Abstract
A windscreen wiper is in the form of a roller made of sponge or sponge-like material. The roller may be mounted on a rod or tube that is curved to conform with the curvature of a windscreen. The tube may be perforated and connected to a water supply source or water outlet.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to windscreen wipers
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to windscreen wipers.
Broadly, according to the present invention, there is provided a windscreen wiper that is characterised in that the conventional blade is replaced by a roller made of sponge or sponge-like porous compressible absorbent soft material capable of cleansing the surface of a windscreen and wiping liquid therefrom.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the sponge-like roller is mounted on a spring steel rod ortubethat is curved to conform with the curvature of a windscreen with which the wiper is intended to be used, said tubular rod being perforated to enable water to be introduced or extracted therefrom.
To enable the invention to be clearly understood and readily carried into effect a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying purely diagrammatic drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of the wiper adapted to be connected to an existing drive mechanism.
Figure 2 is a side view indicating how the wiper can be actuated by a purpose made drive.
Figure 3 is a cross section of the roller drawn to a much greater scale.
Figures 4 and 5 are views respectively of the sponge roller and its springy metal tubular core, and
Figure 6 is a view, drawn to a larger scale, illustrating how the rate of rotation of the roller can be adjusted to control the wiping effect.
Referring to said drawings, the windscreen wiper of this invention comprises a roller made of sponge or sponge-like porous compressible absorbent soft material 1 mounted on a spring steel rod or tube 2 that is curved to conform with the curvature of a windscreen 3 with which the wiper is intended to be used.
As shown in Figure 1 the roller-like wiper can be connected to existing drive mechanism 4 and the spring-steel core tube 2 can be perforated, as indicated at 2a in Figure 5, and connected at 5 to a water inlet or outlet.
The sponge roller 1 can be a synthetic sponge-like material and made of synthetic spongy plastics material or rubber.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the spongy roller 1 will readily absorb rain or moisture and wipe it from a windscreen and due to the fact that it will readily make intimate contact with a windscreen will clean the windscreen and rid it of water in a very efficient manner. Also, the introduction of cleansing liquid through the perforated core 2 to the spongy roller 1 itself eliminates the need if desired of providing separate water supply jets.
The sponge roller 1 may be fitted or formed with a hard perforated centre lining or skin so as to be freely rotatable aout the metal core tube or rod 2 as the wiper oscillates to and fro across the surface of a windscreen so as to eliminate unnecessary friction between the spongy roller and the windscreen while at the same time ensuring that sufficient pressure is exerted against the windscreen to effect cleaning and ridding of water therefrom.
If desired the wiper may be fitted with a tensioning screw 6 (see Figure 6) that extends axially through the roller so that by adjusting the screw slightly the head of the screw and a nut at the other end thereof can be caused to exert pressure to a greater or less extent on the ends of the roller at positions A and B and so compress the ends of the roller onto the ends of the rod or tube 2 to cause rotation of the roller to be slowed down or increased according to the direction of turning of the screw and therefore the setting thereof to give additional or less roll wiping effect on the windscreen to suit requirements.
1. A windscreen wiper wherein the conventional blade is replaced by a roller made of sponge or sponge-like porous compressible absorbent soft material capable of making intimate contact with and cleansing the surface of a windscreen and wiping liquid therefrom.
2. A windscreen wiper as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the sponge-like roller is mounted on a spring steel rod or tube that is curved to conform with the curvature of a windscreen with which the wiper is intended to be used, said tubular rod being perforated to enable water to be introduced into or extracted therefrom.
3. A windscreen wiper as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the tubular perforated rod is connected to a water inlet or outlet.
4. A windscreen wiper as claimed in any of the preceding Claims wherein the sponge-like roller is fitted or formed with a hard perforated centre lining or skin so as to be freely rotatable about the metal core tube or rod as the wiper oscillates to and fro across the exterior surface of a windscreen so as to eliminate unnecessary friction between the roller and the windscreen.
5. A windscreen wiper as claimed in any of the preceding Claims, fitted with a tensioning screw that extends axially through the interior of the roller so that by adjusting the screw slightly the head of the screw and a nut at the other end thereof can be caused to exert pressure to a greater or less extent on the ends of the roller and so compress the ends of the roller on to the ends of the rod or tube to cause rotation of the roller to be slowed down or increased.
6. A windscreen wiper constructed and adapted to function substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
7. A windscreen wiper as claimed in any of the preceding Claims having in combination therewith an auxiliary wiper for simultaneously cleaning the interior surface of a windscreen, the auxiliary wiper consisting of a magnetic strip covered with chamois leather or other appropriate cleaning material and
