure to persons, adults and children, who are in the habit wrapping their arms around cushions.
The representaion ofthe animal may be printed on the face of the cushion by means of a transfer print ing process, and the cushion envelope may be a flock fabric or a fur fabric so that it is soft to the touch.
The cushion is preferably constructed by conven tional methods, for example taking two profile sec tions of fabric, sewing them together at the edge regions and turning the sewn pieces of fabric inside out to define the cushion envelope. The filling is subsequently inserted inside the cushion envelope which is finally closed by stitching.
The invention also provides a cushion cover for a cushion as aforesaid.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: Fig. 1 is a front view of a cushion according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of the cushion shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cushion shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the cushion shown comprises essentially a fur fabric envelope 12 con taining a soft filling material 14.
The envelope is made of two profiled sections of fabric which are sewn or otherwise secured together, so that, as shown in Fig. 1, the cushion has an edge profile which corresponds to that of a print of an animal, in this case a teddy bear, on one of the pieces of fabric. In fact, the edge of the cushion basically coincides with the edge of the print to give the cushion a realistic appearance as related to a simulated teddy bear.
The cushion can therefore perform two functions, namely that of the normal cushion function, and also that of providing comfort and pleasure to a person who derives pleasure from the holding of a cushion to his or her chest.
The cushion can also be used as a plaything by children.
1. A cushion having printed on one face thereof, the representation of an animal or the like, and the cushion is shaped to the configuration of the animal or the like outline, the cushion also containing a soft filling material.
2. A cushion according to claim 1, wherein the cushion has a print of a teddy bear, and the edge of the cushion is of corresponding profile.
3. A cushion according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the print on the face of the cushion is applied by a transfer printing process.
4. A cushion according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the cushion is constructed by taking two profile sections of fabric, sewing them together at the edge regions, turning the sewn pieces of fabric inside out to define a cushion envelope, inserting the filling inside the cushion envelope and finally closing the envelope by stitching.
5. A cushion substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
6. A cushion envelopeforforming a cushion as claimed in claim 4.
